<ring0_starr> thanks kof, i saw conway's law somewhere else less than a week ago. too many cooks in the kitchen and they each have their own priorities and visions
<ring0_starr> linux ends up being the weighted sum of all these disparate development efforts and it leaves it looking like this bloated ogre mutated by nuclear waste
<ring0_starr> the code is as good as it can practically be given the circumstances
<ring0_starr> but the whole thing doesn't taste good
<kof673> well you are new here, conway's law permeates all IMO :D not just software :D
<ring0_starr> to use an analogy from cooking, it's like how the best dishes happen when each individual ingredient/component can stand upon its own as something you'd eat, but then when you put them all together, it's perfection
<kof673> the other video is because he was a former amiga person IIRC.....fixed hardware would possibly help
<ring0_starr> but linux is like when you try to force together too many components, and some of them don't really fit well with the others, kinda like how you see instagrammable hamburgers with eggs and avocado as toppings
<ring0_starr> so the taste isn't as good even though each component is delish
<kof673> you're preaching to choir :D it is just.... 1) write it yourself 2) convince someone else 3) $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ someone else
<ring0_starr> sometimes i fantasize about making my own computer from the chip level up
<ring0_starr> i mean like i pick an architecture and build the mainboard and periprerials, make the OS, have everything fit nicely
<ring0_starr> kinda like apple if it wasn't... so... apple
<ring0_starr> low tech computer
<ring0_starr> made with cost efficient and replicatable lithography nodes
<ring0_starr> right now tech has way too many interdependencies and it's a house of cards
<ring0_starr> nobody else really seems to have an issue with this
<kof673> that's because this is mostly a "modern" channel :D
<kof673> at some level things or at least consumer gear is disposable. you are getting more speed/etc. and lower power usage perhaps.....but it is supposed to churn perhaps :D
<kof673> what i mean, is beyond software, there are other factors
<ring0_starr> that impacts the culture surrounding it too. if only people knew how much went into that little square pcb
<ring0_starr> and then it impacts the way things are going forward, now things are made with disposability in mind and lacks soul
<ring0_starr> power efficiency is cool in theory but i don't feel is that important, because of the efficiency paradox it essentially evens out and everybody uses the tech they have in more wasteful manners
<ring0_starr> does it really matter if your iphone can last 20 hours on a single charge if you're just using it to watch cat videos
<ring0_starr> also, https://xkcd.com/1579/

<kof673> ring0 this is old but https://queue.acm.org/detail.cfm?id=2349257 the thing is refactoring is not "sexy" the software in the FreeBSD ports collection contains at least 1,342 copied and pasted cryptographic algorithms.
