<KipIngram> So, I'm trying to capture an RTSP cam stream with ffmpeg. Historically I've used mpv to just view the stream, and it has seemed extremely solid. But with ffmpeg it seems rather unreliable - it will capture for a few minutes and then just "give up." I assume it's some minor network glitch that is just minor enough to not actually see in mpv - I might not be looking at just the right time, etc.
<KipIngram> But, mpv hangs in there and continues. Is there a way to configure ffmpeg so it will do that as well?
<KipIngram> I've dug around online, and find lots and lots of options descriptions, but more often than not my ffmpeg (just the package I get with Fedora 41 repos) won't accept them.
<KipIngram> Basically I just want it to reconnect and keep on chugging.
<KipIngram> I could call it in a bash loop, but I'm using -f segment and a loop iteration means a new segment file, and this happens often enough to make that unappealing.
<KipIngram> I can save mpv's output as well, but haven't figured out if there's any way to segment that.

<KipIngram> In ffmpeg's help output, what does the "D" in that column of flag looking things here mean?
<KipIngram> -reconnect <boolean> .D......... auto reconnect after disconnect before EOF (default false)

<cantelope> KipIngram: you're asking what the help file says? I mean, there it is
<KipIngram> Ok. I see, for example, the one I pasted in the help produced by my help feature, but when I put that option on a command line ffmpeg reports it as unrecognized.
<cantelope> Ban trolls

* cantelope nods
<cantelope> Sounds totally like a real goal
<cantelope> What's the goal again, to pick a random command line switch and fail to make it do something, then ask what it does after plucking it from the help file , so no one can direct you to the help file?

<KipIngram> Hey look, I'm sorry - I've just had several of these options I've found discussed online just throw an erroro in my ffmpeg; the ones I saw in fora and stuff might have just been wrong, but this one's right there in the help file. I'm probably doing something simple wrong, but I haven't been able to figure it out yet. I'm not trying to cause grief, but if you want me to go away I will.
<JEEB> you can btw explicitly check with the binary various options
<JEEB> `ffmpeg -h demuxer=rtsp` for example
blb has quit [Ping timeout: 248 seconds]
<JEEB> rtsp is one of those funny things where it's not a protocol but a demuxer since you need to read the text description of the actual streams to open
<KipIngram> Hmmm. My system seems to just give me the same output I get with 'ffmpeg -h' and no option at all when I do that. :-(
MyTDT_ has joined #ffmpeg
<JEEB> how old of a version?
blb has joined #ffmpeg
<KipIngram> "Unknown help option 'demuxer-rtsp."
<KipIngram> Um, looks like 7.1.1.
<JEEB> right, you used a - instead of what I wrote
<JEEB> take a little look at what that character in between is
<KipIngram> It is just a distro's built-in version, so maybe that's the problem - I guess I can try building it from source.
<KipIngram> oh - shoot; one sec.
<KipIngram> Ok, if I copy/paste what you typed, I get feature specific help.
<KipIngram> But if I type it I don't. How weird.
<JEEB> at least what you posted on this chat is a minus instead of an equals sign :P
MyTDT_ has quit [Ping timeout: 244 seconds]
<JEEB> so a simple typo as far as I can see
<KipIngram> Ok, I see now. My eyes aren't as good as they used to be.
<JEEB> but as you can see there is no such option for this module. if you dump `ffmpeg -h full` into a file, you can then scroll towards which module is that reconnect option defined for
<JEEB> anyways, for RTSP I think the biggest difference for RTSP is that mpv uses TCP by default (the option `rtsp_transport`) while FFmpeg itself defaults to UDP, I think.
<KipIngram> Ok. I am likely just not getting the syntax quite right. But I will go whale on it for a while; I truly didn't mean to bug anyone. It's actually the first time in my life I've been called a troll. :-(
<JEEB> don't worry about it, I'm not sure what in your question regarding what the D meant triggered that random user :P
<cantelope> Still waiting to hear what the actual goal was. Oh! There wasn't one
<JEEB> the option got mentioned on #mpv as one that was set for something
<cantelope> Indeed, like when I join a channel, this dude shows up
<JEEB> thus this person tried to set it and of course as it didn't work wanted to figure out more about it :P
<cantelope> Wish I was kidding

<SnakesAndStuff> If I'm going to concat a few segments together, but I want to trim downa segment and slow it down, I'm getting unexpected results
<SnakesAndStuff> Not saying the program is producing bad results, I'm saying my understanding is off.
<SnakesAndStuff> if I use the trim filter, then the setpts filter (setpts=4*(STARTPTS-PTS) for example for 4x slow down) the video length is longer than the number of resulting video frames it seems.
<SnakesAndStuff> So I'm manually calculating it and doing another trim.... Surely I'm doing things way too complicated with too many filters.
<SnakesAndStuff> So for trimming, AND slowing down a segment, what is the proper order of filters?
