<Kadigan> BtbN: yeah, that's what I was asking for. I didn't intend ffmpeg to be the HTTP server, I was wondering if there was a good solution for it to deliver the media TO a server, so I could take it from there.
<Kadigan> I'm just wondering if it'll produce the output files ad infinitum? Is there a way to skip writing files and just have it output on-demand when the webserver asks? Or should I just make a RAM disk and write there, while deleting files that are older than say 10 seconds or a minute, or something?

<cers> I am trying to produce a hls file, but am running into issues with playback. Here is my example command (filter_complex is not needed in the example, but is in a more complicated version, so I left it in for completenes)
<cers> ffmpeg -i BigBunny.mp4 -c:a aac -ac 2 -c:v libx264 -preset slow -filter_complex "[0:v]split='2'[vf0][vf1];[vf0]scale='w=960:h=720',setsar='1:1'[v720];[vf1]scale='w=640:h=480',setsar='1:1'[v480]" -hls_flags single_file -hls_playlist_type vod -hls_segment_type fmp4 -f hls -map "[v720]" -b:v:0 3000k -map "[v480]" -b:v:1 1500k -map "0:a" -b:a:2 128k -var_stream_map "v:0,agroup:audio,name:v720 v:1,agroup:audio,name:v480 a:0,agroup:audio,name:a128k" -hls_list_size 0
<cers> -hls_segment_filename bunny/%v.mp4 -master_pl_name bunny.m3u8 bunny/%v.m3u8
<cers> this plays fine in ffplay (though I cannot seek in the file), but VLC only very briefly plays audio, only until it switches to a video track, then it only plays video

<grib> Kadigan: ffmpeg's hls muxer has some options to delete older/unreferenced segments. check the manual for info about -hls_flags delete_segments
rsx has joined #ffmpeg
<grib> cers: VLC's logs would probably tell you which segments it's trying to fetch, and perhaps give some clues to why it stops.
<cers> grib: I have not been able to make VLC actually procude a log file. I configured it under Advanced -> Advanced Settings -> Logger, log to file, verbosity debug, but the file is just empty
<cers> s/procude/procude
<grib> can you run vlc from a terminal? with "--verbose" perhaps?
<grib> there's also --file-logging --log-file my_vlc_log_file.txt

<cers> grib: I found a messages window in vlc that contains debug info, perhaps that will do? https://pastebin.pl/view/301dab09
<grib> yeah, that debug info has some hints in it
<grib> mp4 debug: unrecognized major media specification (iso5).
<grib> mp4 info: Fragment sequence discontinuity detected 1 != 0
<grib> main warning: picture is too late to be displayed (missing 907 ms)
<grib> i've got to head off now, but someone else might be able to help.

<ppw> hi
<ppw> what's better: 8-bit 4:4:4 or 10-bit 4:2:0?
<linkmauve> ppw, it depends on whether you’re more likely to see banding artifacts or blocky colour change artifacts in your video.
<linkmauve> Try both on a representative sample of your video and check which one looks better, at the sample rate you chose.
<ppw> i see "blocks" in dark areas where before the transcoding there were none
<linkmauve> Sounds like banding, try 10-bit then?
<ppw> ok I will

<ppw> looks like i spoke prematurely--the original video has the worst blocking artifacts, but it was so dark i didn't see it until i switched the display to high contrast mode
<ppw> this is a bit of a kerfluffle
<kepstin> ppw: note that ffmpeg does have some options for debanding in video filters (probably look at the libplacebo deband filter?), and encoding to 10bit will help to preserve the result from after filtering.

<KipIngram> Is it possible to feed ffmpeg a video and have it extract sections around motion detection events?
obcecado has joined #ffmpeg
<BtbN> Maybe mpdecimate, but it's not something it's designed for
<KipIngram> We've got a camera on our patio aimed at a nest on the side of the house barn swallows built last year. They're beginning to show up again, and I just saw one light on the nest for a minute. This year I'd like to try to record some footage instead of just watching them. I did figure out how to add an option to my mpv viewing scripts to record the stream, but some way to archive only the
<KipIngram> "interesting parts" that was "semi-automatable" would be awfully nice.
