<SiFuh_>
ukky: Did you see that one that zorz just posted?
<zorz>
hahahaha

<ukky>
SiFuh_: Yeah. Nobody takes him seriously for long time already, especially in Canada.
<SiFuh_>
zorz: Did you read what ukky just replied?
<SiFuh_>
Hahaha

No, SiFuh_ is english-to-english translator

Lets say native-tonative then (about telegraph)

Hello! Do you guys have jobs? Are you graded "junior" or "middle"?
<SiFuh_>
zorz: dai an arai ti ukky put dai bo?
<SiFuh_>
uwumeowmeownyaa: My job is to drink all the beer ever made. It is a good job because they and I keep making more.
<ukky>
uwumeowmeownyaa: I have a job. Currently am on vacation.
<uwumeowmeownyaa>
This is very good. Do you use the skills acquired at work to contributo to the so-called "CRUX" (a GNU/Linux distribution)?
<uwumeowmeownyaa>
contribute*
<SiFuh_>
I don't contribute to GNU/Linux at all. Any distro with GNU in front of Linux deserves a painful death.
<ukky>
uwumeowmeownyaa: For me, partially. Just my C/C++/shell skills. But I did just a few unofficial patches for Crux.
<SiFuh_>
I use to teach Computer Science and Electrical Engineering in South East Asia. The distro we mostly used was CRUX back before and during version 1.0
<SiFuh_>
If anyone in my class wrote shell scripts like zorz, they'd have been failed.
<uwumeowmeownyaa>
I will learn something cool at my workplace then so that I can bring the era of GNU closer, contributing to the "CRUX" operating system too.
<SiFuh_>
I actually made a Thai version of CRUX for the Engineering department that used Matlab and I had Matlab full ready to go so when they installed CRUX they could install Matlab as well. Made that teacher's job a little easier. She'd call me in to teach them how to install CRUX on the first day. After that, she'd teach them about using Matlab
<ukky>
uwumeowmeownyaa: Are you a developer? or you just plan on learning some development tool/language?
<SiFuh_>
ukky: He will replace beerman soon and we all can have a party
<ukky>
SiFuh_: beerman is young and has no plans to retire anytime soon. Unless uwumeowmeownyaa will use force to replace him.
<SiFuh_>
ukky: He lives in Germany. So he ain't got long left to be online. :-P

<ukky>
uwumeowmeownyaa: okay
<ukky>
SiFuh_: tiger? snake? Those cannot read 'Wet paint' sign
<SiFuh_>
ukky: The sign says "Don't touch or I will break your fingers"
<zorz>
noooooooooooooooooooo
<zorz>

<ukky>
SiFuh_: must be snake then.

No, I will sit in the shadows with my Katana

They have zero reason to come over to my home.
<ukky>
Did you point CTV camera toward your car, to catch the offender?
<SiFuh_>
Yes, and I know who
<zorz>
poor Elon, left his home... tomorrow maybe he does not have one hahahahhaa
<zorz>
for example i burn subtitles with ffmpeg simultanesly on 14 cores of my 16 core cpu. parallel
<zorz>
meaning 14 jobs, 14 movies.
<SiFuh_>
zorz: What the fsck does that have to do with what remiliascarlet is saying?
<remiliascarlet>
GNU does have some relevance in compilers, debuggers, and text editors. Everyone seems to be using either GCC + GDB, or LLVM + LLDB. And everyone who's not a soydev uses either Emacs or Vim/Neovim.
<zorz>
yes
<remiliascarlet>
Oh, me saying "GCC", "GDB", and "Emacs" without slapping "GNU" in front of each piece of software is probably going to piss off uwumeowmeownyaa.
<SiFuh_>
remiliascarlet: No, he wanted to show off that he learned how to use parallel
<SiFuh_>
remiliascarlet: Wonder if zorz actually knows what that is
<remiliascarlet>
He probably thinks it's a Python script.
<SiFuh_>
ukky: zorz: remiliascarlet: "I am getting to that age where I need glasses for reading. So I had to make the hard decision... to stop reading" - Ty Barnett
<ukky>
That involves leaving all IRC channels. Or, continue channel logging until his vision gets corrected.
<SiFuh_>
ukky: I don't think that comedian uses IRC
<ukky>
Would be funny if he mentions SiFuh_ in his next gig
<SiFuh_>
But I don't need glasses
<SiFuh_>
ukky: When I was a kid I use to say "There are only two reasons you'd need to wear glasses. You're either inbred or your eyes suck at seeing"
<farkuhar>
SiFuh_: If the Thai uni's Engineering department was willing to train its students on CRUX rather than a proprietary OS, why not also swap out the proprietary Matlab for its free-software counterpart?
<SiFuh_>
farkuhar: Don't know, didn't care. They do their thing and I do mine. That is the way it usually goes. Don't even try to think about why they would do something that way, you'd be wasting your time.
<SiFuh_>
farkuhar: I wonder how many rc versions are going to be released for 3.8 before 3.8 is actually released
<farkuhar>
Some folks in #kisslinux are hitting build errors with webkitgtk: https://0x0.st/8inz.txt Unless the error messages are misleading again, it looks like a bug that some JavaScript web-macaque introduced.
<SiFuh_>
What comes next from kisslinux? foreplaylinux?
<farkuhar>
The webkitgtk errors are cautioning me against trying to switch the inkscape dependency chain away from gtkmm3 (in favor of gtkmm4). Maybe uwumeowmeownyaa had the right idea to say that GTK was a mistake.
<farkuhar>
GTK = GIMP Toolkit, GIMP = GNU Image Manipulation Program, GNU = GNU's Not Unix. Keep trying to unpack the acronyms and you get an infinite loop; therefore, GTK was a mistake.
<zorz>
good thing i need to buy some GNU condoms!
<ukky>
I would be happy if only Athena or Motif were available.
<zorz>
ukky: :P
<ukky>
And it would be nice to remove D-Bus and ATK too.
<zorz>
D-Bus is covid
<ukky>
It is easy to get rid of D-Bus. But removal of ATK is very hard. It seems ATK was designed in a way that makes sure nobody could remove it. I did it once and the patch set was enormous.
<zorz>
Assistive Technology ATK bridge
<ukky>
zorz: ATK is Accessibility Toolkit. ATK bridge is part of ATK
<ukky>
GTK heavily depends on ATK. Basically, you cannot compile GTK with ATK disabled.
<zorz>
ukky: I heard you becoming American, soon you will have an American Passport:P
<SiFuh_>
zorz: I heard Alaska and Minnesota will become Canadian soon.
<zorz>
heh
<zorz>
Trump,,, bordelle world
<zorz>
SiFuh_: Greenland and Canada will be ONE!
<SiFuh_>
If I was a Canadian being told Canada is now joining the US, I'd be cheering and go out and get me some guns ;-)
<SiFuh_>
If they said Canada is part of US but will not adopt the gun laws of the US, then fuck that. I won't want it to join.
<ukky>
zorz: Anything is possible for the next 4 years.
<farkuhar>
Hmm, `httpup sync https://gitlab.com/SiFuh/yenjie/-/raw/master/#vlc vlc` has exit status 0 ("Finished successfully") even though each individual file checkout complains "The requested URL returned error: 404".
<farkuhar>
httpup does create the desired directory and populate it with the correct filenames, but all the files are zero-length.
<SiFuh_>
There is no VLC there
zorz has quit [Quit: Lost terminal]
<farkuhar>
I think httpup is losing information about the failure of individual downloads, if the process as a whole still has exit status 0.
<SiFuh_>
VLC was moved 3 months ago to unmaintained.
<farkuhar>
Hmm, does the unofficial portdb get refreshed less frequently than every three months?
<SiFuh_>
I choose git over httpup
<farkuhar>
Too bad the unofficial portdb doesn't prioritize git when publishing a repo that supports both.
<farkuhar>
Anyway, does httpup need more maintenance in order to retain the exit status of individual file checkout attempts? It's misleading to conclude the operation with "Finished successfully" if all the files downloaded are zero-length.
<SiFuh_>
farkuhar: No idea
<SiFuh_>
But I do know that his portsdb sometimes fails
<farkuhar>
The reason I wanted to try VLC again is that `mpv dvd://` will sometimes start the playback of a TV series at the third episode, rather than playing the episodes in the intended order. I don't know what algorithm mpv is using to decide which title gets played first. But at least VLC opens a DVD at the root menu, where you can select episodes from a properly-ordered screen.
<SiFuh_>
Let me try... mpv dvd:// --dvd-device=The\ Silencer\ \(1999\).iso
<SiFuh_>
That's the only DVD image I have and it works
<SiFuh_>
If I run mpv *iso then I get the menu screen. The movie plays but the time is off.
<SiFuh_>
So I can't replicate what you are trying :-(
<farkuhar>
Well, the default mpv algorithm works on most discs, but there are some badly-authored discs that throw it into confusion. Hence my attempt to try VLC on this particular disc.
<SiFuh_>
I don't think I watched the final episode of that.
<farkuhar>
Anyway, if uwumeowmeownyaa is looking for a project to help out with, the misleading exit status of httpup is a good place to start.
<SiFuh_>
If I remember correctly it was so painful to watch that I forced myself to watch it and when I finally got the final seasons I closed it sometime through the second last episode and just erased it from existance. So I cared not to even stick it for another episode to see the end. Hahaha
<SiFuh_>
farkuhar: Could the disk have errors? If you dd the iso to a file would that work the same?
<farkuhar>
SiFuh_: Yes, it could be a problem with the physical medium. I'd rather play around with VLC than dedicate hard drive space to a file "so painful to watch" that I'll eventually erase it from existence.
<SiFuh_>
jaeger fixed the issue with my repo.
<farkuhar>
jaeger *identified* the issue with your repo. The fix had to be done on your end.
<SiFuh_>
Yes
<SiFuh_>
farkuhar: When I moved vlc 3 months ago, I must have run git manually instead of using the script.
<SiFuh_>
No he actually fixed it. He just deligated me to do the job ;-)
<SiFuh_>
Delegated*
<farkuhar>
Does jaeger have shell access to your CRUX machine? I think he still does on mine, if he hasn't misplaced his SSH keys.
<SiFuh_>
Hell no, he installed linux-pam in core. No chance he will get shell access here.
<farkuhar>
You don't have to put him in the wheel group or otherwise give him root privileges. It's just convenient that he has a user account, e.g. for direct transfer of small files like the contrib signing key.
<SiFuh_>
farkuhar: Find me Episode S14E01 of Moonshiners "Backlash From the Backwoods"
<farkuhar>
I wonder if zorz would resort to dd when ripping an optical disc to an iso file. It sounds like ffmpeg is his tool of choice.
<SiFuh_>
I didn't want to rip it. I wanted to clone it
<farkuhar>
Why am I getting errors with `man ffmpeg`? Even `zless /usr/share/man/man1/ffmpeg.1.gz` complains about "Input preprocessor failed (status 141)". Could it have something to do with what Nomius said about needing to rebuild ffmpeg after the glslang update?
<farkuhar>
Oh, and I still haven't updated gettext on my CRUX-musl machine. It builds successfully, but there's a footprint mismatch (MISSING usr/lib/preloadable_libintl.so). Maybe gettext is another port we'll need to put into the CRUX-musl overlay.
