<phoebos> midfavila: you need _POSIX_C_SOURCE >= 2 || _XOPEN_SOURCE
<midfavila> yeah i found out from the manpages
<midfavila> it's just annoying that it's not posix by default

<Ellowee[m]> Stop buying into proprietary and smack the nearest cattle into submission to do the same
<drez> » [18:59:57] <shokara> what's wrong with ffplay? | well ffmpeg is kind of big
<drez> I wonder what's the most KISS way to play back PCM audio, on Linux at least
<drez> mpg123 might be cool for mpeg audio
<drez> I wonder if SoX is better than FFmpeg
<drez> piping into aplay might be an option as well
<drez> Although, for extreme minimalism projects, I hear OSS is better
chomwitt has joined #kisslinux
<sewn> <drez> "I wonder what's the most KISS..." <- tinyalsa probably
<sewn> also ffmpeg is fucking everywhere why would you want to replace it
<sewn> I don't see it has any problems
<drez> audio is complex
<drez> I would like a JACK-centric A/V system

<midfavila> sewn: maybe because ffmpeg has support for literally hundreds of formats, most of which are completely irrelevant if all you want is to play some music
<midfavila> as a result of that it has a huge list of dependencies
<sewn> you can disable them
<midfavila> that only has a marginal impact on the dependency tree, and it's *still* a massive project in and of itself
<midfavila> far more than what one would need to simply play back an mp3 or an ogg
<sewn> how would one play a normal 320kbps mp3 or flac on linux without ffmpeg in 2023
<midfavila> probably mpg123 or 321 in the case of the former
<midfavila> in the case of the latter, don't know, don't care. use a real audio format.
<midfavila> sick and tired of acting like listening from FLACs is a reasonable thing.
<sewn> i dont target flac
<sewn> all of the music i get is always in flac
<sewn> soooooooooo
<sewn> damn it actually plays my music woa
<sewn> ok then how would i play videos without ffmpeg
<midfavila> you could use xine.
<sewn> ok damn xine is better than mpg123
<sewn> you got me mid
<midfavila> :smug:
<midfavila> :OOOO
<midfavila> it's finally a reasonable temperature again. can go out with just a vest
<dotkwa[m]> what's wrong with flac
<dotkwa[m]> too fat for you?
<midfavila> unnecessary for day to day listening
<midfavila> i *love* how my government's response to ongoing housing shortages and ridiculous rent prices is to give low-income individuals 500$... *once*. and nothing else.

<rohan> anyone here have a hyprland build for wayland only? without xwayland
<Torr> midfavila: Very sluguish today zzzZZZ
<rohan> also anyone have a source for bri?
<midfavila> i feel that torr. nap?
<Torr> midfavila: I tried a little, but had 0 success.
<midfavila> unlucky
<midfavila> sorry to hear
<Torr> I'll sleep later.
<Torr> Will have a look at this soon: https://github.com/rnpgp/rnp
<Torr> It's a Netpgp successor.
<midfavila> neat
<midfavila> i really need to get back into programming... haven't done any for weeks
<midfavila> aside from like, adding a preproc directive to apport

<midfavila> as in ISA? at some point Soon:tm: that would be nice
<midfavila> i'm nowheres near anything like that right now though
<Torr> Well, that's a big project. I would have no idea where to start ;P
<Torr> Maaaan, inflation is through the roof these days.
<midfavila> you're telling me
<midfavila> i'm going to need to apply for government assistance soon to help pay rent. with the cost of food and everything it's barely affordable
<Torr> Yeah, was doing a few calculations on groceries, some items are up by 34% in a year.
<Ellowee[m]> Would be nice if people did a little whacky hack and decided to do single-room apartments just to have addresses and ditch housing costs
<Ellowee[m]> Silly stuff I know

<Torr> Be back soon
<Torr> back
<midfavila> that was quick
<Torr> ;)
<Torr> Ellowee[m]: housing costs will certainly take a hit once the next real state bubble pops.

<midfavila> would you guys say that something like kilo is a reasonable alternative to GNU Nano?
<midfavila> haven't used kilo much but it seems fairly straightforward and easy to use
<midfavila> yes
<Torr> One... file...
<Torr> Wow
<Torr> midfavila: 1st time seeing it.
<midfavila> somewhat surprising, it's oft discussed here
<midfavila> but yeah it's a neat little program
<midfavila> i think there's a small book that walks you through writing it, too
<Torr> The code looks clean.
<Torr> midfavila: Books like those are comfy.
