<[TheBug]>
well I am half wondering if I was lied to, I bought the adapters cause they claim to be 8156b
<[TheBug]>
but I am wondering if I got duped and they are just 8156
<[TheBug]>
which are known to have some odd issue
<[TheBug]>
I searched arround specific to get 8156b but who knows
<[TheBug]>
anyhow I am gonna test more a bit later as well as tomorrow when my switch arrived
<[TheBug]>
arrives*
<[TheBug]>
to see if it has something to do with them not wanting to link to one another directly for some reason
<[TheBug]>
I didn't try a cross over cable but also from what I read it says you don't have to have one and they should auto negotiate
<[TheBug]>
but that coul mayube effect it somehow as well
<[TheBug]>
most confusing part is if you check with ethtool
<[TheBug]>
while it shows support for 2500baesT
<[TheBug]>
it then shows
<[TheBug]>
Link partner advertised link modes: 10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full
<[TheBug]>
100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full
<[TheBug]>
1000baseT/Full
<[TheBug]>
as in the partner isn't advertising the correct link mode
<[TheBug]>
you can look down further and find
<[TheBug]>
Speed: 2500Mb/s
<[TheBug]>
Port: MII
<[TheBug]>
Duplex: Full
<[TheBug]>
PHYAD: 32
<[TheBug]>
but if you use mii-tool
<[TheBug]>
it will say the link is only 1000baseT/Full
<[TheBug]>
and not 2500baseT/Full
<[TheBug]>
I have tried force advertising the link speed
<[TheBug]>
then it attempts to figure it out, and then fails back
<[TheBug]>
so could very much so be driver related or something as well
<[TheBug]>
noting that it will link to my 1Gbit switch and work at 1Gbit without issues
<[TheBug]>
hmm I wonder if my cat5e cable isn't good enough quality
<[TheBug]>
seems to only break with 2.5Gbit and linked direct to one another
<lanefu>
yeah dude.. def try moar cables

c0rnelius: It was kernel / driver version on one of my boards, I hadn't updated it and it was still running 5.8 which I guess kernel / driver has issues there, updated both boards to 5.10.12 and now:

RoyK: no need to be a hater -- I won't get upset at you if you want to paste a little in here for help your self
<[TheBug]>
sometimes it is much more time efficient and I did try not to be abusive

[TheBug]: Happy to see you got it working.
<[TheBug]>
c0rnelius: yeah was very weird, I guess the driver was really broken for a while and has only recently been patched to work correctly, seems the issue was the driver in 5.8 was so borken while the device was working on the other fine, it was so bad it was breaking the auto-negotiation
<[TheBug]>
at least as of 5.10 it looks to be fixed

I like 5.10 LTS :) It actually mostly works, most of the time.
<[TheBug]>
Also for anyone interested - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08GY17WLJ these are REAL 8156b chipset adapters (I opened it and confirmed on the chip as well) and they are hard to find from a US seller, so maybe this will help someone else out whom is interested.
<[TheBug]>
hahahaha
<[TheBug]>
and the price went down after I bought t hem
<[TheBug]>
figures
<[TheBug]>
I paid 26.90 per and now its down to 24.90
<[TheBug]>
the bastards!
<c0rnelius>
I love how they still list Windows XP as an option.

<[TheBug]>
(in case you are not aware there are known issues with 2.5Gbit on the 8156 (non-b) versions which usually sell for cheaper)
<[TheBug]>
supposedly they overheat

<qqqhhh>
the bottom response has "modprobe gc2035" which does not work because the module is missing

hmm thats an odd #
<Tenkawa>
let me look that up
<Xogium>
I suspect this is the mangled armbian from xunling
<Xogium>
er
<Xogium>
xunlong rather
<Tenkawa>
yeah
<Xogium>
given this was on the orange pi forum itself
<Tenkawa>
its a valid version

<Tenkawa>
i just verified
<[TheBug]>
If you note in that thread it states there is no support after 3.x for that module and that thread specifically states they are using it with an OLD legacy image
<Tenkawa>
it is extremely old
<[TheBug]>
yeah
<[TheBug]>
I don't even know if it is in archive
<Xogium>
probably one of these things that once again work only with the beyond legacy kernel of sunxi
<Tenkawa>
from what I'm reading I doubt it highly
<[TheBug]>
IgorPec: do you still store some of the older images somewhere? (older than what is in the archive?)
<Tenkawa>
[TheBug]: whats worse is reading the code segments I have been reading it never made it past armhf
silver_hook has joined #armbian
<[TheBug]>
yeah its probably ancient
<Tenkawa>
so armel/armhf at best... arm64 forget it
<Tenkawa>
heh
<qqqhhh>
if it works only with an old image then i consider it a lost cause, thanks anyway.
<Tenkawa>
qqqhhh: wish I had better news
<[TheBug]>
well I am sure you can make it work if you have the skills, but the answer is there is probably no 'easy way' without using the older image
<qqqhhh>
Tenkawa: no problem i will find another solution, fortunately the camera did not cost much
<Tenkawa>
[TheBug]: porting and builds "are" my world but even I cringe at some things
