jobhdez: It might help if you are GC bound at the moment. Run some code under TIME and it will tell you how much time is spent in GC.

hello hayley -- thanks a lot for your great work. im currently reading your paper. thanks a lot

The paper was written before I implemented compaction, so your results may vary. In particular less time is spent scavenging and sweeping, and core files are smaller than before (but still larger than with gencgc).

Anybody ever heard of a "LISP dialect called ZOE", apparently in use at a Swiss pharmaceutical company? A recruiter asked me to apply for a job, and for the life of me, I can't find anything about a "ZOE". I am assuming that is some sort of application/DSL built on CL in use at this company, but thought I would cast my net here as well for a possible trawl.

you can also try #lisp and maybe even #scheme
<easye>
Yeah, I guess it could be a Scheme dialect.

hayley: Have you performed any before and after tests for the new GC?
<hayley>
My paper tests five GC-intensive programs.
<hayley>
Although the results were before I implemented compaction. In my experience the compaction never makes matters worse in terms of time, but reduces the number of pages SBCL claims from the OS.
<hayley>
Perhaps I could do benchmarks on my new old mini PC, which so far has survived running a stress test of my GC for over three weeks. I would appreciate knowing about micro-architectural differences in any case.

hayley: Can you explain how this interacts with my more-sane-but-not-standard linux vm.overcommit_memory=2 ?
<hayley>
Hopefully nothing different. It uncommits as usual for SBCL.
kevingal has joined #commonlisp
<mfiano>
Ok. behavior of 2 depends on the ratio also set.
<mfiano>
Which I keep at about 40% unless I am doing some crazy memory intensive thing.
<hayley>
My collector might uncommit fewer pages, due to fragmentation (though it can usually reuse the memory just fine). And even with Linux defaults SBCL uses more memory, when counting reserved pages.
<hayley>
What I heard is that measuring memory use is hard.
<mfiano>
I guess my main question is, does SBCL commit max heap size at init time?

<hayley>
Good question. From memory the heap gets mmap'ed and then the core file gets mmap'ed over the heap.
