<Armbian-Discord> <kprasadvnsi> Is it possible to use custom rootfs in a Armbian build?

<Armbian-Discord> <Xen> Why not just mount the image and replace the rootfs from there?
<archetech> and to what benefit is a custom one
<c0rnelius> Why not just take the time out of ur day to learn how to make ur own image?
<c0rnelius> You'll lose the benefits of having some one else do the work for you. but beyond that you'll have full control.

<Armbian-Discord> <kprasadvnsi> Not sure what you mean by "some one else do the work for you" . I am not asking anybody to make a custom image for me.

<Armbian-Discord> <kprasadvnsi> I am simply asking for the information, someone in this group might already know. Sure I can find out the hard way. But that's where communities help. You just ask around and if nobody knows then you take time to find the solution yourself.

<c0rnelius> Yeah but what ur asking is so vague that it borderlines on... `question mark` Each SoC for the most part needs an offset because of uboot, then there is kernel comps and patches... So nothing is really straight forward. Rootfs for what OS? CRUX, Arch, Void, etc... Its all doable, but you would still need to know how to accomplish the basics.
archetech has joined #armbian
<Armbian-Discord> <Xen> The easiest way: You fdisk a pre-made image. Then loop mount the root fs. Then just replace it.
<c0rnelius> Dirtiest way. yes.
<Armbian-Discord> <Xen> Stop being silly. People live in reality. Do you rewrite/rebuild the Linux kernel for each change you need?
<archetech> the only way to get full control is a source build.
<Armbian-Discord> <Xen> Sometimes you just gotta be practical.
<archetech> Sysinfo for 'blfs-r5': Running inside KDE Plasma 5.22.90 on Linux From Scratch r10.1-182-systemd powered by Linux 5.13.13, CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 1600 Six-Core Processor at 2871-3200/3200 MHz, RAM: 999/15946 MB, Storage: 11/63 GB, 239 procs, 0.08h up
<c0rnelius> Yes. I build my kernel specific to my boards.
<archetech> I build my rootfs specific to my boards
<c0rnelius> As do I everything\ else.
<c0rnelius> only makes sense
<Armbian-Discord> <Xen> Notice I said rewrite/rebuild.
<Armbian-Discord> <Xen> Don't use patches. The best control is digging in the code yourself.
<Armbian-Discord> <Xen> There's always a limit to control/time/effort. Being practical isn't being dirty.
<c0rnelius> Patches are just to automate code changes in the kernel and uboot source.
<Armbian-Discord> <Xen> Yeah, but why use patches when you can alter the kernel source yourself? You learn so much more and get infinite control!
<c0rnelius> Because thats what patches are for?
<Armbian-Discord> <Xen> But it's dirty!
<Armbian-Discord> <Xen> Because you're not doing it yourself!
<Armbian-Discord> <Xen> 😛
<archetech> best kernel is apatched odroid kernel these days for amlogic
<c0rnelius> I do it once depending on the branch and only alter it when it breaks.
<archetech> idk bought other boards
<c0rnelius> tobetter is the man.
<archetech> yup
<archetech> what I like is he's friendly and very responsive to requests and help plus he knows his stuff
<c0rnelius> And responsive. I have to give it to him. One of the better fellas I've encountered.
<c0rnelius> :)
<c0rnelius> Although I don't think he is alone in this and have seen some the commits. But whatever team he has is spot on.
<c0rnelius> If you look at the original commit, its done by someone else. He just adjusted for the revert from what I can tell.
<Armbian-Discord> <Xen> The way the Linux kernel is developed is terribad. There's so many forks. I can't imagine how many man years people spend just trying to put patches back into mainline.
<c0rnelius> I agree with that. But Linus isn't concerned `i think` about all aspects of how this all fits together. One little changed that looks good on its face, doesn't mean its good everywhere.
<c0rnelius> Sometimes reverts are just needed in arm, as it wasn't taken under consideration what would happen if said change was made.
<c0rnelius> Look at RK3399 and eth. Its completely fucked right now unless you revert the pm code.
<c0rnelius> Same thing happened with Amlogic... One little piece of code completely prevented some of those board to be able to reboot. Same goes for Uboot. If you don't prevent uboot from mapping the memory and tell the kernel don't set it, the S922X will halt or reboot with watchdog installed. Its a big mess everywhere.
<c0rnelius> There is not enough... people meeting in the middle I thinks?
<c0rnelius> I could be wrong. I usually am.
