<stipa>
if you want to game it's best to get an win machine, there's no argue about that
<stipa>
new amd's with gpu inside are good
<stipa>
that should be cheap
<stipa>
saw some YT videos and new games run fine on those
<stipa>
it's playable
<stipa>
apu uses ddr5 so it's pretty fast
<stipa>
you could save 200$ by not needing decent GPU
<stipa>
the downside is there cant be much cores since gpu takes some space on the apu die
<stipa>
but for gaming and stuff, it's fine
<mangix>
stipa: Steam Deck runs arch
<stipa>
so what's that thing?
<stipa>
a pc?
<stipa>
a yeah
<stipa>
amd
<stipa>
yeah, those new amd apus are something
<stipa>
worth attention
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> ohh but with a decent gpu, and mostly features on the driver, i could do a lot more
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> but this gpu, from linux.. sucks deeply
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> some games run even better under emulation on rk3399
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> with a decent igpu like the amd ones, that have way better drivers. I could use linux all day
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> bc dxvk in a real thing there
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> this soc is so slow that any of my arm sbcs can beat it on tons of cpu workloads
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> but its x86, so, lots of software and decent gpu
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> we are far away in terms of gpu against low end intel gpus
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> this intel cherry trail 400, a potato have mostly the same power than rk3399, a bit less tho
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> but even apt works like a 90s pcs on that soc
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> processing packages take veryyy long time
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> but yeah, even on linux, the browsing experience is okay
<stipa>
kewl
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> on windows it humiliate us. thats sad but browsing on arm linux is far away to be decent
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> not only the vpu
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> also, browser in general doesnt like linux arm at all
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> the first rk3399 devices appear in 2018 IIRC,
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> half 2021, no VPU in the main linuxs desktops
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> the same on rpi4 tho
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> with tons of more money
<stipa>
yeh, but browsers overall don't support video accel
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> h264 is broken on 64 bit
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> h265 doesnt work on x11
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> yeah, on linux, but lately they are some progress there
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> even then
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> we dont have vpu on rk3399 desktop, we cant start even thinking on vpu inside it
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> inside the browser I mean
<stipa>
yeh, there's some accel for video on H6
<stipa>
not in browsers of course
<[TheBug]>
NeonFetch
<[TheBug]>
NeonFetch: make sure you have also enabled the higher power states in bios if you really want performance out if it
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> you mean for z8350
<[TheBug]>
if your in windows you should be able to run hwinfo and see it actually bursting to full speed on all cores if the highest power state is in use
<[TheBug]>
yeah
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> first I need it stable haha
<[TheBug]>
what isn't stable about it?
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> I tho this soc only do boost on one core
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> I have blue screens
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> I already mention this
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> nicod also
<[TheBug]>
doing what?
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> nothing
<[TheBug]>
cause I have used it for a lot of emulation and not seen any blue screens
<[TheBug]>
I am tempted to say you have poor cooling
<[TheBug]>
that chip gets VERY hott
<[TheBug]>
even with raxdas included passive heat sink
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> check the post of the guy that also have them
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> and its not temps
<[TheBug]>
I have a 5v 20mmx20mm fan attached to the bottom for extra cooling
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> its runniv very cool
<[TheBug]>
what are you doing to cause the blue screen?
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> its just that whenever I have gpu acceleration it goes down
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> having gpu accel
<[TheBug]>
I mean I have done it on tablets in different cases but not on the Rock PiX or AtomicPI with correct cooling and power
<[TheBug]>
what power source are you using?
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> 9v
<[TheBug]>
are you using one that supports higher power states?
<[TheBug]>
if you use an correct QC 3.0 adapter it should be able to hit 12v
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> everyone have this issue as far as i am concerned
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> sorry
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> 12v
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> I use a radxa psu
<[TheBug]>
hmm well I am "everyone" and I don't have your issue so I am suspect
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> with nothing connected
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> disable gpu boost
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> everything
<[TheBug]>
what model board (revision) do you have
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> well, but you use 32 bit afaik
<[TheBug]>
is your emmc soldered to the board
<[TheBug]>
or do you have one with emmc module
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> i used the official image, the lastest one
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> blue screen
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> the guy ogf this review also
<[TheBug]>
I have had both and they are different revisions
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> nicod, also
<[TheBug]>
which model of the board you have?
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> tons of people with blue screen
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> 1.4
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> the guy on that review
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> said he had an odd workaround, not really a workaround
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> but after booting linux (shared on the same emmc)
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> and going back to windows it resolved the instabilitiues
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> but after reboot it appears again, only booting to linux and then to windows reoslve the issue after next reboot to windows
<[TheBug]>
ohh I have seen teh GPU driver fail in a complete different way but not this one mentioend in that reference in windows
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> thats what he said
<[TheBug]>
my failure has been under Linux (Android)
<[TheBug]>
but it happens when changing power states
<[TheBug]>
so another thing I would suggest when you test
<[TheBug]>
if figure out how to make sure windows stays in a full power state instead of changing states
<[TheBug]>
there is some weird power state garbage with this chip and it doesn't like changing states very much
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> so, performance
<[TheBug]>
that will crash the driver from my anrdoid experience
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> put it on performance
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> that is what you suggest?
<[TheBug]>
well in Android you would hit power button to trigger sleep mode on tablet
<[TheBug]>
this would cause the GPU driver to fail because it doesn't understand how to change power states correctly
<[TheBug]>
it would go to sleep and never wake back up
<[TheBug]>
well you would get video output but the drive would esentaill crash
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> okay I will try that if I have the chance to reach it
<[TheBug]>
esentailly*
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> it crash very soon sometimes
<[TheBug]>
A lot of the reasons this board has issues like that is cause intels power states on that SoC especially with 32bit crap is just a clusterfuck
<[TheBug]>
and after they released SDK they never went back to fix anything
<[TheBug]>
so its lived in that state pretty much its entire existance
<[TheBug]>
I even have a comerical version of it in one of those minipc form factors with 64gb emmc and 4GB ram actually
<[TheBug]>
I have it running windows 10 pretty stable, it actually drove 3 wifi ip cameras with Blueiris
<[TheBug]>
and I used quicksync non-stop
<[TheBug]>
as in it was active doing this 24/7 for months and no bluescreen
<[TheBug]>
but thats also not high quality video playback
<[TheBug]>
but I had to leave it in the highest power state in the bios
<[TheBug]>
and I also added a 40mm noctua fan and a 30mmx30mm heatsink in place of the original 'slab of aluminum with thermal pad'
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> nope, its on high performance right now
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> BSOD quickly
Malditron has quit [Quit: Konversation terminated!]
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> not even worm of course
<[TheBug]>
if you want, you can dd an image of the sdcard your using and xz it and post it somewhere I will grab it and test it my self and see if I can figure something that is happening or offer any suggestion
<[TheBug]>
maybe can compare it to images I have in use as well
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> the only way to avoid it is disabling the intel HD graphics
<[TheBug]>
see if different windows version, driver version, etc
<[TheBug]>
provide steps to reproduce what you are doing as well
<[TheBug]>
and I can test it and see if I can find a way to improve it or not
<Armbian-Discord>
<NeonFetch> i have them on the latest official image
