<punit> Is there a standard way to find out the counter frequency on RISC-V? Similar to CNTFRQ_EL0 on Arm or cpuid instruction on x86?
<jrtc27> no
<jrtc27> if you're an OS you can go look at the hardware description (FDT or ACPI tables)
<punit> jrtc27: Should there be? I see that RHCT and device tree carry this information
<jrtc27> if you're userspace, hahahahaha
<jrtc27> there should be a user-readable CSR that tells you this, yes, but that's not how RISC-V is designed, because why would you need that
<punit> DPDK directly refers to the device tree node - but this doesn't work with other firmwares. Ref: https://github.com/DPDK/dpdk/blob/main/lib/eal/riscv/rte_cycles.c#L26
<punit> jrtc27: Feels like you've already hit this issue. Any suggestions on the right forum to raise this discussion?

<palmer> punit: there's a patch to add some timer frequencies to hwprobe, but I forgot to actually finish it...
<fuel> jrtc27, some emulation software in userspace needs things like that
<punit> palmer: Oh great - do you have a patch link? I just sent an email suggesting that hwprobe approach
<palmer> Maybe that was it? It was a while ago, so I don't remember for sure...
<punit> palmer: Thanks. Will take a look - if there's no fundamental objection to the approach, we can propose a patch for inclusion based on the above
<palmer> Sounds good. I didn't test it or anything and it'll need a rebase, but I don't think anyone was opposed
<lu_zero> another|: which link is borked?

<lu_zero> why? dd uses MiB when you use the M modifier
<another|> lu_zero: yes, but 256 would end somewhere in the middle of bootfs, woulfn't it?
<another|> also, doesn't it break gpt backup header?
