When I was in high school in California, I thought there was a really strong man outside my garabage shaking that room specifically
<the_oz>
garage not garbage
<the_oz>
mind couldn't comprehend the first quake
<heat>
you may have been onto something, just saying
<the_oz>
you alright though?
<kazinsal>
reminds me of the 2001 earthquake around here
<kazinsal>
6.8 at the epicenter just north of olympia
<kazinsal>
so it was still a solid 5 and change up here
<the_oz>
washington has "the big one" off it's coast
<the_oz>
not that it will happen definitively within your lifetime
<the_oz>
but DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM
<kazinsal>
yeah, it usually happens every 300-400 years, and the last one was in 1700
<kazinsal>
so it's possible
<kazinsal>
it'd be worst in seattle, and along the coast. vancouver would feel it and take some damage but the fact that we've got the island between us and the fault line helps
<kazinsal>
though the western coast of vancouver island would thus eat absolute shit
<kazinsal>
tofino would def be underwater
<kazinsal>
the scariest part in the 'couv wouldn't necessarily be the quake itself but soil liquefaction. looooots of real marshy land around here
<kazinsal>
a lot of that would just turn into unstable sludge
<the_oz>
and then yellowstone will crasck open like a MAGMA EGG
<kazinsal>
we *are* in the weirdest timeline
<kazinsal>
all the expected potential natural disasters hitting at once would be pretty on point
<kazinsal>
cascadia fault, yellowstone, vesuvius blows up again, maybe we get a tunguska 2.0
<the_oz>
haven't heard of that one
<the_oz>
woah
<kazinsal>
tunguska was a meteor event in the 1900s
<the_oz>
hyuge
<kazinsal>
basically an airbursted nuke in siberia, but caused by an asteroid violently breaking up

excellent
<heat>
the_oz, yep everything's fine here
<the_oz>
good deal
<heat>
when it happened i struggled to understand what it was and it definitely felt nuclear missile attacky enough
<heat>
but, hey, no nuclear winter yet am i right
<kazinsal>
pros: no nuclear apocalypse. cons: still have to go to work tomorrow
<the_oz>
I'll never forget the psyop bill hicks put us through leading up to massive deception by the military that russian nukes were in the air on the day of y2k
<zid>
Felt like a train or really heavy truck rumbling past for the first 10 seconds for me, then slowly got way too much to be that
<zid>
and I had to hold my monitors down

the local authorities use the "SOMETHING REALLY BAD IS HAPPENING" emergency cell tower notification system for amber alerts instead of the dedicated amber alert one, so every time a kid gets disappeared by a methed-out parent everyone's phone explodes with the same warning tone used for incoming ballistic missiles
<the_oz>
iirc they do that for grabbing attention like everyone in the state when like an abductor or whatever
<the_oz>
where that kind of reach could be important

> I'm doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big andprofessional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones. -- Linus Torvalds 25th of August 1991
<kazinsal>
reading early linux documentation is fun. most of it's usenet posts, and the install procedure is more or less described with things like "this is really bad and we should make it less awful, but for now, good luck"
<dostoyevsky>
I think today it's still as bad but Linus is like: if we make this easier we will be flooded by low key coders
<dostoyevsky>
I like to think that archlinux also removed the TUI installers, so that the manjaro people wouldn't flood the forums

i think nvmm makes sense in that it integrates with qemu

i'm *guessing* this in turn makes it easier to intergrate with existing virt management code

Today in osdev: Compiling libavcodec/vp9_mc_template.c crashes gcc with an internal compiler error.

It works -O1 though.... so I added an __attribute__ ((optimize(1))) to the affected function.

I did not feel like learning enough gcc to figure out why "internal compiler error: in copy_reference_ops_from_ref, at tree-ssa-sccvn.cc:1080" reaches gcc_unreachable()
