<armbianfu> Is there a cheap ARM motherboard that has an ATX/mATX form factor yet?
<lanefu> Nope
<armbianfu> Hmm, I heard huwaei will be doing that soon
<armbianfu> but let's say I had a budget of $1k USD, is there anything still, or does that require an even bigger budget?
<adeepv> but miniITX

<buZz> someone could/should just start making miniITX breakouts that support 'all' SBCs
<buZz> some 5V 5A psu . or maybe USB-C PD 20V stuff
<buZz> and passthrough for ethernet/usb , breakout for ATX psu to that 5V psu
<buZz> normal mounting holes, normal IO on the back, include a IO shielf
<buZz> shield*
<buZz> 10x 17x17cm pcb at pcbway is just 110 usd incl shipping (ex importtax)

<adeepv> I'm still looking for an out-of-the-box home router solution. Similar to banana pi r2/r64, but more powerfull.
<IgorPec> out-of-the box = mikrotik? :)

<p0g0_> ubiquiti or openwrt...
<IgorPec> openwrt - depends on hw
<p0g0_> yeah, but the table of hardware has a lot of entries.

<IgorPec> i am affraid a lot half working
<p0g0_> fwiw, even if you don't install openwrt, the data in that table, what radios, RAM etc, is good stuff.
<p0g0_> sure OpenWRT doesn't solve all things for all radios..
<IgorPec> we have here the same problem, just different target. if base things doesn't work on device X and its unstable, it can't be better with openwrt
<IgorPec> they are router / networking oritented. so they can live without HDMI or some video acceleration support, but the rest must work
<p0g0_> well, I've been around the OpenWRT folks since MadWifi (the early Atheros 2.4 Ghz stuff), a lot of devices work well.
<IgorPec> and i have been closely when a flood of cheap general SoC flooded market in past 10y
<p0g0_> Sure, lots of vendors won't play well with an open source outfit. It's not a perfect world for FOSS.
<IgorPec> atheros is known to be good
<IgorPec> but routers of todays can't run around Atheros on 600MHz
<p0g0_> fwiw, the question was about out-of-the-box stuff, and that obviates OpenWRT. The table of hardware and wiki are still an excellent resource for choosing devices.
<IgorPec> i would not trust that table
<IgorPec> its still roughly about 10-15% of surprice factor
<nekomancer[m]> <p0g0_> "ubiquiti or openwrt..." <- apple of router world
<IgorPec> espressobin is there, bananapi r1 as well. both are just garbage
<p0g0_> IgorPec, do you have a better list of devices and their features?
<IgorPec> no. just saying that "big list" doesn't means great value at the same time
<IgorPec> i am just sharing my knowing about devices.
<IgorPec> most of things on the list i have no direct experinces, so i can't tell anything about
<p0g0_> yeah, like I say, I did tech support for the MadWifi driver, and have known a fair bit about OpenWRT. I don't know of any better wiki about wifi hardware. No arguement that there are flaws and gaps, it is nigh all volunteered data.
<IgorPec> openwrt is just fine. it not about that
<IgorPec> its about putting some solution on a hardware that is either total junk or not approriate
<IgorPec> you can run NAS on Rpi or Router on Rpi. But is this even close to optimal hardware?
<lanefu> Nanopi r4s is the only thing I think in SBC that has respectable potential
<lanefu> But I like then edgerouter series from ubiquity. They're a fork of vyatta / vyos
<IgorPec> clearfog as well, but its in higher price range
<adeepv> IgorPec with debian/ubuntu inside. mikrotik no-no-no)
<adeepv> lanefu I saw vyatta come into the world. I'm too old)
<adeepv> I have my eye on clearfog, but I don't really understand the performance of their ClearFog GT 8K
<IgorPec> i only have armada a380 here. which works fine, but its not very performant
<keesj> msg nekomancer[m] that https://aliexpress.com/item/4000260734529.html how did you know it was managed?
