<Armbian-Discord> <Daddy> Could someone help me understand a few things. Not super knowledgeable about Linux kernel stuffs
<Armbian-Discord> <Daddy> So I have the odroid n2+, and the armbian distro comes with the mainline kernel
<Armbian-Discord> <Daddy> Does this kernel have specific patches to it?
<Armbian-Discord> <Daddy> What is meson64?
<Armbian-Discord> <Daddy> I installed wireguard last night with a script, and the script downloaded a kernel from the debian repos - linux-image-rt-arm64 I guess this one has the PREEMPT_RT flag enabled
<Armbian-Discord> <Daddy> Is it safe to use the odroid with this kernel?
<Armbian-Discord> <Daddy> Or should I uninstall this package?
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> start here https://docs.armbian.com/User-Guide_FAQ/ first
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> generic kernels will not exactly damanage your board, but they will not work or work a lot poorer
<ermine[m]> customers!
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> whete to send a bill to ? 🙂
<ermine[m]> armbian devs, of course, everyone wants to run kodi images on their radxa SBCs
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> and what is that armbian problem?
threenp1 has joined #armbian
<ermine[m]> still can't run armbian on my bag of potatoes, so sad
threenp11 has joined #armbian
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> again not a problem of armbian
<ermine[m]> no, no, that's a joke
<ermine[m]> I mean literal potatoes
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> there is a board called potato 😉
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> and where armbian works perfectly fine
<Werner> Indeed
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> bag of potatoes = Armbian cluster with Libre Computer La Potato

<ermine[m]> oh, wow, hetzner is upping prices
<Werner> Hopefully they do not do for existing contracts...
<Werner> I know it is for the auction servers
<Armbian-Discord> <Daddy> I see, so compiling my own kernel is the way to go

<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> This means our operating costs will also go up
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> we are burning lots of power
<ermine[m]> heh, you could move the servers and all to the US, I guess, or Russia (don't they have cheap power?)
<ermine[m]> but if there's gonna be war, I don't even know at that point...
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> we have servers all over the world already, but those are mainly donated
<Werner> And there it is. Got the mail for price increase...13 bucks more... -.-
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> large portion of build farm, which is sucking around 2kw at peak, is attached to my personal bill 😉
<ermine[m]> Werner: for me, that's like an extra $20+, yikes, I love the euro exchange rate... not
<Werner> That is an increase of close to 50%...
archetech has quit [Quit: Konversation terminated!]
<Werner> Funny. I could switch to a server that costs less and offers more lol
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> more what? BW or cpu power?
<ermine[m]> same applies to leaseweb, I hear
<ermine[m]> better CPU and better hardware, probably
<ermine[m]> most hetzner dedis have 1gbit unless it's an athlon 64 one
<Werner> More CPU and RAM
<ermine[m]> hetzner's network is trash for me lol, OVH is ok for me
<ermine[m]> I get 64KB/s with hetzner
<Werner> Most of the time I get the full 1000mbit up and down
<ermine[m]> of course, everyone in Europe raves on and on about hetzner...
<ermine[m]> I'd get a dedi locally/in LA, but I ain't paying $50+ USD/month
<Werner> Guess I cancel the box then once the increased price hits in March
<Werner> Simply no longer worth
<ermine[m]> mmm, imagine if scaleway brings back their ARM dedis due to power costs
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> what you are using it for @werner ?
<ermine[m]> but no, of course not, you need an oversold shitty VPS
<Werner> In terms of Armbian it hosts mirror.armbian.de.
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> ahaa
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> i thought that was at your home
<Werner> Haha I wish I had dedicated gigabit at home
<ermine[m]> oh, I have 100/40mbit in AU, though...
<ermine[m]> but yes, ask aarnet for a mirror
<Werner> and even if I had with the insane increase of electricity costs that not worth doing either
<ermine[m]> but I have had it where their rsync mirror just stopped working at one point
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> sure. well, i have many machines .. if if would be just for hosting files, 10W is enough
<Werner> yeah any sbc with a harddrive connected to it can do that
<ermine[m]> now, why can't my toaster do it? weird
<Werner> because its proprietary :)
<ermine[m]> gotta put armbian on bread first
<ermine[m]> you could with paper, though, with paperbak
<ermine[m]> if that was an x86 loaf, it would require a very powerful oven and be a nightmare to consume

<chewitt> @IgorPec because I know y'all love Amlogic TV boxes :)
<chewitt> fixes the lockups seen with vendor u-boot
<chewitt> (on Beelink devices)
<chewitt> I'll have a more general hack for it in my tree that applies to meson-g12-common.dtsi so it's applied everywhere
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> i love them 😉
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> @chewitt we upgraded u-boot to 2022.01 on meson64 yesterday
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> seems khadas board has reboot issue https://github.com/armbian/build/actions/runs/1728813394
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> any clues where to look?
<chewitt> nice, any drama?
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> no drama
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> i am running simple upgrade + update u-boot + ping check ... else power cycle
<chewitt> no ideas .. I'll add a VIM3 back into my test cycle and see if I see the same
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> K5.15.y
<chewitt> meh, so old ;)
<chewitt> 5.16.2 is the new shiny!
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> well, we try to come up with a LTS release
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> 5.16.y will be "on the edge"
<Armbian-Discord> <Tonymac32> Amlogic boards = headache due to firmwares. Amlogic boards with vendors that try to be helpful with vendor U-boot in eMMC/spi = 7th level of hell.
<Armbian-Discord> <Tonymac32> 😆
<Armbian-Discord> <Tonymac32> At least TV boxes are supposed to have preinstalled stuff. I don't want an SBC having anything on it out of the box unless it is actively maintained and not some crusty garbage that won't work with a modern kernel

<Armbian-Discord> <Tonymac32> I guess the CH32V307 8 uart to USB or ETH chip might be handy after all 😄
<chris64> Hi everyone, I'm trying to build armbian for rockpi s and struggle a bit with the Docker-based build environment. Any of the three approaches fails with E: Unable to locate package zlib1g:i386. Do I have to get into the Docker container first to run ./compile.sh? If yes, which image do I need to run?
