<J22> teepee  just thought  if  lazy U  causes  3mf to have separate  objects  -  this is i problem as  the  speed advantage  is gone cuz  you need one group of objects. Meaning  they can be  multiple meshes (which is great)  but need to be grouped for the export - else you get problems with the slicer  ( or have to merge them )
Joel has joined #openscad
arebil has quit [Quit: My keyboard has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…]
<teepee> J22: yes, lazy union (other than most other experimental features) is not even finished in it's current state
<J22> 3mf  supports also grouped  multiple meshes  ( you can ungroup them in the slicer  if needed )
<teepee> yes, I think that's what the spec calls "constellations"?
arebil has joined #openscad
<J22> sounds celestial  ..   if so this is much better than "separate shells" as this can't work with adjacent objects as they are likely  in multi material prints

<J22> teepee just got an idea for your signal tower - a nice light Diffusor  could be made from clear plastic that is spiral printed as filter  - as each string has nice optical properties and act as a  linear lens, so refraction rise luminosity   here an example for a filter https://www.prusaprinters.org/prints/125053

<nelson_> @teepee, signal tower? I made a two or three lamp signal head for a 1/8th scale model railroad. 7.25" gauge. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2966740
<othx> nelson_ linked to "FLLS Signal by RussNelson" on thingiverse => 1 IRC mentions
<teepee> nelson_: ah, neat, I might use that at some point
<teepee> signal tower we were speaking of is a bit different -> https://imgur.com/a/swHqHT8
<teepee> more like big machine signal tower light
<Scopeuk> teepee that's rather cool
<Scopeuk> I recently got some single colour "led string" which could work for an ultra low profile fixed colour one
<Scopeuk> they are only 2 to 3mm accross but could easily be wrapped arround to do three colour beacon
<othx> Scopeuk linked to YouTube video "How long LED filaments are made" => 1 IRC mentions
<Scopeuk> that design is definately more capeable
<teepee> oh, I have not seen that video yet but it's on my list :)
<teepee> I've seen an example using those for "nixie" number style display
<Scopeuk> yeh I imagine that they might turn up in small scale modeling as "neon" signs too
<teepee> that stuff is cool, I hope it appears on amazon soonish ;-)

<nelson_> @teepee, oh, I see. I knew I was missing something but thought I would contribute just in case.
<nelson_> Changing the subject slightly, I made a curved molding for my kitchen. It has the same profile as the 8' long strips of poly molding from Lowes, but I rotate_extrude'd it with a very tight curve -- far tighter than you could bend it. https://photos.app.goo.gl/snDGZwoLHtsFDsTu5
<teepee> nelson_: I do have some of those https://smile.amazon.de/gp/product/B086V4JQ35/ so your design will come in handy too
<nelson_> teepee, Yes, my design should scale down to fit that. Here it is installed on a two-signal mast: https://photos.app.goo.gl/iXT6fscdMZTz39Vn8 You can't see the diverging track because the signal blocks it.
<nelson_> Another one on a single signal mast: https://photos.app.goo.gl/adX1eXxKuNpaK6A8A The signal is mounted on an ordinary electrical junction box.
<teepee> uh, wait, how big is that model
<teepee> aha, Size: 152.55, 70.00, 34.75 with the scad defaults, that's huge :)
<nelson_> :) Yes, it's for a large scale model railroad. The kind you can easily ride on. Where a locomotive costs US$20,000.
<nelson_> But just to be nice to you, I just purchased several of the 5mm three-lens signals, and I'll adapt my model to fit it.

<teepee> cool
<teepee> those images look just like normal size train
<teepee> we have that here in the city center, probably a bit lager still https://www.parkeisenbahn-dresden.de/?index_eng

<J22> any idea why it renders 30minutes  only to state "no top level geometry"  which is clearly there when rendering only parts or in preview
<teepee> that can happen when mixing 2d and 3d
<teepee> preview does not care about that
<J22> but  didn't that give you a "mix 2D 3D warning"
<Scopeuk> J22 if you are willing/able to share your scad code people might be able to be more specific
<J22> not sure what happens but it works with one value and slight change ends like that ..
<J22> Scopeuk you know my code ..  and there is a lib involved   as i said  A renders fine B renders fine   A+B  " no  top level"  .. now flushing cache   20GB  ..  hmm there are gaps in the memory  graph .. odd
<J22> maybe rendering two projects at the same time wasn't so clever
Guest3782 has joined #openscad
<J22> peaking  45GB   and i only have 32GB
<Scopeuk> so your top level file is ...include libraries... libAPart(); libBPart();? or similar
Guest3782 has quit [Client Quit]
<Scopeuk> that's a huge memory usage
<J22> limit is 44  and it peaked at 49  so maybe that caused it

<teepee> I love the LuckyResistor stuff, but I wish there would be just a scad file :)
<peepsalot> teepee: I think i just about have a working cpack setup, at least for windows mxe cross build
<peepsalot> i'm still trying to figure out how I can deal with mimalloc installing header includes alongside the dll files
<teepee> nice! that's generating then the 2 nsis installers?
<peepsalot> ideally those headers would not be packaged with everything else
<teepee> yeah, that would be a bit odd for the application installer
<peepsalot> yeah it should be able to make the nsis installers (i've only test 64bit so far), in addition to .zip archives
<peepsalot> btw apparently it was a problem in the past, but mxe now has nsis package for 32 *and* 64bit
<teepee> hmm, no MSI support
<teepee> I think it was not so much that the package did not exist
<teepee> it was using the native linux version of nsis for 64 bit but built the mxe package for 32 bit
<teepee> I could be wrong though, all the MXE stuff was introduced by Don, I just continued with the working setup
<J22> have you seen the pip hinges with gears?
<teepee> I don't think I have
<teepee> wow, what size are those images, that takes ages to load :)
<teepee> I hope that's not telekom reverting my network to modem speed
<teepee> whew, nope, 52.98 Mbps, pretty much exactly what the contract said
<J22> loads ok here
<J22> its i bit funny they made the gear that big as it is not taking any load
<teepee> that last one with the hand in picture is somehow broken
<J22> not here ..  all images ..  maybe reload the whole page
<InPhase> Loads pretty fast here. Have you tried using your gigabit Internet connection?
<InPhase> (I jest. One thing my employer gets very right is the bandwidth available on campus.)
<teepee> the internet is fine, not gigabit but 1080p YT plays happily on the other monitor
<teepee> maybe firefox does not like those webp files
ochafik has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
ochafik has joined #openscad
<InPhase> Hmm. Looks like my home internet provider FiOS's lowest advertised speed is now 300 Mbps. When I get home I'll have to run a speed test and see if they upgraded me, or if they're charging me the 300Mbps rate and still giving me the old 100Mbps speed I initially signed up for.
<InPhase> I opted not to pay more because it was hard to find a use case where the difference mattered. But if that's the base rate, that's what I should be getting now.
<teepee> I'm fine with my 50Mbps, supposedly they support 200 here but that's probably just theoretical
<InPhase> I suppose my larger downloads have seemed unusually fast in recent months. That might explain things...
<teepee> :)
