why are the armbian mirrors so slow? it takes ages to apt-get update

<archetech>
Welcome to Armbian 23.02.3 Lunar with Linux 6.2.0-rc1-station-m3 Rock5 w/panCSF
<archetech>
old news I finally got around to installing it
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> yeah but what do i do with it
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> like i dont get
<DC-IRC>
<viraniac> do you need help with something?
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> yes
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> pls
<DC-IRC>
<viraniac> ok with what?
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> my opi0
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> i cant connect to ssh
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> it only worked one time
<DC-IRC>
<viraniac> ok, which image are you using and how are you connected to network?
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> im running armbian 22.05.4 Bullseye and my opi0 is connected using ethernet
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> my router says its turned on
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> but i cant connect to it
<DC-IRC>
<viraniac> what error are you getting when you are trying to connect to it?
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> connection timed out
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> double check correct ip with your router
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> i did
<DC-IRC>
<viraniac> try rebooting. If you have serial console check that for where its stuck
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> The only way to get an idea what is going on "under the hood" is via serial console. Alternativly offline-debug and put the sdcard into your computer, mount the filesystem and hope that there is something useful in the logs.
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> i dont have anything like that
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> Highly recommend to get such a thing. Dirt cheap anyways and absolutely mandatory for serious debugging on SBCs
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> i had omv on it before and then i did a fresh install of armbian on it and this is where the problem started
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> are u guys gone?
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> make sure you don't have two orangepis on your router client list. dont know in particular about this soc but it might have generated a different mac address. therefore new dhcp lease and therefore new ip address
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> are you always that kind of impatient like that?
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> wait i will check with my router
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> no thers only one
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> Since you mentioned that you don't have debug hw handy I suggest next to put out the sdcard and mount it in your pc to check logs. Maybe you find something.
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> how do i check logs
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> im very new to this
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> To Linux in general?
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> yes
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> I see
<DC-IRC>
<viraniac> Which oS do you use on your computer?
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> So I also assume the computer you are using right now is not running Linux as OS?
<DC-IRC>
<viraniac> Which OS do you use on your computer?
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> no
zeemate has joined #armbian
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> Alright, this makes things quite difficult ð
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> chromebook okay?
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> or windows
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> which is easeier
<DC-IRC>
<viraniac> I never used chromebook, but that might be easier than using windows
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> k
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> Other thing you can try is using a different sdcard. Believe it or not, they can die rather quickly and produce random errors.
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> @igorpec just for the unlikely case: OPi0 passed latest smoke test I guess?
<DC-IRC>
<igorpec> yes, smoke tests are alright
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> Awesome
<DC-IRC>
<igorpec> but i didn't start from stable image, but from nightly
<DC-IRC>
<igorpec> so image could still be broken ... but if this is only report, then its not
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> i have no idea what ur talking about
<DC-IRC>
<viraniac> @shivasiddhalt check messages or syslog for messages containing your ip or anything about sshd service. You can also upload the logs on paste.armbian.com or on forums and someone might take a look
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> Aight, I'll give it a quick shot
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> but u dont see a messages var folder
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> but i dont see a messages var folder
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> Hm where did you get bullseye image? Download page offers Jammy and Bookworm only
<DC-IRC>
<viraniac> I do see messages and syslog file in the screenshot you shared earlier
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> from the archive because the latest bullseye version doesnt work
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> Please give me a direct link the image you are trying. Thanks
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> We don't provide pre-built images for it anymore but you can still build your own image containing bullseye as userspace. We'll keep it until something breaks
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> stay online because im gonna check if it works
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> We can only afford to follow the latest releases from both Debian and Ubuntu (LTS variant here)
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> whats the diffrence between cli and minimal cli?
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> k
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> to cut a long story short: minimal has just the bare minimum on board to allow the system to establish network connection and use apt
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> The normal variant has the most common basic tools on board including armbian-config
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> okay
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> i will download CLI
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> wish me luck

<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> okay

<shivasiddhalt> but stay online
<DC-IRC>

<shivasiddhalt> and it doesnt work
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> First boot may take longer because the filesystem expands over the whole sdcard. Be patient
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> Network error: Connection timed out
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> ok il try again
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> Just power it up and let it sit for like two minutes. Or longer if your sdcard is either crappy or very big or both
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> mine is fast but big
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> 30 gb
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> or is that small?
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> Depends on use case. Most of my sdcards are 32 or 64G and sandisk extreme U3
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> OMG IT WORKS
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> OMG OMG OMG
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> AAAAHHH
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> but this is the same thing that happend last time
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> it worked for one boot and then it stopped working
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> anyways ill set it up
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> I checked reboot on mine and it worked flawless
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> k i will notify u if it doesnt work
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> on reboot
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> If it does not there is nothing I can do from here any further. Check the video on how to proceed in debugging (and get yourself a USB UART adapter as mentioned :P)
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> ok
MrFixIt has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> ok im still setting it up
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> Man I just realize how slow the OPi0 is compared to the RK3588 based boards ð
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> Kind a unfair comparison though
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> but its cheap
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> and tiny
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> and cute
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> ok im gonna do a reboot
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> moment of truth...
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> yeah. I used to have an Nanopi neo3 which has a similar form factor but that died on me ð
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> its rebooting
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> IT WORKS
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> THANKS WERNER
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> UR THE BEST

<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> Dutch (netherlands)
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> is my keyboard layout
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> try login via root and use `passwd` to change the users password again, maybe something simple like 12345 just for testing
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> ok
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> ok i updated it
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> it works
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> thx
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> for ur support agin
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> np
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> without u i couldnt have fixed this
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> i did that and the immage is downloading
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> but thx
<Herc>
yw
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> ugh
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> @werner are u there
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> i still cant connect
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> What did you do?
<Herc>
did you give the 1st boot enough time to expand the FS?
<Herc>
(you seem to be an impatient person) ;)
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> isint a minute enoughj
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> ?
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> or do i do i reinstall
<Herc>
in the past it took up to six minutes
<Herc>
it improved lately tho
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> fine il do a reinstall and this time wait instead of rebooting it
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> We cannot provide support for any other images than the latest available on the download page. Images from archive are just there for comparison or historical purpose.
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> ok
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> il set a timer of ten minutes
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> i am impatient tho
<Herc>
it helps to connect any kind of monitor too (even a tv w/ hdmi input)
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> the opi0 doesnt have a video output
<Herc>
oh
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> i started the timer
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> 9 minutes left
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> Also take note that images might have been replaced for a reason, like because they were broken. So there can be unbootable images present in the archives.
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> brb
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> that was more than 10 minutes
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> ok now the moment of truth
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> it doesnt work
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> im gonna reboot
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> doesnt work
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> ugh

<shivasiddhalt> @werner are u there
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> this is hopeless
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> Latest image is proven to work. Status of archive images is - as mentioned - unknown. For debugging - also as mentioned - watch the video. Besides that there is nothing further I can do.
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> then the only thing that i can do is..
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> DITCH ARMBIAN
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> yeah im just gonna install debian instead
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> my problems would have been solved if OMV 7 was out
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> sry i was mad
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> omv is known to cause all sorts of trouble since it heavily messes with the system. that for example can (but also may not) include connectivity issues. we had that several times over the years and people blame Armbian while Armbian was working fine before installation...
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> sry werner
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> no worries. most people simply dont know
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> is deb 12 new?
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> Debian 12 aka Bookworm is the latest Debian release, yes.
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> but like is it new or has it been around for a while
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> when was it released
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> " Debian 12.0 was initially released on June 10th, 2023. "
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> Your choice. Can only offer ð
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> umm debian is way more complicated
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> ok im sticking with armbian i cahnged my mind
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> this is way too complicated
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> i just wanted to create a user and its giving a whole load of options
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> before all of this i would install a older version of bullseye and it would work
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> so im gonna try again
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> Fun fact: The Orangepi makers adopted the Armbian build framework (an old version of it) long time ago to make their own images. So basically you get - more or less - Armbian even when using vendor images ð
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> lol
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddhalt> ok im gonna flash the image
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> good luck. I'm out for today
