We use to do half the work manual `in some cases` and then move it to the CNC and even then would need to stop the program in between. Adjustments.

I use to work for a sprinkler company... Like actual engineering for malls, government facilities, and high rises and what not. I did both the software and in the shop shit. I think CNC work was way more scary.

I find it comes down to lengths. If we are talking pipe there is schedule and length differences. The people in the office usually don't notice and the sales me and higher ups are just looking at profit. That is where some like me comes in. I've talked to everyone and I know the programs... Plus I mingle... Lets get it done right, I don't need to make a scene and everyone is happy.
