somlo: does alibaba/xuantie only use tsmc as fab? not smic or other china fab? also, are there any nonchinese chip and board/sbc or project trying to achieve such, one that can run a linux desktop os , full browser, watch vids etc? y its taking so long to announce such a project let alone start shipping nonbeta hw revisions for something like visionfive2 by the rest of world?

bbyoume: I'm not actually familiar with any fabs or their customers, regardless of geography :)
<somlo>
my own research is predicated on trying to work around having to trust a fab (any fab), mainly by trading performance (by using fpga based soft-cores)
<somlo>
so any actual asic work in progress or in planning is not something I'd know about

I think the initial post from the TechTechPotato guy blew it out of proportion. 20% is tough but the tech industry has seen a lot of headcount cuts this year and SiFive is a startup after all.
<drewfustini>
I'm happy it didn't turn out to be as drastic as the initial blog post indicated
<drewfustini>
Also, who knows what will actually happen, but Bob Monkman from SiFive did post on LinkedIn that the HiFive Pro will be at the RISC-V Summit (first week of November)
<drewfustini>
The SiFive boards do tend to be expensive but I will give them credit for having released pretty decent manuals for the FU540 and FU740 SoCs in the past
<bjdooks>
I wonder if I can ask for my sifive github access back and start pushing some of the patche for hrc out

<davidlt>
drewfustini, Pro P550 is listed on Canonical Summit page.
<davidlt>
They will be showing Ubuntu on it IIRC.
<drewfustini>
nice... yes, now I remember that the Bob Monkman post said they would have it in the Canonical booth at the Summit
<drewfustini>
Join us and check out Ubuntu running on the HiFive Pro P550, the most performant RISC-V developer platform on the market. The demo will highlight the unique performance benefits of SiFive’s Performance P550 cores.
