<sicelo>
everything in /dev/dri/* has root:video ownership
<dsc_>
nice

(bedtime here :))
<sicelo>
heh, you travel a lot. last we talked we were almost in same TZ
<Wizzup>
must have been ~1.5 weeks ago
<Wizzup>
I hadn't travelled for 4-5 months iirc :)

freemangordon: btw, why did we have to remove xserver-xorg-legacy? i see we have a conflict for it against h-d. i'm just doing some reading and it appears that its Xwrapper stuff might be needed to get around the rootless X11 issue i'm facing
<sicelo>
i'd appreciate any help/suggestions for troubleshooting. we've established that running X as root starts hildon just fine.
<sicelo>
(oh btw, for some reason it's not using 3D accel yet ... but i can look at that properly later)

maybe the autologin stuff is not working properly in my setup? the previous screenshots were from booting to recovery mode, then running startx
<sicelo>
as root, that is
<sicelo>
now, in recovery, i did
<sicelo>
login, entered user and its password. then startx. there's no x11 error this time
<sicelo>
i now see "Cannot run in framebuffer mode. Please specify busIDs for all framebuffer devices"
<gnarface>
hmm, try specifying the busID in xorg.conf?
<gnarface>
probably a red herring, but maybe worth a try
<sicelo>
what is busID? and i've removed the xorg.conf that i had
<gnarface>
i think xorg.conf calls it PCIID or something like that
<gnarface>
i'd have to review the docs
<gnarface>
it's basically the bus address of the video card you want to use
<gnarface>
it's usually not ambiguous, but sometimes if you have more than one it needs you to be explicit
<gnarface>
curiously, this warning, which i've never seen before, seems to hint that might be related: (WW) VGA arbiter: cannot open kernel arbiter, no multi-card support
<gnarface>
you have a phone with two video cards???
<sicelo>
may I ask: do you use Maemo Leste?
<gnarface>
sorry, no but i use devuan
<gnarface>
i just felt sorry because everyone was asleep so i answered even though i don't know anything about hildon
<sicelo>
ok. yes, the L5 shows card0 and card1. the same is true for the omap devices (N900, Droid4, etc.)
<gnarface>
i have dealt with the suid xorg -> user mode xorg transition on other hardware though
<gnarface>
in general i've got a lot of xorg experience
<gnarface>
ah, i see, interesting
<gnarface>
yea, i'd say force it to the other
<gnarface>
you don't need a whole xorg.conf anymore, you just need to specify the sections you want to change from default/autodetect
<gnarface>
man page lists it
<gnarface>
BusID "bus-id"
<gnarface>
search for this on there
<gnarface>
you might be able to get away with just a Device section
