It looks like I am indeed blaming matrix for all the join messages but did not diable those messages in my client.. (also not for normal users)

I think only half of the recent block of joins/quits is due to Matrix

there's actually a software update for the bridge that will prevent this, but it's not something I've deployed yet

i don't see noise. but i always set join/leave to ignore
