<aaabbb> bcn_: av1 is even better, but it's very slow to encode (especially if you don't use svt-av1 and especially especially if you're using libaom-av1)

<bcn_> aaabbb: thanks for the tip. I queued it up to try out! this is kinda fun!
<bcn_> I see av1 has not the concept of speed levels
<furq> that's up to the encoder, not the codec
<furq> at least svt-av1 has presets
<aaabbb> svt-av1 has worse compression than rav1e or libaom-av1, but it's way faster, and it'll still probably be better than hevc
<bcn_> kdenlive I think doesnt late svt-av1 only libaom-av1 :(
jb3 has joined #ffmpeg
<aaabbb> why are you using kdenlive and not ffmpeg or at least handbrake?
<aaabbb> libaom-av1 is good but it is very very slow
<aaabbb> also svt-av1 only works if you have hardware that supports it, it's not a pure software encoder. but if x265 is working well for you, then that's good!
<another|> wat?
<another|> do you have a source for your outlandish claim: "svt-av1 only works if you have hardware that supports it, it's not a pure software encoder" ?
<aaabbb> another|: i thought it was the intel accelerated one
<aaabbb> i might be wrong, which one am i thinking of then?
<another|> It is mainly developed by Intel and Netflix. What's your point?
<aaabbb> another|: you're right, i'm wrong. i was confusing it with another implementation
<aaabbb> i was mixing it up with
<aaabbb> *with qsv-av1
<aaabbb> anyway my bad, another| you can just point out that i might be confusing it with something else instead of calling it an outlandish claim :)
<another|> How could I possibly know what's going on inside your head?
<aaabbb> another|: you can't, but clearly you knew i was wrong
<aaabbb> it's more polite to say "svt-av1 is software-only". i have dyslexia and i've mixed up svt and qsv a lot
<aaabbb> anyway my point still stands, libaom-av1 has better compression than svt-av1, but it's so slow that it's not worth using if you only have an hour to encode
<another|> It's as slow as you set it to be
<aaabbb> another|: libaom-av1 is *very* slow, even on its fastest setting
<another|> that being said, svt-av1 has generally better multithreading
<aaabbb> it's not optimized for speed (at this point)
<aaabbb> bcn_: does kdenlive have rav1e?
<another|> the "fastest setting" is probably not what you think. because realtime mode exists for webrtc
<aaabbb> another|: is that competitive with x265 though?
<aaabbb> at equivalent speed
<aaabbb> i'd be very surprised if libaom-av1 could encode at realtime speed efficiently on most computers
<aaabbb> -cpu-used 8 -usage realtime input 320x240, 8.9 fps lol
<another|> realtime goes from 8..11
<another|> and it's geared towards realtime usage, not quality
<aaabbb> exactly my point
<aaabbb> 1x speed libaom-av1 will almost always look worse than 1x speed x265
<another|> possibly
<aaabbb> that makes me curious about what kind of input would look better for 1x libaom-av1

<tmr232> Hello! I am currently trying to make a supercut of a single video file using the `-f concat` filter and a command file. The command file has `file`, `inpoint` and `outpoint` commands. In the resulting video, the correct parts of the video are there, but there are many issues. The audio is missing in some parts, there are video glitches, and the video also jumps around a bit. The source file is an MKV file. During the conversion, I
<tmr232> am getting messages saying "on-monotonic DTS in output stream", "DTS 5834 < 8091 out of order". I tried looking online for solutions, but none seemed to work. Can you provide me with any pointers as to resolving this? Thanks!

<bcn_> aaabbb: I don't see rav1e in kdenlive this libaomav1 is redic. 2 days to encode 3 minutes of video
<JEEB> libaom is the reference dec/enc thing, a research project. while it has parameters to go faster, it's not one of the faster encoders around
<JEEB> SVT-AV1 was made the "production AV1 encoder" from AOM

<ppw> hey guys, I was wondering if anyone's aware of a "spek-like" app that would display the frame rates per second of a variable frame rate video file across the entire length of the video.
<ppw> I guess if I could get ffmpeg to show me the FPS for each second of the video, I could send the data to matplotlib or something and let it plot the graph?
<devinheitmueller> ppw: I would assume that would be pretty easy to do just with ffprobe and a bit of Excel arithmetic. Dump all the frames, grep for csv, then just count how many frames are within 90000 blocks for the PTS column.
Marth64 has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]

<devinheitmueller> ppw: ./ffprobe -show_frames -print_format csv ../../KGO-HD.ts |grep "video,3" | awk -F "," '{print int($5 / 90000)}'|uniq -c
<devinheitmueller> result: 40 69699
<devinheitmueller> 60 69700
<devinheitmueller> 60 69701
<devinheitmueller> 60 69702
<devinheitmueller> 60 69703
<devinheitmueller> 60 69704
<devinheitmueller> (the above example file is 59 FPS with constant frame rate, but the same would work with VFR)
<kepstin> note that "fps" isn't really meaningful at short durations, what you're really getting and measuring is the duration of each frame (i.e. the difference between the pts of the current frame and pts of the next frame)
<ppw> devinheitmueller: oh, neat! thanks
<devinheitmueller> It’s a quick/dirty solution, but it’s what I could cook up in two minutes in front of a shell and it returned the expected result.

<ppw> devinheitmueller: why is 90000 an important number though?
<JEEB> it's the stream time base
<JEEB> there is also the _time values which are already in seconds according to the time base, but of course end up being floating point
Haxxa has joined #ffmpeg
<kepstin> 90000 just happens to be the timebase of mpeg-ts; different formats (and in some formats, different files) will have different timebases.
<JEEB> yea, you can see it with `ffprobe -of json -show_streams -i INPUT.thing`
<JEEB> that will output the time base
<JEEB> (also depending on your language of preference json might be simpler to parse than ad-hoc INI :)

<devinheitmueller> Yeah, I specifically did show_frames so that it would reorder. I guess alternatively I could have put the output through “sort” before “uniq” to achieve the same effect.
