<DC-IRC> <rpardini> Hopefully fixed with latest PR I sent. If you do KERNEL_CONFIGURE for image build, it will complain at ya with a warning and instructions to do it "properly", but either way should work.

<yang2> This weekend will be organised a Libreplanet FLOSS conference. It start with an introduction talk by RMS at 15:00 EDT time https://www.fsf.org/live + https://libreplanet.org . You can use command 'date --date="Mar 17 2023 15:00:00 EDT"' to calculate local time

<DC-IRC> <Oscar Björkman> Beginner here, I have a Rock 4 C+ and I wanted to use armbian for a project during which I won't be able to run a desktop on it or work directly on the device and I can't seem to wrap my head around cross-compiling. How do I go about obtaining a cross-compile toolchain? I get lost whenever I have to cross-compile anything requiring more than libc pretty much.

<p0g0> you might consider using a VM and running a plain old vanilla install and toolchain.
<DC-IRC> <Oscar Björkman> You mean running a VM on my host and develop and compile inside it?
<p0g0> yes
<p0g0> that dodges the whole tool chain issue if you set up the VM right
aasami_ has quit [Quit: Lost terminal]
<DC-IRC> <Oscar Björkman> Do you have any good tips for VMs to use? I run Ubuntu 22.04 on the host and target would be a Rock 4 with armbian(deb/ubuntu doesnt matter).
<DC-IRC> <Oscar Björkman> A better word than good might be easy 😄
<p0g0> As I look around for that, I see Raxda has a scripted build system using docker for the rock pi4. wiki.raxda.com/Rockpi4/dev/build-Armbian
<DC-IRC> <Oscar Björkman> I only know of docker, which I never used, and QEMU which I tried and failed to use
<DC-IRC> <Jason123> the link does not work but I would assume its just the armbian build tool and that just builds an armbian image
<p0g0> using the Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) make qemu pretty easy- You'd look for the same armbian kernel that is on the device you are building for now.
<DC-IRC> <Oscar Björkman> Oh, I didn't try using VMM with it. I'll start there!
<DC-IRC> <Oscar Björkman> Thank you. It was very helpful!
<p0g0> well, gl, you still have a lot on your plate even without cross-compiling.
<DC-IRC> <Oscar Björkman> Bare-Metal is so easy compared to this 😂 but I think I'll like embedded linux once I get used to it!
<p0g0> It is still linux, though the boot sequence is not like GRUB. It runs on SBC/CPU stuff not MCU (AVR/ESP/etc) gear.
