Please excuse my ignorance and inexperience with IRC. I am going through the Yocto project Quick Build steps and I ecnountered a fault that I am too inexperienced to debug, so I thought I'd notify the documentation maintainers. I think this is the place mentioned for reporting such stuff. Am I in the right place?

tyn: yes, you are in the right place and doing fine with IRC foo. You can describe the issue here perhaps but better still sign-up in bugzilla.yoctoproject.org and report a docs bug.
<tyn>
vmeson: thanks, I'll use bugzilla to report the problem - I'm sure it's easier for the team to manage it that way.
<vmeson>
tyn: cool. I think we manually validate new accounts due to spam bots so please be patient for a day or three with people being on holiday.
<tyn>
I'm afraid I can't initaite bugzilla registration because I use Apple's email proxy and it only lets me reply, so I will raise the problem here. I hope it doesn't complicate managing it.
<tyn>
I encounter an error when I get to step 4 of the Customizong You Build for Specifc Hardware section of the Quick Build part of the Yocto Documentation. The "bitbake-layers add-layer ../meta-altera" command fails with a notification "ERROR: Layer meta-altera is not compatible with the core layer which only supports these series: styhead (layer is compatible with mickledore honister kirkstone)".
<tyn>
I am unsure if this is a real fault or if I completed the prior step incorrectly. To complete the prior step I simply added MACHINE ?= "cyclone5" on its own line in the local.conf file. I completed all the prior steps without successfully. I am running on a clean install of the latest Debian Xfce.

Hi and happy new year, I have gotten GPL sources from a vendor but I can't figure out how to extract the u-boot config I can build it fine but it looks like the files are deleted once build is done, any way to avoid this?
<SlimeyOTG>
It is yocto sdk 1.9

For product 30XX the kernel is build seperatly as part of yocto. If want to build kernel for 3040 then follow the steps
<SlimeyX>
1. cd linux_sdk_freescale_yocto/main.
<SlimeyX>
3. make bsap3040.
<SlimeyX>
2. source adtran-setup-env -m bsap3040
<SlimeyX>
This will generate a tar adtran-bsap-image-minimal-bsap3040-20190319054409.rootfs.tar.gz in the direcotry "build_bsap3040/tmp/deploy/images" file which contains all binaries.

SlimeyX: You can find where rm_work is configured (probably in your local.conf though) using this: fgrep -rnwI 'your_project_root_dir' -e 'rm_work'
<tyn>
SlimeyX: Take care though, stopping rm_work may cause you to use a lot more disk space.
<SlimeyOTG>
No worries, thanks I'll try it when I get some time heh night
<SlimeyOTG>
Really all I want is the final u-boot config how it needs to be for the machine to boot

Thanks

I'm wanting to build a riscv64 bigendian system, is there an easy way to just say build the qemuriscv64 with big-endian, or do i need to make some new qemuriscv64b?

Is there any documentation on how to perform housekeeping (e.g. removing stale entries) on the hash equivalence database available? I saw that garbage collection is implemented but based on the implementation I'm struggling to see how this can be used to only drop stale entries.

philipl_: we've not got around to implementing that :(

philipl_: basically the idea is compare your sstate against the hash equiv and delete anything which doens't have a match
<RP>
we did at least add a deletion API...

ooh, a continuation question about how third party dependencies work. If say, the FSF stopped hosting the sources for gnu coreutils, presumably the maintainer of Scarthgap would ideally find an alternative source and update it. So I could just pull such a fix and the problem would fix itself?
<farmadupe>
So in the situation where I didn't yet have a backup strategy, I'd have to be most worried about some hypothetical situation where it was no longer possible to substitute an alternative source host
<farmadupe>
So absent of weird and arcane licensing or patent issues, it's fairly unlikely that the sources for oe-core would vanish without trace?
<RP>
farmadupe: if you retain DL_DIR, you'd still have your own copy of it so you'd never even hit that issue
<RP>
farmadupe: the project also maintains a source mirror so in theory we have a copy if the upstream disappears too, at least for oe-core and meta-oe
<RP>
farmadupe: you can use PREMIRRORS to direct a build to check somewhere else first before the upstrea,
<agodard>
farmadupe: from past experiences I also needed to run "bitbake target --dry-run" in addition to "--runall=fetch", to fetch the uninative tarball. I don't know if this is still a problem, though.
<philipl_>
RP: that sounds like an interesting idea and i'll look into that. was it ever considered that the server also updates the mark when an entry is looked up and it doesn't have a mark yet (this would at least ensure that the db updates are limited to the first lookup). however this has the drawback that hashserv lookup requests which can be fulfilled by the client's local cache are hidden from the server so it may erroneously consider some entries as
<philipl_>
stale
