<palmer> IMO this is one of those things where we'll have to see what HW shows up. If vector crypto is super common then it might not be worth doing the V implementation, but if more V-without-crypto stuff shows up then it's probably worth looking into

<sorear> riscv-cheri got rid of all of the ISAv9 load/store .cap .ddc instructions so the only way to do code generation in the hybrid ABI is with liberal use of cmodeswitch, and cmodeswitch effectively needs to execute without a flush?
<jrtc27> I'm not a fan, but hybrid is also trash
<jrtc27> so eh
<jrtc27> but yes
<jrtc27> it shouldn't be hard to make it not flush though, it's just 1 bit of state to keep track of in the decoder
<jrtc27> at least, that's my claim
ksbedfordjr has joined #riscv
<ksbedfordjr> hey guys
<ksbedfordjr> whats going on with the debian servers
<jrtc27> context?..
<ksbedfordjr> Calling artifact function [ artifact_armbian-base-files_prepare_version() ]
<ksbedfordjr> curl: (28) Operation timed out after 10003 milliseconds with 0 bytes received
<ksbedfordjr> Package name parsed
<ksbedfordjr> Could not find package filename for 'base-files' in 'https://packages.debian.org/sid/riscv64/base-files/download' [ looking for base-files ]
<jrtc27> ok so packages.debian.org is down
<ksbedfordjr> ok
<jrtc27> why are you scraping that, anyway?..
<ksbedfordjr> we have a builder that uses it
<jrtc27> that exists for humans to read
<ksbedfordjr> is there a better place to get it
<jrtc27> (also, doesn't seem to be down, just slow to respond, so your 10s timeout is a bit aggressive)
<jrtc27> well what is "it"
<ksbedfordjr> this is the armbian riscv builder
<jrtc27> no, the thing you want to get
<ksbedfordjr> so I dont get why they do it this way
<ksbedfordjr> the base-files deb
<ksbedfordjr> for sid
<jrtc27> deb.debian.org?..
<jrtc27> or another mirror of your choosing/
<ksbedfordjr> under b there is no base-files deb pkg
<jrtc27> (i.e. go download the sid binary-riscv64 Packages file, parse it to find the package version and download the file with the corresponding name)
<jrtc27> dunno where you're looking
<ksbedfordjr> base-files_13+b2_riscv64.deb
<jrtc27> yeah it's right there in that directory
<ksbedfordjr> ?
<ksbedfordjr> this is not my builder so I am trying to fix things sorry
<another|> not sure why you'd manually need to download any of those files
<jrtc27> I know, but my answers are "(a) increase the timeout (wherever that is) (b) fix the code to not scrape HTML"
<ksbedfordjr> its not me its the tool thats pulling it
<jrtc27> I get that
<ksbedfordjr> I did nto write the tool
<sorear> jrtc27: kind of surprised, i thought the hybrid abi was one of cheri's main selling points
<jrtc27> but it won't magically fix itself, unless maybe you wait for it to respond more quickly
<jrtc27> sorear: eh, sort of
<jrtc27> that it exists so you can interface between the two worlds, yes
<jrtc27> using capabilities at scale within it, no, it's awful, purely from a C language perspective
<jrtc27> the annotations end up everywhere and you have a massive diff that gives you little security benefit
<jrtc27> the main selling points are memory safety from purecap and compartmentalisation
<another|> ksbedfordjr: well, either fix it or wait for p.d.o to come back online
<jrtc27> in a way that's transitionable
<ksbedfordjr> I am working to fix it
