here's very specifically what's going on

so this branch has all the code in one big file, so it's one translation unit. it knows how much data to expect from the functions when it compiles main

2nd branch has 2 files with no declerations (fixing with extern), and some of the functions return structs. but gcc doesn't know that and assumes it's an int. and this breaks stack handling causing instructions that erronously clear the pointer
