Is it something unique about source-based distros that amplifies the tension between "super stripped-down, easy for experts to customize" and "supports a lot of end-user software out of the box"? Somehow I doubt that darfo would have framed the conflict in those terms, if CRUX were still distributing binary packages like in the early days.

The benefit of switching to a source-based model is that CRUX could expand its ports repositories without needing to invest in a huge amount of hosting infrastructure. It's similar to the jump in scale that SiFuh is facing, trying to find a host for his 405-MiB ISO after getting by for so many years with dpaste.com for sharing small text snippets.

Having to host all those binary packages would act as a natural constraint on the size of the port repositories, preventing the runaway growth that SiFuh characterizes as "being raped and turned into the next REDHAT". But if all you have to host is a bunch of Pkgfiles, signatures and patches, then there's little to stand in the way of such growth in the ports collections.
