Is there an ArchLinxu flavor of ARMbian?
<popolon>
I'm tired by ubuntu breaking patches :(
<popolon>
so much things broken on the os
<popolon>
including advanced keyboards usage
<popolon>
keybord switching and iBus have some problems too
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> why do you think arch is not broken too?
<popolon>
i never said it has no broken things
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> which ubuntu version you have troubles with btw?
<popolon>
but these basics things work as made by devs
<popolon>
Ubuntu 22.04
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> i have more or less pretty good experience with userland
norwich has joined #armbian
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> lts versions should be more polished
<popolon>
that's LTS
<popolon>
22.04 is Ubuntu LTS
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> yes
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> not hearing much complains about
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> but i believe bugs exists
<popolon>
aah you want to say of not using LTS, so less Ubuntu specific breaking things
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> not LTS is getting closer to arch
<popolon>
I'm afrait to loosse again HDMI output if I upgrade
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> well, that is unrelated to ubuntu
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> at least with armbian
<popolon>
(need to upgrade kernel to last one, that doesn't have HDMI working on my board version
<popolon>
yes, this is unrelated to ubuntu, but need to update all packages to be able to do a release upgrade
<popolon>
and I already fine tuned lot of things
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> actually not, just switch kernel
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> You don't need to switch packages tp upgrade your kernel.
<popolon>
else I seen there are tools to convert arch packges to *deb distro
<popolon>
like alien for RPM
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> but don't understand benefits of arch here
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> Agreed
<popolon>
to have up todate software and less patched than authors one
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> its just different packaging manager
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> switch to ubuntu lunar then
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> or debian sid
<popolon>
I will look at it thanks
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> those have more or less identical packages (latest what exists)
<popolon>
i choosen ubuntu due to ppa for managing acceleration
<popolon>
not sure that ppa can be used in debian
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> officially not
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> but can be hacked
<popolon>
Maybe I should try to make a debian(distro) package of it
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> He could just add sid deb-src and dpkg-buildpackage the kernel even
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> PPA is just a repository with debian packages
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> or the ubuntu devel version
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> its bookworm right now right?
<popolon>
for all ubuntu upgrade, I need to switch back to last kernel, but I've my serial wire, should just re-enable my x86 :(. (or an arm board, maybe, didn't think about...)
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> yeah
<popolon>
thanks for your help, I will test these ways
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> Yeah can add Bookwork in debian or Lunar and build the src kernel package

Hello; just joined the Armbian Forum; quite the newbie to Libera.Chat; intermediate Linux skills. I am attempting to install a Xfce Desktop version of Armbian (tried both Bullseye and Jammy) on a Banana Pi M5. Jammy Xfce initially worked but then broke on an apt update. Bullseye initial boot hangs on the initramfs part of the initial startup. Any info I can reference to get a working Xfce deskotop on the BPi M5 using either Armbian
<Panfisher>
Jammy or Armbian Bullseye? Thanks!
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> working desktop = Jammy XFCE -> sudo armbian-config -> system -> freeze kernel updates -> update ...
<Armbian-Discord>
<c0rnelius> you said changed dash to bash
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> what is the advantage of dash?
<archetech>
dash is smaler/faster
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> hmm, i use ZSH, which is slow and bulky 😉
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> but fast enough for me
<Armbian-Discord>
<EfeCTN> Dash is not really useful without busybox
<archetech>
gets in the way of compiling

<rpardini> I hadn't heard of dash in some 15 years, congrats.
<Armbian-Discord>
<rpardini> any of you heading to FOSDEM 23?
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> not sure yet
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> you?
<Armbian-Discord>
<rpardini> wife wants to go -- don't ask, can't explain
<Armbian-Discord>
<rpardini> but not sure yet either, CfP closed in December, a bit late now
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> yeah, for that sure
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> it would be interesting to compare pre and post corona fosdem
<Armbian-Discord>
<NicoD> I could go to FOSDEM. Too bad it's in winter. Last time I went it was horrible weather. Ice cold and raining. Would have been a lot nicer in Summer. I'll check what stands there are and if it's interesting enough to make a video out of it I can go.
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> stands will not show much new
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> lectures are what makes fosdem fosdem
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> knowledge in that
<Armbian-Discord>
<NicoD> Pine64, but I don't want to promote them too much for free...
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> stands are like advertisements on TV 🙂
<Armbian-Discord>
<NicoD> Indeed, but my brain can't follow most of the lectures 🙂 Many are very complicated and advanced.
<Armbian-Discord>
<NicoD> And lectures are already on Youtube. So no need for me to film that. They do that way better.
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> yeah, so need to find different perspecrtive
<Armbian-Discord>
<NicoD> I would like to go nag the Gnome team about why they have gnome-extensions, gnome-extension-manager and gnome-tweaks instead of having it all in the settings menu...
<Armbian-Discord>
<EfeCTN> i always hated gnome developers. they're not listening the community
<archetech>
theres only 2 questions that matter to me whats twice as fast as a rk3588 on arm and when's plasma 6 beta coming out ;)
