<Jason123> There are many usb wifi adapters that work on linux that are under $50
<Armbian-Discord>
<Jason123> for devices that support pcie or m.2 I recommend wifi cards that use intel since its the best in the linux space

<Robin> Hmm, I don't seem to be able to install chromium-browser via the customization script. It installs in the build, but when I boot, the browser is not able to start due to the error command /user/bin/chromium-browser requires the chromium snap to be installed. Any idea on how I can fix this issue in my build?
<Armbian-Discord>
<Werner> I assume you simply put soimething like "apt install chromium-browser" in your customization script?
<Armbian-Discord>
<Werner> In that case Ubuntu only delivers a dummy package with that name via apt that does not actually deliver chromium but this text message to nag you using snap crap.
<Armbian-Discord>
<Werner> There are probably 3rd party PPAs out there that build actually debs to install via apt
<Armbian-Discord>
<Robin> So, yes I do that command in the build script, BUT, the problem I have is that when I reinstall it on the device itself, it just works...
<Armbian-Discord>
<Werner> Hm odd. Did you execute apt update beforehand?

yes, I know you said 'under 50USD' but I am more specifically referring to budget wireless adapter devices, I don't care about cards, because not every one has a PCI slot. I am talking about USB, this USB wireless adapter cost me a cool 14USD which is a bargain, and again, it uses a chipset from a well known manufacturer, Realtek
<Sabotender>
it supports USB 3.0 for fast data transfer with the higher bandwidth support. These are all important for people interested in productive throughput

<Armbian-Discord>
<Robin> Yep!
<Sabotender>
also many ARM-based devices won't have a PCI slot anyway, and USB would be their only option. and if they are using and utilising such an embedded device, they weren't spending much to acquire it in the first place, and I highly doubt they would be interested in breaking the bank to get an expensive wireless adapter device anyway.
<Armbian-Discord>
<Robin> It just installs, that's no issue, the main issue is here that it just decides not to work on the orangepione
<Armbian-Discord>
<Robin> Then I need to manually re-install it
<Armbian-Discord>
<Werner> Hm do we even ship chromium for armhf?
<Sabotender>
the point I am trying to make is that there should be support, out of the box support, for these wireless adapters
<Sabotender>
I just don't want anyone to go though the same heart ache and stress that I went though, which was ridiculous
<Sabotender>
it was not easy
<Armbian-Discord>
<Werner> We do not....but no clue where it grabs after boot
<Armbian-Discord>
<Werner> On the other hand why do you want to run DE and Browser on OPi1? With 512M memory is quite limited
<Armbian-Discord>
<Robin> This is what I do in that customize script.
<Armbian-Discord>
<Robin> I know it's really limited, but it's to just display a full-screen browser page (fairly static)
<Armbian-Discord>
<Werner> Hm using FF or vivaldi instead isn't an option as workaround?
<Armbian-Discord>
<Robin> We are looking at more powerfull hardware, in which that build script can come in handy.
<Armbian-Discord>
<Robin> If vivaldi can support the same things for automation (puppeteer and such) then, yes! We need some browser automations we use with the debug tools
<Armbian-Discord>
<Werner> Cannot help with that sorry, no clue if that is the case.
<Armbian-Discord>
<Robin> Yeah, thought so :p
<Armbian-Discord>
<Robin> No problem tho!
<Armbian-Discord>
<Werner> As for now I suggest to add some debugging info into the customization to get an idea where it fetches the chromium package from and what it install and then check against what happens after boot reinstall

<Jason123> There is a list of usb wireless adapters that work in linux and some of them are cheap
<Sabotender>
I don't doubt that, absolutely, but there should be wider support. I know that many can only be supported on a case by case basis
<Sabotender>
as a matter of fact, I remember the first time I inquired about this particular adapter, I got a bunch of 'good luck's and that Realtek is know to have poor support under numerous Linux distributions
<Sabotender>
and they were even trying to get me to return the adapter and get one with a different chipset
<Sabotender>
this driver that I am using works. and its apparently rare for a Linux driver to offer concurrent mode support, in addition to AP mode managed
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> Armbian has significantly better support for wireless dongles then any other Linux out there. But this is wide area and we are killing problems with zero budget
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> vendor made a driver and throws tar.gz to the wild ... and forget about
<Sabotender>
I agree that its not easy to expand support under a limited budget, the most I can do is inform interested parties of my success stories, and I can guarantee that neither of the major Linux distributions provide support for this particular adapter, and if there were 'support' it was horrendously broken with partial support, and it makes one wonder why even include that in with the kernel
<Armbian-Discord>
<Jason123> The github page has links to in kernel devices and out of kernel devices

the primary reason why I am asking so much in the Armbian channel is because I believe that it will absolutely rise above all those other distros I've tried in the past and offer a brilliant out of the box experience. Also, tethering support should be included as well, for Android and iPhones, because not everyone has access to LAN connections initially, and its nothering to include usbmux with the distro
<Sabotender>
not out of the box, which is my primary focus here
<Sabotender>
these distros assume that you have access to an ethernet LAN connection just because the port exists on your hardware, and thus you 'd need to install tethering libs via an internet connection which you never had to begin with
<Sabotender>
this is something that they seem to fail to understand
<Sabotender>
I tried four distros and only one had usbmux and other tethering libs included with the distro image which was flased to microSD

<Sabotender>
i believe that alternate methods to connect to the internet should be offered out of the box in an embedded environment, but on other platforms as well. . People making assumptions is what got me in this situation in the first place. trying to download a driver to compile from git with no access to the interet except via tethering , which was not available in the distro
<Sabotender>
it was a..what's the word? catch-22?
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> Sabotender: in embedded you buy hardware and make your own linux
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> Sabotender: you have te remember... embedded devices are specialzed purpose built... they are not intended to be all purpose general hardware like PCs..
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> er specialized
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> There's a lot more customization and unique tuning that needs/should be done to make each design be designed properly.
<Sabotender>
that' doesn't make sense
<Sabotender>
'special purpose'
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> oh, it makes sense
<Sabotender>
my odroid is operating under a special purpose, which required an internet connection to install libs to make this 'special purpose' work
<Sabotender>
but fine. I am done arguing. my point isn't hitting home and I wo't bring it up again
<Sabotender>
download the driver and compile it for use with my own success. I would have preferred to use Armbain, but it seems like a lost cause atm.
<Sabotender>
I wish the Armbian project good luck and scuccess, if you decide to support my hardware in your kernel and other out of the box libs, let me know, I am always on this network in other channels,I've just asked about this specific adapter several times with no update here, and I've just received pushback. and just so you know, the original Hardkernel image for my odroid offers out of the box support for tethering , which is how I was able to
