<Sabotender>
yay, this channel is a thing! 💃
<Sabotender>
I am trying to compile these drivers for my wireless adapter because the included driver is broken for AP mode which is frustrating. I can enable AP mode but there is no broadcast SSID. These drivers seem to have better support for that mode and it enable concurrent mode for a single adapter. but I m getting compile errors listed here: https://bpa.st/7MPQ
<Sabotender>
trying to install the headers using this general method did not work because they were not found: d : apt install -y linux-headers-$(uname -r) b
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> @<Sabotender> do a ls -l /lib/modules/uname -r/build/drivers/net/wireless/rtl88x2bu
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> does actually no that won't work "yet"
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> just do
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> ls -l /lib/modules/uname -r/build/
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> doh it cut off text
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> the uname -r should have ` around it
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> do you have an actual build area installed for your kernel?
<Sabotender>
oh, okay, I'm a Linux novice so please give me a moment to process this
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> I'm running that module/ethernet dongle now
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> Its nice
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> I have a few of those
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> I use theTP-Link Archer T3U
<Sabotender>
ethernet? this is a wireless adapter, usb. ethernet is impossible in my current situation, unfortunately
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> I just mean in general
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> I know its wifi
<Sabotender>
that gives e invalid option
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> What does?
<Sabotender>
were you wanting me to type several commands?
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> no
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> "one" command
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> discord messes up formatting though so let me pastebin it
<Armbian-Discord>
<c0rnelius> try make ARCH=arm -j8
<Sabotender>
yes, my odroid is arm7
<Sabotender>
which I've been told, 32-bit, lol
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> yep
<Armbian-Discord>
<c0rnelius> for a 32bit board its pretty nice.
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> Most Odroids are
<Sabotender>
I think maybe I need to configure it somehow, but I really don't know what to do beyond just make and make install.
<archetech>
just get a cornelius build
<Sabotender>
I don't know what that is or what it offers
<Sabotender>
I just want a working wireless adapter driver that will make my adapter correctly broadcast a SSID in ap mode
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> That's actually a lot tougher in Linux than you might think
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> Most Wlan drivers won't do that in AP mode
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> Some will... but its a very small list last I saw
<Sabotender>
the driver I am trying to compile seems to have high compatibility for my adapter and can operate in concurrent mode, which is really nice
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> Yep verified the 88x2bu chipset should work in AP mode too
archetech has quit [Quit: Konversation terminated!]
jock has quit [Quit: Leaving]
<Sabotender>
this is really odd because the driver that was included with the Armbian image does not operate correctly in AP mode. I can enable the mode but no broadcast SSID. this has happened to me several times with multiple drivers so you are correct that it is apprently not an easy thing to get working
<Sabotender>
I think I am just missing the headers or maybe point dkms to the correct directory where it would be looking normally during compilation

how do i upgrade my rock5 jammy to 5.10.100
<archetech>
kern 5.10.110
<Herc>
you could try armbian-config>system>other (kernel)
<Herc>
(altho apt update && apt upgrade should do it)
<Herc>
&& rebbot ofc
<archetech>
not listed
<Herc>
*reboot
<Sabotender>
I did that first with the guide
<Herc>
igorpec or lanefu should be able to help (I'm just a user)
<Sabotender>
the apt-update
<Herc>
armbian-config has many options here (for odroidc2, bullseye)
<Sabotender>
armbian config?
<Herc>
yup, with "-"
califax has quit [Ping timeout: 255 seconds]
<Herc>
armbian-config>system>other (kernel)
<Herc>
CLI "configuration utility"
<Herc>
must be run as root I think
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> @IgorPec is linux-5.10-gen-rkr3.4 being built in anything standalone yet that can be updated that way? or just in the Jammy CLI rolling release image?
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> @archetech Otherwise the newest version you are going to get is going to be around 5.10.72
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> unless you build it yourself
<archetech>
wrong I swithed to nighlty in armb-config then its listed ;)

* Herc
is on 5.19.17-meson64 #22.11.1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Nov 30 11:05:42 UTC 2022 aarch64 here (using "stable" on an odroidc2)
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> nightly is untest/unstable... aka rolling release
<archetech>
see if it worked
<archetech>
yes its brand new kernel build afaik

<Simon Bone> Sorry for a noob question... has the voice chat started?
<Armbian-Discord>
<TheBug> Yes you should select loung from channel options
<Armbian-Discord>
<Simon Bone> I couldn't see a link - the status just says 'starting soon for me'
<Armbian-Discord>
<TheBug> and it will prompt to join audio
alekksander has quit [Quit: Konversation terminated!]
<Armbian-Discord>
<Simon Bone> thanks
<Sabotender>
I think I am going to use a message board for continued assistance because I really don't know what I am doing and I am used to things just working. I only know how to make and make install and that's it. I followed the guide and it expelled errors. I really wih that the driver included with the kernel ws more compatible and not as broken as it is.
<Sabotender>
I dont' think I am asking for much. I just want my wireless adapter to operate properly as an access point
<Sabotender>
I am not sure if I should reflash my microsd card with a fresh copy of armbian just so I can start over

<c0rnelius>
archetech: I've only seen that when using ifupdown instead of NM or Netplan on Ubuntu Jammy.
<Sabotender>
I have a fresh copy installed, which is nice, but one thing I am really concerned about is installing the correct heaers
<c0rnelius>
the bug will also prevent you from being able to set a static ip and it messes with resolv. Its a real shit bug.
<Sabotender>
i've installed build-essential
<c0rnelius>
if you have the headers available too you, install `sudo apt install build-essential bc kmod cpio flex libncurses5-dev libelf-dev libssl-dev bison` and build the wifi module you want to use.
<Sabotender>
I dont have them yet because I'm not even sure the ones I was using previously were the correct ones
<Sabotender>
it kept giving me 'cross-compiling' messages
<Sabotender>
which doesn't make sense when I want to build for the system that is building
<Sabotender>
I really need to avoid that
<Sabotender>
the cross compiling messages
<Sabotender>
I am just speculating, but that might have been the source of my woes
<Sabotender>
This has never worked to get the correct headers: sudo apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -r)
<Sabotender>
that is supposed to work imo
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> why do you think that should work?
<Sabotender>
its supposed to get the kernel headers, correct?
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> do you have the appropriate src lines in your sources lists from where that kernel originated?
<Sabotender>
for the current kernel that is in use by the system?
<Armbian-Discord>
<c0rnelius> you sometimes need to be specific when compiling module from a github. such make ARCH=arm for v7l
<Sabotender>
shouldn't I be specific for my system?
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> modules and kernel sources are very specific to the build... not to "generic" instructions in a lot of case... using params like @c0rnelius mentions is needed for example
<Sabotender>
or are you saying that I just need the headers for arm-32 in general?
<Armbian-Discord>
<c0rnelius> well you need the headers, yes. no way around that. I'm saying once you have those don't just run make be more specific. make ARCH=arm
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tenkawa> indeed
<Sabotender>
or armfh or whateer they call it for 32 bit architectures
<Sabotender>
which headers should I download?
<Sabotender>
apt-get install kernel-headers somtimes works
