<ReThan> hello
<ReThan> can anyone assist me with fixing the time drift issue, my pine64 LTS boards are drifting to year 2117, i need to reboot the device for it to correct itself.
<ReThan> i am using an old kernel though as it was developed few years ago
<ReThan> i either want to try and update the boards remotely, or start new with a new image that has the fix
<ReThan> Linux pine64so 4.19.59-sunxi64 #5.91 SMP Mon Jul 15 17:04:46 CEST 2019 aarch64 GNU/Linux
<ReThan> If i install the latest KErnel through armbian-config, teh system reboots but seems it's broken, lots of errors etc
<buZz> ReThan: install a NTP server?
<montjoie> ReThan: ntp is the solution to drift, but could you share the "lots of errors" ?
<ReThan> ok drift by 100 years
<ReThan> this the A64 chips issue
<buZz> any drift, yeah
<stevieh> lol :-)
<buZz> ReThan: do you have the 'lots of errors' on a page to see?
<stevieh> I mean, why should somebody care, that between the few seconds of ntp sync, there could be a local drift of some hours :-)
<buZz> i'm not really seeing any reports of clock drift for all A64s? havent really heard of it before either
<ReThan> no, my LTS boards are drifting to year 2117
<buZz> never to 2118?
<ReThan> :O
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> i think this drifting was some time ago, but that build doesn't receive updates anymore
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> #5.91
<buZz> imho, just install NTP and configure it
<buZz> it'll solve any clock issues you're having
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> new images doesn't have this problem i think
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> @rethan check this post https://forum.armbian.com/topic/12210-armbian-1911y-release-notes/
<ArmbianHelper> ^ Armbian 19.11.y release notes - Announcements - armbian forum
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> package names changes, so upgrade from there is manual, then it goes
<buZz> ReThan: might be useful to realize, SBCs are very affected by accuracy/quality of powersupplies used
<ArmbianHelper> ^ A64 date/time clock issue - Page 4 - Development - armbian forum
<buZz> some of the pine64 boards have extra battery position for a RTC battery
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> buzz: here (A64) we had some bug
<ReThan> i have RTC batteries
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> regardless of batteries
<ReThan> yeah
<buZz> yeah i'm reading it wont really fix much
BCMM has joined #armbian
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> upgrading to latest kernel should fix
<buZz> ah its not a drift at all?
<buZz> > This manifests as a date jumping randomly in the future, for example around the year 2114.
<ReThan> thanks Igor, so can you please point me in some diretion as to where i can download an Armbian version for the LTS board that has this fix?
<buZz> hahaha! thats even a ~5 year old post
<buZz> so 2119 would be aligned :P
<ReThan> yeah i called it a drift issue :p
<ArmbianHelper> ^ clocksource/drivers/arch_timer: Workaround for Allwinner A64 timer in… · torvalds/linux@c950ca8 · GitHub
<buZz> so likely just fixed in modern kernel
<buZz> did you post the 'lots of errors' somewhere yet?
<ReThan> busy getting it:)
<buZz> \o/
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> https://www.armbian.com/download/ -> type "Pine " into search
<buZz> imho, remote kernel upgrades dont often work well :)

<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> upgrading from a very old build might fail 😉
<ReThan> sopine / LTS boards has this latest version to download: Armbian_21.08.1_Pine64so_focal_current_5.10.60...> 26-Dec-2021 15:43
<ReThan> does that have the fox?
<ReThan> fix?
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> that should do, yes
<ReThan> so it is best to upgrade from old kernels version by veersion?
<buZz> supposedly 5.4 and up
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> i think fix is in for aqhile
<buZz> hm? i wouldnt update -just- the kernel
<ReThan> this is good news
<ReThan> i dont know how to update just kernel
<ReThan> :(
<buZz> ok thats good :P
<ReThan> not good :(
<buZz> oh
<buZz> eh?
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> apt update 🙂 but those very older images doesn't update anymore
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> at least not that way
<buZz> which armbian are you running now?
<ReThan> apt update or upgrade does not update kernel
<buZz> indeed
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> " Linux pine64so 4.19.59-sunxi64 #5.91 "
<buZz> there's likely no newer kernel for your current armbian version
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> this is very old build
<buZz> try cat /etc/os-release
<ReThan> Linux pine64so 4.19.59-sunxi64 #5.91 SMP Mon Jul 15 17:04:46 CEST 2019 aarch64 GNU/Linux
<ReThan> hmmm
<buZz> thats the kernel yeah, whats the armbian version?
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> no, the problem is branch name "next" "default" which were dropped in 2019
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> armbian version si 5.91
<ReThan> yup
<buZz> my workstation comes with ;
<buZz> $ cat /etc/os-release
<buZz> PRETTY_NAME="Devuan GNU/Linux 3 (beowulf)"
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> we changed naming
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> in 2019
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> -> v2019.11 was first "modern"
<ReThan> so this explains the armbian-config kernel upgrade thats making my system break
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> yes
<ReThan> ok
<ReThan> what can i do xD
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> best is to start with a clean image, the one you found is ok
<ReThan> im stressing :O
<ReThan> ok is that best
<ReThan> then just swap out the emmc modules
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> but there is another problem. we don't have an official maintainer for this hw anymore
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> so status is pretty much unknown. i suggest you to freeze kernel upgrades to prevent stress
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> in armbian-config
<ReThan> alright i see
<ReThan> we chose the LTS boards because of the emmc module back in the day
<ReThan> maybe it's time to change to sometihng else
<buZz> A64 is kinda old-ish
<ReThan> heh
<buZz> H3 perhaps? if you wanna stick to allwinner
<buZz> not a whole lot newer, but some
<ReThan> i will need to move to something that is supported better
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> h3 is even older, its 32b
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> oldish goldish 😉 well, if it works for the purpose, keep it
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> supported better?
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> this is very well supported. most new stuff breaks a lot
<ReThan> with better Armbian support, a maintainer
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> this is related with interest and expenses
<ReThan> yes :<
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> a64 hw is generally well supported, we support other a64 boards
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> and this sopine is not much different then others
<ReThan> which version should i use? Buster? focal? Bullseye?
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> 99% of troubles are related
<ReThan> or does it not mattter
<ReThan> oh ok i see
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> hw support wise this does not matter
<ReThan> i don't need a DE
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> focal is somehow best stable on userland
<ReThan> awesome cool
<ReThan> so ill start from scratch
<ReThan> thakns for the support
<ReThan> if i cannot download using torrents, where else can i get an image

<ReThan> Armbian_21.08.1_Pine64so_focal_current_5.10.60...> 26-Aug-2021 10:56 <-- should this be fine?
<IgorPec> yes
<ReThan> cool thanks
<IgorPec> u welcome
<ReThan> are there any workarounds whilst i create this from scratch?
<ReThan> force something in cron or something?
<ReThan> why does the time corret itself when it reboots? Can i run something every minute?

<FergusL> Hello there. I got a second hand C2. Tried 3 different cards, I always get sdcard related error on uart console. Can I just consider the sd slot in the device itself is damaged? :/
<FergusL> in uboot "=> mmc info 1" -> "Card did not respond to voltage select!"
<FergusL> on uboot 2022.01-armbian
<IgorPec> does it boot or stop booting? C2 is known for picky sd cards. Try some older builds perhaps
<IgorPec> ReThan: don't know for a workaround. check those forum links, there were lots of talking on this problem

<buZz> FergusL: you might want to try a small card , something 4GB perhaps
<buZz> or smaller
<buZz> (to make sure its not SDXC related)
<FergusL> IgorPec it doesn't boot at all, it ignores sd and emmc and goes to pxe boot. I'll try older builds
<FergusL> I've got half a dozen sd cards in front of me: most are dead :D
<buZz> RIP
<buZz> i can honestly say in all my life i have just killed one SD card
<buZz> and it was a microSD that broke in two while half ejected from a device in my ba
<buZz> g
<buZz> backpack*
<IgorPec> i kill a dosent of sd cards, well but we do a lot of testings
<buZz> i cant say i dont use SD cards a lot :P
<buZz> my first flashcart was a 32MB smartmedia back in the day that flash costed more than hdds :P
<buZz> think i paid as much for that card as the 32MB mp3player it went into
<buZz> ~300 euro
<IgorPec> i have 8Mb somewhere ;)
<buZz> nice :D
<buZz> smartmedia?
<buZz> that stuff is raaaaaaaaaaare
<IgorPec> don't know, let see if i can find it
<FergusL> what's weird is that I reflashed the desktop version and it did boot into the kernel once (flashing blue heartbeat), but couldn't reproduce... I wonder if the sd slot is damaged or a little loose
<IgorPec> not where its expected to be :(
<IgorPec> sdcard can be partially damanged, yes
<buZz> FergusL: the slots have tiny fingers inside that push against the card
<buZz> maybe you bent one or two away from the card?
<FergusL> buZz yeah I was suspecting that and just checked, seems fine I could see and count the pins
<buZz> ok, well
<buZz> and you arent using those SD-microSD convertors?
<buZz> many of -those- seem to die in my hands :P
<FergusL> no, sdcard straight in the slot
<FergusL> I don't have a reliable setup yet, so still checking the actual culprit
<FergusL> I put a piece of paper on top of the card in the slot to force it harder onto the pins
<FergusL> I now got passed "Loading init ramdisk..." and at the moment "Starting kernel"
<FergusL> and then nothing, but I'm sure if I unplug and replug the board I won't get the same step for mystical reasons
<buZz> FergusL: sounds kinda good
<buZz> FergusL: are you measuring the output of your powersupply during usage?
<buZz> it might be dropping voltage a bit too much
<FergusL> can the C2 be powered on the headers? Like on the Pine64
<FergusL> buZz no I'm not, tried 2 different supplies, one is rated 3A the other 2.1A
<buZz> i have no idea about either
<buZz> you could measure the +5V on the pins though, and see if it drops during usage
<FergusL> ha good idea, I'll try to do that later
<FergusL> I'd suspect the sd card too as you said the c2 is picky
<buZz> yeah i didnt, but yeah
<buZz> i have no experience with c2 specifically, all SBCs seem very picky about power :)
<FergusL> sure too yes!

<FergusL> the dc jack barel on C2 is so tiny I can't see why it would be better than the mirco usb
<FergusL> only used power over usb so far I don't have such a niny barel around here
<buZz> PSP powersupply has a very small pin aswell
