Morning. Pinebook Pro boots fine from SD on all version, but when installed on eMMC, Armbian 21.08 boots fine and 22.02 doesn't (laptop is soft bricked).
<yth>
Reproducible, tried both several times. If I install 21.08 (which works) then update u-boot with armbian-config it also soft bricks.
<yth>
Something changed in u-boot? It's weird that both work on SD but only one works on eMMC...
<IgorPec>
board maintaner has to get this - he can file a bug
<IgorPec>
or perhaps he knows what is the problem. i dont' know
<yth>
Thanks. Can't find mentioned on forums. Correct etiquette to report through armbian.com/bugs google form?
<IgorPec>
yes

<xiaoji> After a little research on rk3588, the performance seems to be sufficient, it can reach 2.4GHz, and it also supports uefi, but the support for pice is still insufficient. It is expected that Rockchip's next-generation chips can truly achieve desktop level.
<Armbian-Discord>
<xiaoji> At present, the price of a mini-ATX PC of rk3588 is about 850 US dollars excluding tax and postage. Available in China.

<Tonymac32> Wait a minute, I can't make tinker 2 boot eMMC either. 👀🤔
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tonymac32> I thought it was tinker 2 fault.....
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tonymac32> Yth do you have a dmesg by chance?
<c0rnelius>
which version of u-boot you using?
<c0rnelius>
2021.10 eMMC boot on RK3399 is broke last time I checked. Was fixed in 2022.01.

<yth>
Tonymac32: in fact, playing a bit more I can't make the PBPro boot from SD on 22.02 either - when it was working before it was trampolining to SD from an older u-boot still on the eMMC, of course.
<yth>
So looks to me like u-boot may just be broken for RK3399 in 22.02
<yth>
(or at least the RK3399 on my PB Pro and your Tinker 2)
<tonymac32>
I lose the boot at the handoff to the kernel in 22.02
<tonymac32>
using the old u-boot I get crazy dmesg spam about I/O errors
<yth>
I've no UART currently for the PB Pro, so I don't know where it fails, but I'd assume same
<tonymac32>
ok
<yth>
Don't remember seeing anything untoward in dmesg - not quick to retest as I have to take it apart to un-soft-brick the eMMC each time
<yth>
I think I recall the eMMC just ... vanishing from the bus, it looked like ... half way through my first try at updating from 22.02 after a trampoline boot off SD, though. Might be misremembering the detail.
<yth>
(which does sound in the same family as IO errors!)
<Armbian-Discord>
<Tonymac32> Hmmm

As an experiment, just took a clean 21.08.3 image, did a full apt update, then updated u-boot via armbian-config - same result, unbootable.
<yth>
Last thing before the u-boot update (i.e. after the kernel update) was still booting fine, so guess u-boot is the culprit
