<Armbian-Discord> <rpardini> nekomancer: yeah probably a Makefile conflict, those creep up a lot. That should be an overlay but I was lazy. I doubt anyone uses any of that stuff though, you all seem obsessed with the eMMC 😉
* nekomancer[m] not
* nekomancer[m] * not obsessed with the eMMC
<Armbian-Discord> <rpardini> since i'm eMMC-less SPI can have all the pins it wants
<Armbian-Discord> <rpardini> but yeah one day I'll learn overlays and push it upstream
<Armbian-Discord> <rpardini> I've a batch for HC4 too, gotta get shit together

<c0rnelius> I just started playing with overlays. they are kind of fun.
<rapha> sunshavi: these are actually available, thank you!
<lanefu> c0rnelius: just cuz I'm a sucker doesn't mean I'm a sucker
<c0rnelius> well. it was worth a try.
<lanefu> Let me scroll back for an hour and see what it is lol
<lanefu> c0rnelius: gonna stick my rxxdx rxxcx 5 pre-orders for now
<c0rnelius> lanefu: whats that?
<Armbian-Discord> <lanefu> Rk3588 board from another vendor
<c0rnelius> oh alright I thinks I got it
<c0rnelius> did a quick google search and figured it out
<lanefu> Lol impressive on google
<c0rnelius> well I did put 2 and 2 together but, yes. good job google.

<c0rnelius> A lot of people pre-ordered that it seems. I still want to be disappointed by the Zero2, so I'm holding out.
norwich has joined #armbian
<Armbian-Discord> <lanefu> What would you use zero2 for
<c0rnelius> Honestly not really sure yet. I just wanna play with it mostly. The thought of that many cores in that form factor intrigues me.
<Armbian-Discord> <Tonymac32> I love the idea of the zero 2, but I'm not sure what that much power would be used for in that tiny package.
<c0rnelius> If its not unstable I was gonna see how it performs as a native buildbox for a while.
<c0rnelius> Been using the zero currently as a kodi box replacement for my Le Potato and the other one I got as a test unit.
<c0rnelius> The built in wifi and BT I really like.
<Armbian-Discord> <Tonymac32> right

<PeloPelo> I installed armbian bionic
<PeloPelo> And activated the spi
<PeloPelo> And /dev/spi* file was created
<PeloPelo> But after a sudo apt update and sudo apt upgrade (i think because of latest armbian-firmwares) it deleted /dev/spi* file
<PeloPelo> And it gone forever :'(
<PeloPelo> Nobody going to say anything about this??

<Manouchehri> question, for a cheap ish high perf dual gigabit (or 10G) SBC, is the latest and greatest still just the NanoPi R4S?
<Armbian-Discord> <Werner> If best matured software is a criteria then yes
<Armbian-Discord> <Werner> No idea about newer socs
<Manouchehri> I have one of these at the post office I need to pick up, but it seems like the ZimaBoard 216 might be a better bang for buck (I know it's not ARM though). https://shop.zimaboard.com/products/zimaboard-single-board-server-for-creators-8g-32gb-linux-windows-openwrt-pfsense-andorid-libreelec-development-board-low-cost-hackable-single-board-server?variant=39283928400070
<Manouchehri> awwwww I just noticed they're realtek nics, not intel
PeloPelo has left #armbian [#armbian]
<buZz> Manouchehri: maybe the quartzpro64 ? RK3588 seems to have dual gbps
<buZz> oh , cheap was a requirement, doubt it'll be ;)
<Manouchehri> <$200 is what I was looking at
<buZz> its not buyable yet
<Manouchehri> oh wow north of $300 for the quartzpro64.
<Manouchehri> yeaaah
<rapha> sunshavi: IgorPec: so, it turned out the existing rtl8something-based usb wifi stick was working fine and the old odroids were working fine, too. but the usb stick only does 2.4GHz and the wifi router's 2.4GHz radio keeps crashing - which i never knew about because all my other devices use 5GHz. knowing this, and with a different wifi AP, i tried various images for the c1+/c0 boards again and have found that
<rapha> all images (whether it be Ubuntu or Armbian or Alarm) which use the original 3.7.something kernel, work just fine and have all the hardware working.
<rapha> also @ buZz :)
<buZz> rapha: ahhhhhhhh o/
<rapha> \o
<buZz> :)
<buZz> i upgraded my wifi AP here recently
<rapha> also, buZz, i have a dutch coworker now. is there anything funny i could tell her?
<buZz> from a routerboard RB433 to a HAP AC²
<buZz> pretty cheap
* rapha googles both
<sunshavi> cool
<Manouchehri> oh this reminds me of an on-topic question, is there a reason why livepatching hasn't become a thing on aarch64 yet? :) I see it's in the pipeline. https://www.spinics.net/lists/arm-kernel/msg899789.html
<rapha> sunshavi: i'll still get one of those atheros sticks, just in case
<Manouchehri> rapha: In America, riding your bike to work is a life or death situation daily.
<buZz> Manouchehri: yeah, barely any bikelanes
<rapha> Manouchehri: saddens me to hear so, but how did we get from linux distros to bikes?
<buZz> and the ones that exist dont seperate traffic
<Manouchehri> rapha: you wanted a joke to tell your dutch coworker :p
<rapha> oh
<rapha> well i'm German
<rapha> and she doesn't ride a bike, strangely
<Manouchehri> oooooh, now i see why you needed help with humour.
<rapha> hahahahah
<rapha> THAT was a good one right there!
<sunshavi> rapha: Yes. They are pretty fine. specially as they let You start host mode for hostapd
<buZz> :P
<rapha> buZz: okay, let's try like this: what's your favorite Dutch joke that's also short enough to be memorized?
<sunshavi> or for working as a repeater
<sunshavi> s/repeater/wifi repeater/
<ArmbianHelper> sunshavi meant to say: or for working as a wifi repeater
<buZz> rapha: lol i'm not one for memorizing jokes
<buZz> i have one, its not dutch
<buZz> > whats the diff between US and yogurt
<rapha> buZz: also, that RB433 doesn't look like it has wifi built-in. more akin to the APU2c4 which we use as a router for the whole house, but with separate APs.
<buZz> < yogurt can grow a culture
<rapha> rofl
* rapha looks at Manouchehri to see how they'll react
<buZz> rapha: yeah, RB433 has 3x mini-pci slots for wifi cards, its pretty old
<buZz> but worked well
<buZz> HAP AC² has a 2.4ghz and a 5ghz radio
ikmaak has joined #armbian
<Manouchehri> rapha: I don't expect my yogurt to ever be radioactive.
<rapha> wait
<rapha> i understood buZz's joke
<rapha> but i don't understand the radioactivity thing
<rapha> is that again because i'm German?
<Manouchehri> it's a nuclear war joke.
<Manouchehri> does armbian support any old 2.6.32 devices? I discovered cloudlinux has been backporting some security fixes. https://repo.cloudlinux.com/cloudlinux/6/updates/SRPMS/
<buZz> whats a 2.6 kernel device?
<buZz> i mean, why would any device be stuck on such a old kernel?
<Manouchehri> pretty common to see in IoT still
<buZz> i havent :)
<buZz> Manouchehri: i dont think thats because of the -device- but just a bad manufacturer
<Manouchehri> correct
sunshavi has quit [Ping timeout: 252 seconds]
<buZz> so, why would armbian have to comply to being bad :P
<buZz> or what would benefit be
<buZz> :D
<rapha> Manouchehri: my 3.7 kernel devices are definitely not supported anymore and as i learned yesterday it's better to tread carefully when asking about them
<Manouchehri> rapha: what 3.7 kernel devices do you have?
sunshavi has joined #armbian
<rapha> Manouchehri: hardkernel odroid c0 and c1+
<Manouchehri> oh man that brings me back to college
<rapha> huh, you used hardkernel devices there?
<Manouchehri> I was trying to convince the robotics team to switch to a custom platform for a drone competition.
<Manouchehri> they didn't want to do anything but pad their resume, I quit and they went with stock DJI stuff :p
<rapha> lol
<rapha> wait, DJI drones have SBC's in them?
<Manouchehri> yeah, they're a hacked up android device
<rapha> funky
<rapha> but definitely not fun to do something custom with
<Manouchehri> oh no, that's why I was proposing ditching DJI completely.
<buZz> 5.8 seems to have amlogic s805 support , rapha
<rapha> i recently began getting into building R/C planes ... LoS only for now, but first FC is in the mail now and i want to start playing around with Ardupilot and eventually go FPV and GPS-waypoint-flying.
<rapha> buZz: yeah, there's even images with 5.10.x (Armbian and others, but the Armbian ones seem to be the best), but the devil is in the details. like for example, with a USB wifi stick and a CH340 plugged in, the rtl8something module will start spewing cryptic error messages and the load will go through the roof until you unplug the CH340.
<buZz> rapha: maybe ask around in #linux-amlogic then?
<rapha> i already did, quite a while back
<rapha> they think it feasible to get current mainline off of kernel.org working fully ... but it needs the work put in. and i'm many things but certainly no C and most definitely no systems programmer.
<buZz> hehe, yeah that webpage seems like they're on top of it
<rapha> for the 3D printer (that's the c0, for size reasons) i'm perfectly content with the 3.7 kernel. for the two c1+, i'll just keep them around and try getting mainline working every couple of months when i feel like it.
<buZz> :) i'm not really sure whats running on my printer
<buZz> 4.19 it seems

<rapha> hey 4.19 isn't too shabby
<rapha> and i thought that sunxi devices are notorious for their bad vendor support?
<rapha> buZz: where did you buy the ac² from?
<buZz> eh, hmm
<buZz> maybe from them directly?
<buZz> ah no, i bought it at azerty.nl
<buZz> Product: MikroTik hAP ac2 - Draadloos toegangspunt
<buZz> Stukprijs: € 66,55
<rapha> ah ok, so similar price to the various places in germany
<rapha> dank je wel
<rapha> seriously considering moving the entire house to these
<rapha> we'd need 7
<rapha> will have to talk to the other tenants
<buZz> at the hackerspace we have Aruba APs
<buZz> very nice, but very expensive
<buZz> they can do proper roaming and handover of clients
<rapha> oh
<buZz> >500 euro per AP
<rapha> we've been doing that with old TPLink APs running OpenWRT so far
<rapha> like, dumb APs, all on the same SSID, no routing
<rapha> but i very much doubt there was any "proper" handover over clients going on
<buZz> :) yeah but that wont survive a SSH session
<rapha> well ... an 8-apartments-house is not a hackerspace, usually :P
<rapha> what some people _do_ do is watch a youtube video on their way from the garden to the 4th floor, or whatever, and that _does_ work
<buZz> ;)
<buZz> our hackerspace has just ..6 rooms?
<buZz> 3 APs covers it well
<rapha> does speak for the APs tho
