cr1901 changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. Desoldering that rom chip without hot air is going to be difficult :p
<KitsuWhooa>
And I still need to find that ess card that's hiding somewhere
<KitsuWhooa>
Apparently I don't have an adapter for the package either. Dumping this is going to be a pain :p

<whitequark>
i used a blowtorch a few times
<whitequark>
if you're careful, it's non-destructive
<tunixman>
The culinary ones can be turned way down. They're really common for working on the pads for woodwinds and solder for smaller brass instruments.
<KitsuWhooa>
Hmmm :p
<tunixman>
Just clean the tubes out because burning biogunk inside smells pretty bad.
<qu1j0t3>
tunixman: jeez, now you're tempting me to get a blowtorch, i hate desoldering without one.
<qu1j0t3>
or without hot air, rather.
<tunixman>
yeah get one. you can even do it with an alcohol lamp for more control.
<tunixman>
of course I'm a fan of high heat with a small flame to get it over with until I ruin something.

My CMI-6426S appears to possibly be on its way out... or needs its low-level format refreshed.

Will buy yours if you still have it :P
<madeline>
aw :(
<madeline>
not easily accessible, sorry
<cr1901>
Ahh, no worries
<cr1901>
Well, it's going to die eventually, but it'll die under my care. Would like to get it to 40 years, because that would be awesome. So I may just back up everything, do destructive analysis and reformat
<cr1901>
Not bad for a drive known as a notorious piece of shit I think :)

<ZrX-NoMs>
I'd dump the tracks with a scope and reconstruct what's needed.
<cr1901>
I don't have a scope
<cr1901>
costs money I don
<cr1901>
t have
<cr1901>
Wonder what ADC philpem used to save that floppy scarybeasts was trying to dump
<ZrX-NoMs>
Ah, your drive.
<andlabs>
wait how do you dump tracks with a scope????
<andlabs>
are you probing the communication pins or the platter directly???
<cr1901>
find where the signal exits the inside of the hard drive and probe there
<Foone>
I believe they were capturing from the head. so bypassing the ADC
<cr1901>
so probe something before the signal is conditioned

<andlabs>
OK
<ZrX-NoMs>
20 meg drive so I assume it to be the old MFM or RLL Winchester type where you have the head differential output on the cable directly.
<cr1901>
yes
<cr1901>
I don't actually know the read clock speed for MFM drives, so I'm looking at old datasheets
<ZrX-NoMs>
5 MHz for MFM and 8 MHz for RLL iirc.
<cr1901>
(also: to be clear, I don't actually care about the data on these sectors. I've confirmed from the FAT that I don't care about the file those two clusters are associated with)
<cr1901>
I just want to reformat them without having to "start over", because I don't know a sunk cost when I see one
<ZrX-NoMs>
Got one 30 meg drive here that needs to be recovered. 2 platters, 4 heads. One head has somehow gotten ripped off and some scratches on the platter from the head arm.
<cr1901>
I don't see how you're gonna recover the head that was ripped off
<cr1901>
Unless you intend to perform microsurgery and hope for the best w/ slight misalignment
<ZrX-NoMs>
I plan to read the data from heads 3 & 4, then dismantle the motor assembly to swap the platters and use heads 3 & 4 to read the other platter.
<andlabs>
my google-fu is failing me
<andlabs>
are there **any** sort of documentation **at all** about the gateway handbook **ORIGINAL 286 VERSION**
<andlabs>
I found exactly one (1) page that's only accessible on archive.org about taking apart the later 486 version
<andlabs>
and a bunch of youtube videos showing it off
<andlabs>
but can only find info about servicing later gateway laptops
<cr1901>
maybe check bitsavers to see if they have a Gateway directory
<andlabs>
noe
<andlabs>
nope
<andlabs>
well I guess I can hope the hard drive is under this trap door I guess
<andlabs>
nope that's just a dock connector
<andlabs>
not sure why it's under a trap door but whatever
<andlabs>
I'll just power this on I guess; the seller didn't try for some reason despite including the power cord
<andlabs>
unless this is one of those computers that will not turn on unless a battery is present

nope it's actually the wrong power adapter entirely
<andlabs>
either for a different laptop or for this one's dock
<andlabs>
welp

I'll still take pictures of it and the libretto side by side but I can't actually use this thing for now :V

Pietro Gagliardi, [11.08.21 19:11] meanwhile today's arrival is a macintosh classic II that I got because no one else wanted it and it was $100 which is way less than they are going for now
<andlabs>
Pietro Gagliardi, [11.08.21 19:12] and ugh the ifixit tech toolkit's screwdriver, even with the "flexible" extension, is neither long enough nor firm enough to actually open the case screws
<andlabs>
Pietro Gagliardi, [11.08.21 19:12] so I may actually need to get a proper mac cracker lol
