<sad_plan>
https://novacustom.com/ this seems mildy interesting. reminds me of the framework, minus the modular IO
<sad_plan>
I though of you kris_ when I saw it
<kris_>
ive heard good things about novacustom
<kris_>
some of them have the intel ME disabled
<sad_plan>
yeah, techlore recently made a video about it
<sad_plan>
you can indeed, because of coreboot
<kris_>
yeah i intend on either corebooting or librebooting my t480 once i get it
<sad_plan>
its also *repairable*, like the framework laptop
<kris_>
libreboot is probably simpler though so we will see
<kris_>
and having grub baked into the firmware so i can *fully* encrypt my disk makes secure boot pointless
<kris_>
seems pretty neat
<sad_plan>
Im not sure I like libreboot. I get the whole libre deal, and I like that, but at what cost? in most cases, youre sacrificing security. atleast with the librekernel
<sad_plan>
nice
<kris_>
sacrificing security in what aspect?
<sad_plan>
more often than not, you need some proprietary stuff which fixes security issues. might not be much of an issue with the bios, but atleast in regards to the kernel, theyre just disregarding security for the sake of freedom
<kris_>
meh im not sure about the kernel but i don't run a deblobbed kernel
<kris_>
i mean i do but only for drivers my system doesn't need
<kris_>
as for the bios its a little less clear since libreboot obviously disables the intel ME and can give you a *fully* encrypted disk and make secure boot pointless
<kris_>
libreboot doesnt support uefi unless you use the uboot payload though
<sad_plan>
librekernel wont allow that. only libre stuff is allowed. Ive read an artichle about this, ill fetch the link if I can find it
<kris_>
which to some people is a good thing, i'm undecided on whether or not i'm a fan of bios
<kris_>
sad_plan yeah i experimented with it via gnu gux
<kris_>
i mean you can pull microcode with a libre kernel
<kris_>
if that's your concern
<kris_>
generally what you do is build it into your initramfs
<sad_plan>
I dont do initramfs. all builtin
<sad_plan>
it says it blocks it. not sure how exacly they do that.
<sad_plan>
it would be nice to have a blobfree kernel though. I like atleast having *some* security measures taken. so at the very least its no 0
<sad_plan>
s/no 0/not 0/
<kris_>
idk ive never done a initramfs-free install
<kris_>
i use tinyramfs on desktop types for decrypting my ssd, dracut on servers for the same reason but with dracut i can just ssh into my initramfs via the dropbear module
<kris_>
i haven't written a similar thing for tinyramfs yet
<sad_plan>
its much easier. you just compile the kernel, and youre done :p
<sad_plan>
ah dropbear, nice to see someone actually use it
<kris_>
just for my initramfs
<sad_plan>
right
<kris_>
idk we'll see, i got a pretty good deal on a t480
<kris_>
unfortunately it's the 8350u model and not the 8650u model but 130 usd isnt bad for a really good condition t480 with 32gb of ram and a screen upgrade already installed
<sad_plan>
I suppose not. I honestly dont get the whole deal about these thinkpads. theyre really old now :') one would think people would want modern hardware. I get that you buy hardware for w/e you wanna run. much like I do with getting a pixel phone for grapheneOS. might simply be the same thing
<kris_>
this is the absolute oldest one ill consider personally
<kris_>
8th gen intel, the cpu is 4c8t at least
<kris_>
its just nice because the battery life is insane, the external battery is *hotswappable* because it has an internal smaller one to keep the system alive while you do that, and the performance isnt awful
<kris_>
+ coreboot support
<sad_plan>
nice
<sad_plan>
my old desktop had a 7th gen iirc
<kris_>
currently running intels latest on my desktop
<kris_>
previously, 10700k
<sad_plan>
nice. I got a 7600 for my new desktop. im quite happy with that tbh
<kris_>
ryzen im guessing?
<sad_plan>
yeah
<kris_>
if it's working out for you then good shit
<kris_>
i dont think ill get another ryzen chip
<sad_plan>
for sure. the intels run a bit hot, and seeing as I have a 2.9L case, I cant really have things run really hot. although im kinda locked into 65W because of this
<kris_>
honestly the latest gen doesnt really run all that hot
<kris_>
you can get a 280w AIO for the 265k and it will work fine
<kris_>
280mm*
<kris_>
i dont have a visual for what 2.9L is though
<sad_plan>
perhaps not. nevertheless, its what I got, and it works all good for my usecase
<kris_>
ya is good
<sad_plan>
for reference, its a tad bit smaller than a ps4
<sad_plan>
still runs games in 4k, despite its small size. which is amazing
<kris_>
what gpu?

<sewn>
yippe
<sewn>
sad_plan: i wouldnt reccomend nova
<sewn>
personally i was going to go for a tongfeng laptop because it was so cheap compared to the competition and it was practically the same too
<sewn>
i think they were being sold laptopwithlinux.com or something similar
<sewn>
but i fixed my pc now so i dont think i need a laptop yet
<sad_plan>
I wasnt going to buy it anyway, I just wanted to throw it out there, because people might find it interesting.
<sad_plan>
and the nova laptops shouldnt be bought simply by the fact that tongfeng exists, and is more or less the same, just cheaper? or is there something else at play here?
<sad_plan>
the nova is quite expensive though, ill give them that..
