GordonDrogon: I ordered the same FPGA board but the seller (Love-Mi Store) was a scam. AliExpress refunded straightaway.
<gordonDrogon>
Hm. let me see...
<SpaceCoaster>
The offered US shipping but provided a tracking number for some else’s package. If you ordered from sipeed then you are good.
<gordonDrogon>
sipeed Store as far as I can tell...
<gordonDrogon>
so ought to be ok, just have to wait a few mor weeks...
<SpaceCoaster>
Good! Mine “arrived” in Florida overnight, some peoples packages arrived before they were ordered, slow and steady works.
<gordonDrogon>
says it was dispatched on Feb. 20th... it's on a slow ship ...
<SpaceCoaster>
The only time I had problems with an order was a package delivered to Lebanon, the country, instead of Lebanon, NH, my town. I think that is pretty understandable.
<SpaceCoaster>
So on probably a hundred orders I am down 1 USB cable that ended up in the Middle East.
<SpaceCoaster>
You know that you can compile and build all the FPGA stuff without the board?
<gordonDrogon>
Yes, I understand I can, however the past 2-3 weeks for me has been pretty full-on - away for nearly a week for a funeral then on a somewhat intensive training course (swimming instructor) then just feeling crap because I have the mother of all colds )-:
<SpaceCoaster>
Simulation is normally the first pass before using hardware. I prefer the blinky lights myself but the pros kill the bugs in simulation first.
<SpaceCoaster>
As a software guy there is something magical about adding some registers to a processor or a hardware device.
<SpaceCoaster>
I now more appreciate why device drivers for expansion boards were so full of kludges and delays.
<gordonDrogon>
I already have my RV code running on my 65816 board emulating it, but there seems to be space in the FPGA for at least a 6502 and/or a 65816 so that might be interesting when I get it going.
<SpaceCoaster>
I just added latching to a device register so that the processor couldn’t mess with it mid transfer.
<SpaceCoaster>
I can imagine back in the 80s I would have been putting in mystery delays to work around that.

<josuah>
what are you using as FPGA hardware and toolchain?
<josuah>
it seems like they go by pair: few hardware have an open source toolchain wroking for them
<gordonDrogon>
I plan to use the gowin stuff initially, then once I have it all working see what else is out there. it seems to run under Linux OK from what I can tell.

this is my current 'go to' for the device - it's fairly new, so not a lot online yet (and this is the 4K device, I have the 9K on order)
