<geist> usually i do the manul infinite loop trick
<geist> useful if you're just trying to see if it'll get to a particular point
k_hachig_ has joined #osdev
<zid> yea, at some level, you need some obvious sequencing.
<zid> on a top level that will be a stream of printfs, below that it might be something like a single character or two getting updated (bios post codes), then maybe a couple of beeps, then a singular beep/stall/whatever

<geist> re: the hard drive clicker. https://www.serdashop.com/HDDClicker
<bslsk05> www.serdashop.com: HDD Clicker - Serdashop
<geist> just ordered one
<geist> relies on a LED light, or some sort of thing that lights something like that, so that's pretty easy to work with
goliath has joined #osdev
<zid> I'd love a proper one, but a clicker is cool
<geist> yeah i think it's not exactly right, since it can't simulate the think seeking etc but i think the effect is fairly close
<zid> yea it just turns what would be the activity LED flashing, into clickies
<zid> rather than seek noises
<zid> if you wire it into the emulator itself you can have all that info, but if you're just inline then it's about the best you can do
<geist> yah i think i can even wire this up to a zuluscsi on a PDP-11 or mac classic or whatnot, since that has a LED out header
<geist> that's what i miss about moving the PDP off of a spinning drive (that ws sounding kinda sick so i assumed it'd die on me) to a faked out scsi
<geist> now it's silent and that loses a lot of the appeal of an old machine doing it's thinking
<geist> like if you have a slow 70s era machine that takes 15 seconds to start vi or whatnot, it's at least fullfilling to hear it seek and 'think'
<geist> otherwise it's just perfectly silent and a much less engaging situation
<zid> yea if it's silent you also get the worries about it having frozen
<zid> "Is this doing anything or...?"
