<kof673> i suspect also at some level it is the cost of having "rapid" hardware changes...or: why do cpu manufacturers not write books about how to implement locking for a serious business real os? > you don't want people to become specialists in some hardware that may be soon arcane
<kof673> at some level, it is a reflection of hardware being "fragmented" or "value-adding" (specializations, differences, "incompatibilities" etc.

<kof673> i hate to imply that supposed "competition" magically works out for everyone, but an "alternative" might be called "The mainframe model" : one manufacturer of hardware, also makes/sells the OS. > A novice asked the Master: "I perceive that one computer company is much larger than all others. It towers above its competition like a giant among dwarfs. Any one of its divisions could comprise an entire business. Why is this so?"

<xtex> is it possible to make xorriso quieter? its outputing the version line is noisy
<zid> never heard of it, have you considered using mkisofs?
<zid> or just.. hosting your own xorriso as part of your project and removing some pritnfs :P
<zid> it's not like anybody has it installed
<GeDaMo> xtex: try -quiet
<xtex> xorriso : FAILURE : Not a known command: '-quiet'
<xtex> GeDaMo:
<xtex> zid: nevertheless, xorriso is used by grub-mkrescue. I will try mkisofs

<kof673> this is just one random person, but re: "academia" ...his book talks about "reductionism" versus "holicism" and the future computing, internet bill of rights.... and then you see something like: https://brianwhitworth.com/6-14-universal-rights/ Today, states grant people rights <-- this is what he calls "delegation" -- which is fine, but that is 180 of the supposed u.s. model of "delegation" "the us and its states" what? lol

<kof673> i am not advocating or disadvocating anything...just confusion of tongues is eternal lol
<kof673> if you can't even discuss something without multiple meanings being secretly slipped in....good luck :D

<geist> grrr vepsa stalled out heading to work again today. has done it twice recently
<geist> does it and then runs fine after a bit, so probalby any number of issues with spark plugs or fuel system
<geist> at least it only stalled out like a mile from home, since it was easy to get it back
<GeDaMo> Was it raining?
<geist> no clear day. a little warmer than usual, but still fairly cool (about 20C)
<GeDaMo> I had a scooter which wouldn't run properly when it rained, there was something wrong with the spark plug connectors
<geist> it did it while it was more revved up, which also smells like some sort of fuel system, or some sort of vaccum on the tank, which is a known issue too
<geist> and yeah gonna check out the spark plug too
<geist> probably wouldn’t hurt to change it, probably original one
<geist> vaccum on the tank is easy to test for: run it until it stalls and thenquickly open the tank and see if there’s a suction on it
<geist> there’s a hose there that runs to the carb to either suck fuel fumes off, or maybe a back channel to let air back into the tank as it consumes fuel, but if that gets stuck up it’ll just pull a harder andharder vacuum on the tank until it cant get fuel anymore
<zid> it stalls but restarts fine?
<gorgonical> geist: this is why I prefer my shitty old bike
<gorgonical> Plus, I get to eat extra breakfast burritos as a result
<gorgonical> downside: sweaty all the time
