<midfavila>
think i might havee a bootable debian for the r01 tomorrow
<midfavila>
then after that alpine and finally kiss
<midfavila>
and then everyone will immediately rush out and buy 50 uconsoles becuase of how kewl running kiss on a wimply riscv chip in your pocket is
<midfavila>
im sure
<midfavila>
s/wimply/wimpy/

<midfavila>
eureka
<midfavila>
regular ol' debian is booting on the r01
<midfavila>
:3
<midfavila>
simple rootfs transplant worked, although i'll have to fiddle with it to get the network interfaces working
<midfavila>
ah i see, the broadcom wlan chip needs a blob... that's unfortunate
<midfavila>
maybe in the future they'll release a module with an atheros radio
zlg has quit [Ping timeout: 265 seconds]
<midfavila>
woop, got all the hardware working, it seems

<midfavila>
performance is notably snappier than the default image too.
<midfavila>
there was a ton of latency while ssh'ing into the uconsole under the default ubuntu
<midfavila>
there's so much crud in the default image, you're almost always pegged at like 50-60% average load
<midfavila>
hmmmm. might just shoot straight for ubuntu. looks like the sbi shipped by clockwork is out of date and doesn't implement certain instructions required to be compliant with the riscv64 spec, so some debian packages don't work as is... notably, uh, apt
<riteo>
another little console!!!!!!!!!111111!!!!!1!111!
<midfavila>
oh okay that's kind of neat actually
<midfavila>
i appreciate the ortho keeb and pretty robust IO
<midfavila>
might be worth adapting elements into the uconsole
<midfavila>
the joystick looks like shit though
<midfavila>
guarantee you it's going to break the second you keep it in a bag
<riteo>
yeah I kinda hope those are just experimental thing
<riteo>
apparently they're not finalized
<midfavila>
ye ofc
<riteo>
but little consoles are everywhere!!!! :DDD
<midfavila>
just renders
<riteo>
kinda happy to see the market thrive
<midfavila>
i appreciate the increase in attention towards vertical form factors
<midfavila>
usually mini-PCs are all clamshells or ITX
<midfavila>
ITX is just mATX but malnourished and clamshells are eh
<riteo>
this means that I will either be able to get a cheap one as a "major gift" in the medium-term future or that I'll perhaps even be able to buy one myself in the long term
<midfavila>
...well, i suppose the mATX is just malnourished ATX, but still
<midfavila>
i bet you could get a part-time job pretty easily riteo
<riteo>
yes
<riteo>
but then I'd study even less at my uni
<midfavila>
probably take less than a week to save up enough for toys
<midfavila>
get a job where you can study on the clock
<midfavila>
:3c
<midfavila>
when i worked night shifts at a c-store before i moved i just watched movies and read books lmao
<riteo>
so as long as I don't _need_ it I think it's better for my health to not put too much stuff in the pan
<riteo>
yeah that's also a possibility
<midfavila>
come on you know you would lose it if you could run kiss on that in your pocket
<midfavila>
:3c
<riteo>
sdflkjasfpoadsgacioghasiogcmsdrhdg
<midfavila>
you could ssh into your serveeer i bet
<riteo>
I'll bring up the "I just started uni" card
<midfavila>
"mama, papa, i have been a good boy"
<midfavila>
"i need a new computer for university"
<riteo>
that's my plan-ish
<midfavila>
:P
<riteo>
like, a major gift would mean birthdays
<midfavila>
do you do christmas? christmas is coming up
<midfavila>
that would count i assume
<riteo>
already got something, I think
<riteo>
no idea what
<riteo>
but I have to massage the idea first
<riteo>
and then research
<riteo>
and whatnot
<riteo>
but that's why I'm happy that there's a market
<midfavila>
well, don't rush
<midfavila>
i'm thinking i might have kiss on the r01 by the end of the day
<riteo>
great
<midfavila>
we'll *see*
<riteo>
btw I unironically want a PDA long term
<midfavila>
i mean the uconsole has been a great PDA
<midfavila>
i used an old zaurus i refurbished when i was in high school
<riteo>
like, I really don't use my phone as one and if I ever needed one I'd either get a dumbphone or just not overload my android phone with crap
<midfavila>
aside from the zaurus having garbo battery life it was sweet
<midfavila>
honestly i'm in the same spot. i've found the uconsole great for that.
<riteo>
owo
<midfavila>
owowowowowowowowowowowowowo
<midfavila>
the biggest issue i've had so far is the display is technically portrait
<midfavila>
so the kernel framebuffer is too
<riteo>
wasn't there a kernel option for that
<midfavila>
despite the physical orientation being landscape
<midfavila>
there's fbcon
<midfavila>
but that only rotates the fb console itself
<riteo>
I'm quite sure there's ways around that
<riteo>
like the steam deck had to do that
<midfavila>
i mean for sure
<riteo>
because of the same identical reason
<midfavila>
i imagine it'd be an easy kernel patch if there's no way to change it
<midfavila>
problem is that sunxi hasn't upstreamed their kernel
<riteo>
ouch
<midfavila>
and the only way to get source rn is if you a) know chinese and b) sign an nda
<riteo>
> Plan 9-tan is fairly short like many of the Unices. She is only slightly taller than UNIX, being her direct descendant.
<midfavila>
unixes have to be smol
<riteo>
that's peak computer science right there
<riteo>
> Another theory is that she is a fan of Touhou
<riteo>
oh no
<midfavila>
shit i should try to get sortix running on the reform at some point
<riteo>
do not let them mingle with touhou
<midfavila>
that would be cool
<riteo>
the collision would cause a fucking black hole
<midfavila>
>9front
<riteo>
9front's website is just really... funky
<midfavila>
you dont know your touhous riteo smdh
<riteo>
I do
<midfavila>
then you would know it's already too late :3
<midfavila>
anyway yeah uhhhhh
<riteo>
I listened to like the whole OST unironically up to 16 or so and played a sketchy copy of 13 from a friend of mine until I found out that I wasn't really supposed to have it
<midfavila>
framebuffer only + curses menu for an interface is pretty comfy
<riteo>
but the website that shall not be named got its shit fixed apparently by ZUN's lawyers
<riteo>
yes it seems indeed mid
<riteo>
sounds even better than touchscreen
<midfavila>
i did a little fiddling with dialog a while back and aside from dialog being an absolute monstrosity it was nice
<riteo>
I mean, fb has its limitations but as long as one has clear usecases defined ig that's fine
<riteo>
I would not really consider it "convergent" as in full-fledged desktop experience when plugged
<riteo>
but it has its own very nice charm
<midfavila>
personally i'm not super interested in convergence like what the pine people are doing
<midfavila>
desktops are desktops, mobiles are mobiles
<midfavila>
it's novel and if you don't do desktop things it would be great
<riteo>
honestly it makes perfect sense when your mobile has an extremely powerful CPU inside that's being barely used to its full potential
<midfavila>
but i like being able to get beefy CPUs and more memory and swap out my GPU and sound card and stuff
<riteo>
so you could have dumbed down swiss knife thing when you move and then super complex desktop ui when docked
<riteo>
and your data in one place without clouds or shit
<midfavila>
yeah but i dont wanna >:c
<riteo>
yeye fair
<riteo>
you still plan to dock the thing or keep it mobile at all times?
<midfavila>
well, it's going to be my mobile device, so, yeah
<midfavila>
it wouldnt make a lot of sense to dock it anyway
<riteo>
fair
<riteo>
really interesting what you'll come out with in the end
<midfavila>
i'm still looking at building a new workstation using an ampere or a pioneer as the base
<riteo>
really lots of possibilities
<riteo>
that will also be very tasty too
<midfavila>
yeb
<midfavila>
if i can get tinyx to run decently on the uconsole i might switch to that
<midfavila>
lots of things are still in the air at this point
<riteo>
yeah fair
<riteo>
honestly a very tiny display server might be potentially more efficient if it uses stuff like hardware planes
<midfavila>
the ideal would be mgr but alas
<midfavila>
disappointed there's no temple os tan
<riteo>
not that much honestly
<riteo>
and really probably it's there, buried in some anonymous imageboard thread
<riteo>
supposing it doesn't get deleted because somebody makes a post describing their hate for [insert minority here] because whatever
<riteo>
literally my experience with /g/ the month or so I tried to browse it
<midfavila>
sounds about right
<midfavila>
i only bother with desktop and emacs threads
<midfavila>
everything else is crap
* midfavila
sips
<riteo>
lol
<midfavila>
tea time
<riteo>
yay
<riteo>
what kind
<riteo>
gotta rice that cup
<riteo>
nyways sortix sounds cute (// > W < //)
<riteo>
damn is it hard to make these little faces with a monospace font
<riteo>
the japanese really mastered variable-space fonts
<midfavila>
"buckingham garden"
<midfavila>
that's what the shop i get it from calls it anyway
<midfavila>
it's just a flowery earl grey
<midfavila>
oh huh the pilet is from vancouver
<midfavila>
more canadian computer stuff. neat
