yeah ik im not saying the reform is the end all be all
<midfavila>
im just saying that the framework barely clears the bar for being not *complete* junk
<midfavila>
a cheapo thinkpad + nice desktop would be a better use of money, as an individual
<midfavila>
that being said the framework is the laptop i would suggest to my boss if we were to buy company machines

oh ffs, the bouncer is all of a sudden behind a paywall. very well then.. what bouncers to people use? or recommend. preferably free
<sad_plan>
midfavila: i think the framework is a viable alternative to most other laptops. yeah, you can only buy the repair stuff from then, which is a drawback, but theyre atleast doing *something* different. most other laptops arent easily (or at all) upgradeable, or fixable if something broke. which is why i like it.

sad_plan: I host my own :PPPPPPPPPPPP
<sad_plan>
riteo: that ive noticed :p do you run it in-house, or do you rent a remote server?
<riteo>
in house
<riteo>
hence the funky uptime
<sad_plan>
i get that
<riteo>
I mean it does not take much; if you've got a rpi it should be enough tbh
<riteo>
but like mid knows some hosted ones I think, midfavila
<riteo>
I forgot their names honestly
<sad_plan>
yeah, a bouncer doesnt require much tbh. id probably add couple other things aswell, but nothing too heavy I suppose.
<sad_plan>
sdf is the name, but I belive its paid aswell? i gotta check. it has several other resources, which can be nice aswell

There's plenty of other alternatives to sdf. Look at some of the tildeverse accounts you can get for free. I have one on tilde.town, for instance.

thomas_adam: ill take a look. thanks
<thomas_adam>
But then I like all of this smol stuff ("small internet"). That's why I like the tildeverse, not just because it's a "free" shell account. ;)

sewn: bouncer thew me out, as its behind pico+ now appearantly
<sewn>
yep
<sewn>
I didn't expect it to be so soon
<sewn>
I don't know any other bouncer service :(
<sad_plan>
theres appearently several, but dunno how good they are
<thomas_adam>
sad_plan: Seriously -- I reckon you'd get more luck with a tilde account somewhere.
<sad_plan>
thomas_adam: im going to look into that when I get back on my laptop for sure
<sewn>
the keyboard doesn't work either you have to refocus termux for it to work
<thomas_adam>
Well, that sounds to me more like an issue with how the phone expects you to work. Anything involving a terminal on a phone and an on-screen keyboard is already awkward.
<thomas_adam>
But good luck to you -- I don't hink your case, sewn, is necessarily the common one.
<thomas_adam>
s/hink/t&/
<sewn>
i mean you said "to each their own"
<sewn>
maybe theres someone out there who likes this setup
<thomas_adam>
sewn: There will be, yes. :)
<sewn>
masochists probably
<thomas_adam>
sewn: Actually, I can think of a former colleague of mine who used to use a Nokia phone back in the early 2000s with a physical keyboard.
<sewn>
who wouldnt want a physical keyboard?!
<sewn>
look at what they took from us
<thomas_adam>
These days it's all software.

I guess that's something to be said for Blackberry.
<thomas_adam>
But with the advent of folding phones, I can't see physical keyboards ever coming back.

thomas_adam: thought it was tilde.town :p sewn you can bring your own client, so you can still use senpai if you want. or catgirl or w/e.
<sad_plan>
it seems to be some of the same stuff as sdf
<thomas_adam>
sad_plan: Sort of, yes.
<sad_plan>
are those related, or separate projects?
<sad_plan>
sewn: why not?
<sewn>
because the bouncers are for tilde
<sewn>
not for other irc networks
<sad_plan>
ah, thats lame
<sad_plan>
so you serioisly can connect it to other networks? that cant be righr

thomas_adam: i think i got it now. did a quick look at tilde, and tilde.town, is just one of many tildes. and they all offer different things, along with some interests being in center. which tilde do you use? Didnt look at all of them, but do they really have bouncers? isnt it just ssh tunneling?
