<nero>
does that mean i need a DVD drive to burn it?
<SiFuh>
Not sure. Can't use a USB flash drive?
<nero>
in theory, yes
<nero>
i was researching whether i can keep a read-only disc around
<farkuhar>
aren't there some models of SD card that let you toggle a switch to make the medium read-only? maybe you could burn the iso to one of those.
<nero>
the read-only mechanism was in search for reliability
<nero>
SD cards are, in my experience, notoriously unreliable
<farkuhar>
then I guess a DVD writer is the best option for you.

Btw does anyone know a knob to get back to X font display before the last update, freetype, cairo, libfontconfig, X11 involved?
<stenur>
Firefox-bin fonts now look terrible, both too sharp (leaner) and a bit anti-aliasing smearing i seem to see too

nero: Yep SD cards are horrible like that and quite slow. To be honest, I am not sure why it would need to be read only. It doesn't take long to re-write the stick.
<SiFuh>
Took me a bit to find out the name but some of the gus use an IODD
<SiFuh>
IODD 2531 seems a bit expensive though
<farkuhar>
"me also, should fit on CD." agree with stenur here. If the base system gets too big to fit on a 700MB CD, why not adopt the OpenBSD practice and offer a netinstall CD (which assumes that the user will establish an internet connection before selecting and installing packages)?
<stenur>
that is also cool; linux-firmware is a hog; and firefox is also huge, shall that really be on the CD; >250 MB alone
<stenur>
(of course firmware may be crucial for many boxes)
<stenur>
But netboot is a cool idea!
<SiFuh>
Core install only ;-)
<SiFuh>
Some things will needed to be includd outside of core though.
<farkuhar>
On 2022-03-31 in response to ppetrov^, jaeger informed us that the updated packages are NOT currently available "just as packages". This situation would have to change if we wanted a <250MB iso for installing over the internet.
