<remiliascarlet> SiFuh_: "Even that link remiliascarlet posted about Linus having the Russian dev team removed from the Linux Kernel is not only petty and childish, but they just follow orders, like good little slaves." The link is petty, childish, and just follow orders like good little slaves?
<SiFuh_> remiliascarlet: _they_ not _it_
<remiliascarlet> ukky: Every BSD except for OpenBSD has a Linux binary compatibility layer of some kind. OpenBSD used to have one too, but they removed it at one point.
<remiliascarlet> SiFuh_: Oh, I see.
<remiliascarlet> Also, having to give GNU credit for every single Linux distro, imagine if we were all forced to give credit to every custom built PC: AMD/Nvidia/Crucial/Kingston/ASRock/CoolerMaster/Crusair/Amazon'sBrandlessSATACables/PC.
<remiliascarlet> Or AMD/Nvidia/Crucial/Kingston/ASRock/CoolerMaster/Crusair/Amazon'sBrandlessSATACables/ASUS/ARCHEER/Logicool/PC when including monitor, speakers, keyboard, and mouse.
<SiFuh_> remiliascarlet: Actually reminds me of something silly in Thai language.
<SiFuh_> 3 people = 3 khon (3 humans). 3 boys = 3 khon pu chai (3 human boys)
<SiFuh_> You can't say 3 pu chai (3 boys).
<SiFuh_> But with animals it is different. You say 3 cats = maew 3 tour (cat 3 bodies)
<SiFuh_> You can't use pu chai with cats if they are male.
<remiliascarlet> Might be an Asian thing in general. 3人の男 = 3 person boys. Can't say 3男.
<SiFuh_> Maew taw pu 3 tour ;-)
<SiFuh_> It makes no sense to refer to the boys as humans since boys ARE humans
<SiFuh_> Vietnamese is quite complex but doesn't have that feature. But it is an Australasian language
<remiliascarlet> Also, what I just said about creditting reminds me of some idiot the other day who tried to convince me that being a solo developer is literally impossible, because you're using a text editor, a terminal, an OS, and a compiler, which are all not made by me. I told him that I'm surprised he didn't point out that the chair, desk, building, soil, and air aren't made by me either.
<SiFuh_> There is this annoying spot on the wall that when I paint over, re-appears.
<SiFuh_> So I sanded it. Will try painting over it again.
<ukky> remiliascarlet: Linux compatibility layer gives me hope. I still have to figure out if all HW is supported, like USB-to-UART converters, FTDI, before atempting to install *BSD.
<SiFuh_> ukky: I use a USB serial adapter for my line printer on OpenBSD.
<SiFuh_> And chances are FTDI will work on all three BSDs
<ukky> SiFuh_: It might use different kernel driver that the one I need. Your printer is either USB or old style 25-pin parallel (LPT) printer.
<SiFuh_> USB didn't exist when my printer was made
<ukky> And OpenBSD is probably out of question, as I need bunch of cross-compilers, XRDP, etc.
zorz has joined #crux-social
<ukky> So, your printer has probably 25-pin parallel male connector.
<ukky> I see, your printer supports serial connection too.
<zorz> 'lo
<SiFuh_> ukky: When I worked for the university I had the OpenBSD Sparc64 connected to one. Syslog was directed to the printer. So it would print on the fly.
<ukky> But FTDI is different from RS232. Mine are 3.3V, and they have only 3 pins: ground, RX, and TX.
<SiFuh_> I am using the serial port not LPT
<SiFuh_> Not the 25-pin parallel
<ukky> I have to leave for work... Thanks SiFuh_ and remiliascarlet for feedback.

<farkuhar> zorz and uwumeowmeownyaa missed the earlier discussion of RMS and his FAQ about the GNU/Linux name: https://www.gnu.org/gnu/gnu-linux-faq.html

<farkuhar> I find it amusing that an avid emacs user wanted to print out that FAQ, ram it down RMS's throat, and slap him silly.
<SiFuh_> farkuhar: It was
<SiFuh_> farkuhar: The original EMACS was written in 1976 by David A. Moon and Guy L. Steele Jr. as a set of macros for the TECO editor. Gosling Emacs (often shortened to "Gosmacs" or "gmacs") is a discontinued Emacs implementation written in 1981 by James Gosling in C. In 1984, Richard Stallman began work on GNU Emacs, to produce a free software replacement to the proprietary Gosling Emacs.
<SiFuh_> GNU Emacs was initially based on Gosling Emacs
<zorz> :)
<zorz> make GNU great again
<farkuhar> Heh, software licensing shenanigans can be found in another story that's been making the news lately: https://www.theregister.com/2024/11/14/academic_papers_retracted_software_licensing/
<zorz> SiFuh_: nice T-Shirt
<zorz> best thing i heard lateley is that Putin merges the 3 major energy companies, and will eventually be second producer after aramco. This will give strength to BRICS
<SiFuh_> BRICS isn't based on oil
<SiFuh_> zorz: https://s3.amazonaws.com/i.snag.gy/LIoKwa.jpg https://s3.amazonaws.com/i.snag.gy/JXmh7H.jpg Cleaned, and repaired. Should work without a hitch. The pressure release safety valve also functions.
<SiFuh_> So if the main tray get's blocked, it shouldn't explode
<zorz> ooooooo you cleaned it
<zorz> SiFuh_: it looks like brand new
<SiFuh_> Interesting that the design is like a moonshine distiller without a thump keg or a condensor.
<SiFuh_> It has a bubbler plate inside, and a Jin Basket
<SiFuh_> Gin*
<SiFuh_> So it basically acts similar in nature to a reflux distiller.
<zorz> make gin...
<zorz> become a 007 :P
