<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> Aren't we already in the (better yet) ... (insert next new creation here)
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> @lanefu did you ever watch the original Tron?
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> That's what got me interested in some of my synth music. I have a few of my old synths still
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> I was a drummer mostly though
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> guyyss
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> should i start using linux as my main os?
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> You should see the interfaces to hook these things up to linux... still terrible to this day....
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> The software is next to non-existant
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> i dont get what ur trying to say
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> ?
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> Use what you feel comfortable with.
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> hmmmm
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> ...
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> I was talking to Lane
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> oh
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> but does wine run windows apps at a decent speed?
<jspiros>
speed isn't the issue with wine, generally
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> cuz i do need widnows apps
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> oh
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> agreed... its usually compatibility
<jspiros>
the main issue that can come up is programs not working at all, or having weird bugs with wine
<jspiros>
but generally when things /do/ run well (and you can check the appdb to confirm that others have had success with a particular program), they run at native speed
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> if it runs them it runs them well
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> hmmm... waht about gaming
<jspiros>
same deal
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> games are very hit and miss
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> okayy
<jspiros>
if it runs well, speed is rarely a concern
<jspiros>
but whether it runs well depends
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> okayyy
<jspiros>
Valve has done a good job sponsoring a lot of work in that area, too, with Proton
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> There is a website out there that documents people's success with it
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> jspiros: do you remember/know that website by chance?
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> Its a Wine gaming centric site
<jspiros>
I know the wine appdb and the proton appdb
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> i think winehq.org keeps one right?
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> yeah thats one I remembered... I never used proton so I didn't know about that one
<jspiros>
if you are using Steam and really lazy you can see what the SteamDeck compatibility is for a given game on Steam, since SteamDeck is Linux-based, if it runs on SteamDeck well, might run fine on other Linux machines too
<jspiros>
but yeah, those dbs are the place to look
<jspiros>
outside of Steam, Lutris is a nice interface for setting up other games with Proton and/or Wine
<jspiros>
for a beginner it's easier than trying to use wine directly, but it uses wine underneath
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> look up winetricks too
<jspiros>
Lutris should handle all the winetricks stuff needed
<jspiros>
as does Steam's Proton integration
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> Oh ok good
<jspiros>
Lutris basically uses things kinda like build scripts for different games/apps, contributed/maintained by the community, for easy installation of things
<jspiros>
and creates dedicated wine environments for each thing, so different wine/proton versions can be used for maximum compatibility
<jspiros>
similar to how Steam does it, but Lutris is open source and not a game store
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> Yeah that is helpful...
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> pop os has lutris preinstalled
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> nice
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> have any of u bought linux laptops?
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> No. I'm an Apple user
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> which macbook
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> ?
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> pro
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> yeah MBP ARM
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> oh
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> Have a x86 one too but glad they went to arm
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> mac does have better battery compared to windows
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> like wayyyy better
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> Yeah.. I have a HP Omen too and it has terrible battery life ( but its a I7 with NVIDIA gaming laptop)
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> I own 0 desktops
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> i mean windows does win the gaming aspect
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> cuz who games on mac?
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> I do... I have about 5-10 I play daily on here
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> ...
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> ok
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> linux windows or mac?
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> mac
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> windows
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> Mostly using Steam
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> steam is on mac?
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> Yep
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> never knew
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> ok but what if u considerd the price? would u pick windows/linux over it?
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> no
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> ok
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> I've used OS X since very early on and am very happy
<DC-IRC>
<viraniac> the patch was for bookworm minimal image
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> oh
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> u didint tell that
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> but does it need to be minimal?
<DC-IRC>
<viraniac> just search in the code, where its trying to disable smartd.service. Add || true at the end
<DC-IRC>
<viraniac> Nextcloud will anyway modify your system pretty heavily to make it secure, By going with minimal image, I reduced the amount of sofwares its has to tweak
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> ok
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> and where do i do that?
<DC-IRC>
<viraniac> do git grep -n smartd.service, the command will give you the answer
<DC-IRC>
<viraniac> do `git grep -n smartd.service`, the command will give you the answer
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> fatal: not a git repository (or any of the parent directories): .git
<DC-IRC>
<viraniac> where did you ran it?
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> thats what it got
<DC-IRC>
<viraniac> is it where you cloned the nextcloudpi repository?
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> yes
<DC-IRC>
<viraniac> And did you clone it or simply downloaded the compressed file from git?
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> i cloned it
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> using git clone
<DC-IRC>
<viraniac> thats not that command is telling you
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> ?
<DC-IRC>
<viraniac> Thats certainly is not consistent with what that error is telling me
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> i did git clone
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> and then used your patch
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> and the ran install.sh
<DC-IRC>
<viraniac> if you did git clone and if you are inside nextcloudpi directory, then git grep will work
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> hmm
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> i did git clone and ran it inside the nextcloudi folder
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> oh wait
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> i didnt run git grep -n smartd.service in the nextcloudpi folder
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> thats why
<DC-IRC>
<viraniac> let me make you. an offer, I can get on a zoom call and assist you in setting it up. You have to pay $50 per hour (discounted rate only for you) to me
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> what
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> it says nothing
<DC-IRC>
<viraniac> let me make you an offer, I can get on a zoom call and assist you in setting it up. You have to pay $50 per hour (discounted rate only for you) to me

<DC-IRC>
<viraniac> try removing .service
<DC-IRC>
<viraniac> @shivasiddharth You really are always in too much hurry, don't you? BTW whats your goal for setting this up? You are setting it up only to get it installed or you are doing it to learn about linux and cloud?
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> im trying to turn this into our own cloud to store photos
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> cuz we have wayyyy to many

<DC-IRC>
<viraniac> why did you went with Opi Zero instead of a raspberry pi?
<DC-IRC>
<viraniac> As you are too new to this scene, a raspberry pi would have been better for you as those scripts are written wit PiOS in mind
<DC-IRC>
<viraniac> And it seems you are not interested in learning about basic linux commands. Having even beginner level knowledge of basic linux commands would have helped you in figuring out the issue yourself. Also it would have made it possible for us to guide you easier.
<DC-IRC>
<viraniac> Most of the time you are posting just summary errors and asking for help with some third party scripts which would require us to go through them ourselves as we didn't developed the same.
<DC-IRC>
<viraniac> Please understand that most of the people here have jobs. And after that whatever free time they get they try to contribute to armbian.
<DC-IRC>

<viraniac> The board you have chosen only has power to barely run it. It won't be able to stand the load once you start uploading all your photos to it
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> ok what about an aml tv box?
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> amlogic s905w
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> and i could use the nextcloudpi images right?
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> wait il check
<DC-IRC>
<viraniac> As I said in PM, running a cloud service requires a lot of knowledge, that you don't pocesses. You would have seen that a lot of time public cloud services go down. Discord itself was down yesterday. These companies have thousands of people working for them and those people with years of experience also becomes clueless to solve the issue
<DC-IRC>
<viraniac> You don't have any knowledge about linux, first learn about it. I shared the link to the nextcloud forum with you
<DC-IRC>
<shivasiddharth> oookayyy
<DC-IRC>
<viraniac> When you are able to understand and and suggest fix to atleast one of the issues posted there, then you can consider yourself ready to set this up yourself
