hello, I was wondering: how can I upgrade my orange pi 5+ to a kernel 6.x from the legacy image ? I tried armbian-config but it seems to not boot after that. Any ideas?
maknho has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
<Treibholz>
CapNemo: I think, the legacy-kernel is heavily patched. I once tried to merge it with 6.1, but there were too many merge conflicts.
<DC-IRC>
<station010> The 6.x kernel for OPI5+ does not have HDMI support at present so maybe it does boot but you can only use SSH connection (no graphic desktop)
<Treibholz>
CapNemo: what are you missing in 5.10.160?
<CapNemo>
Treibholz: mostly the module rbd to have ceph drives
<Treibholz>
CapNemo: rbd is not that new. It should be available in 5.10.x...
<Treibholz>
yes, /boot/config-5.10.160-legacy-rk35xx says: # CONFIG_BLK_DEV_RBD is not set
<CapNemo>
yes maybe I need to build a new image with the build project, but I would have to disable upgrade on the kernel package for sure
<Treibholz>
I couldn't get zfs-dkms compiled with 5.10.160-legacy-rk35xx, so I also thought about building it myself. In the hope, that just the headers don't match properly.
<Treibholz>
But then I decided to go with btrfs (zfs for the poor) - as long as I don't use parity-raid, I guess it's good enough.
<CapNemo>
ah yes dkms is another universe on top of that :-/

would anyone know if OpenMediaVaault works with Kernel: 6.1.50-current-rockchip64 aarch64 bits: 64 Distro: Armbian GNU/Linux 11 (bullseye) SBC is ARM Device System: FriendlyElec NanoPi M4 Ver2.0 . 6-Core model: N/A variant-1: cortex-a72 variant-2: cortex-a53 bits: 64

CapNemo: what's the minimum of nodes you need for CEPH? 3 or 4? I'm wondering if this could become a nice replacement for my HP MicroServer Gen8, which still works well but is also quite old now.
<CapNemo>
Treibholz: yep, 3 as a minimum.

<Treibholz>
I'm thinking about k3s with rook. The OPi5+ is about as fast as the Xeon E3-1230 V2, which I have in the microserver.

<tenkawa42> _Random: Please only post once

Treibholz: yes that's exactly my intention ;) I have 3 orangepi5+ with ssds

<CapNemo>
ok, this is super weird: by using the build script, I can see the rbd module is properly compiled, but for some reason it's not included into the debian package ?!
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> CapNemo: what build script?
<CapNemo>
tenkawa42, the armbian/build project
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> Do you have the output you can upload to paste.armbian.com ?
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> so after install you get nothing on a sudo modinfo rbd?
<CapNemo>
basically module not found and it's indeed not present in the package
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> this is putting it in the 5.10 pkg.. you are expecting that right?
<CapNemo>
yes, unless that assumption is not good
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> Yeah it says it "should" be in /armbian/output/packages-hashed/global/linux-image-legacy-rk35xx_5.10.160-Sa838-D6ad0-P0000-C999999Hfe66-HK01ba-Vc222-Bc698-R448a_arm64.deb
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> very odd
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> Let me build it here
<CapNemo>
ok
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> Ok this shouldn't take too long... I have a very fast builder
<CapNemo>
ehehe no worries :)
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> Git pulls are the slowest part
<CapNemo>
oh yes, Im keeping a vm alive to avoid that phase
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> I have a lot of bandwidth.. unfortunately slower/distant mirrors for me
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> wow only at 31% on the git pull on the full tree
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> wow only at 31% on the git pull on the shallow tree

Tenkawa: FYI, by creating a brand new VM, I got the module included properly. So I guess there was some left overs that was locking the building in a given state
<Tenkawa>
Good to hear the cleanup work... quite annoying when odd things occur like that
<CapNemo>
thanks a lot for having testing it as well :)
