Hi everyone!

<chris_99>
Hi, i'm just wondering i'm using Armbian_23.8.1_Orangepi5-plus_jammy_legacy_5.10.160_xfce_desktop.img but video playback with 'mpv' is very stuttery, i'm wondering if there is a GPU driver i need to install? I saw 'Enable 3D Acceleration (Ubuntu variant only)' but guess that doesn't apply for video? I tried --hwdec=auto, and noticed messages such as 'libEGL warning: DRI2: failed to authenticate' which sound like there's no GPU
<chris_99>
interesting point, i just tried as root
<chris_99>
but got 'error: XDG_RUNTIME_DIR not set in the environment.'
<thms>
I'm not sure that command is supposed to be ran as root tho. What is the full command you are running ? I guess you could get that environment variable from your $USER.
<thms>
Since you've got XFCE installed, can't you try using VLC to see if it makes any difference ?
<thms>
did you have it working on another OS on same hardware or is that your first time doing that ? Other videos formats are fine ?
<chris_99>
i tried ' DISPLAY=:0.0 sudo -E mpv *.mkv --audio-device=pulse/alsa_output.platform-hdmi0-sound.stereo-fallback --hwdec=auto' too, which gave the same DRM error. I've not tried another OS yet
<chris_99>
will install vlc and try that
<thms>
well mpv should not be ran as root imho. though there seem to be a permissions problem with the libEGL. I'd give VLC a try before trying more stuff with MPV :).
<Treibholz>
but for working libEGL you do need the 3D Acceleration stuff, I guess. At least I didn't get wayland running without it.
<chris_99>
gotcha, i'm just installing those now, would they work with Xorg?
<Treibholz>
Don't know. I try to avoid Xorg when ever I can nowadays.
<chris_99>
ah
<Treibholz>
on bookworm the ffmpeg-package from these ppas can't be installed (dependencies...) I guess, this would speed up mpv significantly... Maybe I'l try to compile it myself for bookworm.
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> Try gnome variant. AFAIK gnome comes with Wayland which is supported by the hw accel packages
<Treibholz>
anyway: mpv works here, but no hw-decoding
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> *Jammy gnome
<chris_99>
ffplay seems to be working a lot better for me at the moment, than mpv interestingly
<chris_99>
oh actually , just tried mpv again, after installing the 3d drivers, and that's working better too
<chris_99>
looks like there is some tearing type effect though
<chris_99>
will try the gnome like you say

i think it looks better still in gnome, but can anyone help with a daft question, i've never used gnome/wayland, how do i make mpv fullscreen, even when i hit 'f' which normally does this, it's still got a lot of wayland/gnome still visible
<Treibholz>
chris_99: looks broken here with wayland/sway and mpv on bookworm, too. ffplay in fullscreen works.
<chris_99>
hmm ffplay seems to be using 88% cpu for me, whereas mpv, 30%

I just noticed on my tv it says 4k @ 30p, with my orange pi, does anyone know how it decides whether its 30p, 60p,.., im just wondering if i maybe need a higher hdmi spec cable
<chris_99>
oh sorry, i see in display config the max setting i've got is 30Hz, but seems the tv does support 60Hz, so maybe it is the cable
lyri has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> chris_99: how old would you say the cable is?
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> guesstimate
<chris_99>
good question, it could well be 4yrs old, i've no real clue though
lyri has joined #armbian
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> It "might" support 4k but that's going to be close
<chris_99>
ah, i'll order a new one, to be sure, i found one that says hdmi 2.1 online
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> I have a handful of cables here and only 2 of them work on my 4k box
<chris_99>
ah intersting, thanks
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> I have found... if can be done.. the shorter the better

<chris_99>
i was trying to play a 4k 60fps video, whilst my screen says the resolution, is 4k 30fps, and mpv is dropping lots of frames, so hoping a new cable might help
<chris_99>
yeah i'll get a 1m one
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> heavier gauge wire obviously but they don't usually adverise/show the cable to let you see
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> er advertise
<jspiros>
I have had good experiences with the Monoprice Certified Premium line of HDMI cables for 4k interconnect
<jspiros>
they are fairly thick and stiff, though, if that matters to you
<jspiros>
have had no problems at least up to 10ft length, in a fairly electrically noisy environment (home theater equipment area with lots of cables)
<jspiros>
I'd imagine many other good cables are out there, of course, just sharing my experience with that line :)
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> yeah.. 10 ft is usually ok now.. some of the earlier cables were iffy
<jspiros>
I do know that all my 4K capable devices (various UHD BD players and PS5) came with cables that were pretty spotty compared to the Monoprice Premium Certified ones, so I replaced the former with the latter in each case
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> The connectors originally were semi-junk too

<0xdamian> what is the fastest way to copy stuff from one disk to another?
<DC-IRC>
<0xdamian> dd?
<chris_99>
wouldn't copying files be faster, unless you mean to take an image
<DC-IRC>
<0xdamian> If you ask "how much gb?" then the answer would be 983,3gb
<DC-IRC>
<0xdamian> from 1tb nvme to 4tb ssd
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> What interface? nvme/usb/etc?
<DC-IRC>
<0xdamian> NVME to SATA3
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> Do you want to retain same filesystem types?
<DC-IRC>
<0xdamian> idk
<DC-IRC>
<0xdamian> both are gpt
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> You want to keep the structure intact though right?
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> No changes for now except to increase the size at end possibly
<DC-IRC>
<0xdamian> both are a data grave
<DC-IRC>
<0xdamian> there is no system on it
<DC-IRC>
<0xdamian> like music movies and other shit
<DC-IRC>
<c0rnelius77> just use `cp -r`. You could use rsync but I don't think thats gonna make it any quicker.
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> actually rsync will speed it up a lot
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> especially if there are small files
<DC-IRC>
<c0rnelius77> not really. but sure... use rsync
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> I use it a lot
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> rsync can also do multitplexing where cp doesn't
<DC-IRC>
<0xdamian> 5gb files
<DC-IRC>
<c0rnelius77> rync is more for like reserving permissions which apparently doesn't matter here.
<DC-IRC>
<c0rnelius77> rync is more for like preserving permissions which apparently doesn't matter here.
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> Since he is using non compressable media rsync will likely be slower. I didn't notice he said music, movies etc
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> With compressable files it takes advantage of multiple cpus quite nicely
<DC-IRC>
<c0rnelius77> Yeah thats what I'm saying. It isn't like transferring one rootfs from one disk to another. Its just a basic transfer.
<DC-IRC>
<tenkawa42> Or small files.. (or the network it really flies)
<KREYREN>
official support for licheeeeeeeee pi 4a landing soon btw~
<KREYREN>
i should submit a flake to the armbian project so that i can build these things over my build farm it takes like ages rn
