<Dave> Hi all, I’ve bought an Orange Pi Zero 2 to use with my 3D printer and have been looking to set it up. I noticed the bundled Debian sources list is full of non-standard Debian mirrors which has brought me to question the security integrity of the rest of the device.
<DC-IRC>
<Dave> Am I correct in thinking that by instead running Armbian that the kernel will be replaced, and that the device will be ‘safer’ (cant think of a better word right now to describe) than using the stock build from the company?
<DC-IRC>
<IgorPec> Bundled "Debian" is Chinese fork of Armbian. Its sed -i s/Armbian/Orangepi/ on all files, compliled by them and attached to their .cn repository
<DC-IRC>
<IgorPec> in tl;dr; format
<DC-IRC>
<Dave> So by installing Armbian directly from Armbian I'm getting a less modified OS and Kernel, is that correct? I

<Dave> So by installing Armbian directly from Armbian I'm getting a less modified OS and Kernel, is that correct?
<DC-IRC>
<Dave> Im looking eliminate any interference with the build and ensure the device isn't easily compromised out of the box.
<DC-IRC>
<Dave> And apologies if these question maybe appear dumb, I'm new to this space and trying to get a handle on being as secure as I can be.
<DC-IRC>
<IgorPec> armbian is assembled from sources. build framework is open source, you can verify how it is assembled. user space packages (applications) came from debian and ubuntu. they are getting software from git authors ... so there is a chain of trust ... as secure as possible is armbian, forks are only adding more security troubles as are commercially oriented and don't even understand what security is
<DC-IRC>
<IgorPec> but security is not a simple question.
<DC-IRC>
<Dave> Absolutely understood, I trust that open source chain more than I do the pre-made modified bundle provided by the vendor. Thanks for your help, much appreciated @IgorPec
<DC-IRC>
<IgorPec> vendor has to provide something and their intention is to show "look, the feature i am selling you, works"
<DC-IRC>
<IgorPec> the rest is too expensive for them to address
<DC-IRC>
<Dave> Agreed, it’s a concern to me because of a lack of updates. If I install Armbian and switch to the Armbian bootloader my idea is that the whole stack would be mainline Linux
<DC-IRC>
<Dave> That would give me more confidence in the device being on my network, unless I’m missing something?
<DC-IRC>
<baaz> can someone solve my problem related to ubuntu not showing my hard drive in the files app, while i can see it by running the fdisk -l command but can't access the files. It didnt have any os installed on it all the files were videos and photos . i recently shifted from windows but the thing is that i installed lubuntu on my ssd (on which i previously had windows)
<DC-IRC>
<Werner> This sounds like you are neither using Armbian nor aarch64 hardware?
<DC-IRC>
<baaz> wrong serevre
