<IgorPec> building bookworm/sid? That would be related to upstream dependency changes. i ran into that too

<Jason123> I am building bullseye
<Armbian-Discord>
<christian> Hi to everyone. I just installed bullseye on my rock64 board. I don't get why onboard ethernet is not renamed from eth0 to a predictable name, while an usb-ethernet adapter or a wifi usb dongle get renamed to a predictable name.
<Armbian-Discord>
<christian> Just to be clear, I do want to use predictable names
<Armbian-Discord>
<srepac> eth0 isn’t predictable for the onboard nic?
<Armbian-Discord>
<srepac> All other systems/sbcs use eth0 for the onboard nic
<Armbian-Discord>
<Jason123> every device arm or x86 use eth0 as the ethernet device name
<Armbian-Discord>
<christian> Ok, thanks
<CosmicDJ>
christian: check /boot/armbianEnv.txt or /boot/extlinux/extlinux.conf for "net.ifnames=0", remove it when you want predictable interface names; might break your networking config so make sure sure you have backups/serial console
<Armbian-Discord>
<christian> I get predictable interface names on other interfaces different than eth0 (the onboard one), net.ifnames=0 is not there

<rpardini> I think there's two mechanisms at play here. The main interface might be renamed by some netplan/NetworkManager/etc config (probably shipped by default) while USB net is not configured, so then defaults to whatever net.ifnames is set with by the kernel.

I was on Bitnet Relay before we even called it Relay Chat (and from whence Internet Relay Chat came)
<Armbian-Discord>
<christian> I'm not sure I understood what are you saying, but the one not renamed is the main interface (eth0), while usb ethernet is renamed:
<Armbian-Discord>
<christian> enx00e04d6de026: renamed from eth1
<Armbian-Discord>
<christian> Also I just installed the image so all the setting are the default ones
arch3r has quit [Quit: bye]
<Armbian-Discord>
<rpardini> yep. look into the NetworkManager configuration for the eth0 rename....

<Armbian-Discord>
<christian> I cannot find anything in network manager configuration related to interface naming, but that's ok. The only thing that matters to me is that interfaces don't change names since this board will run headless.

<Jason123> I think the issue with python3-rich is related to csc desktop on bullseye
<Armbian-Discord>
<IgorPec> its gnome problem on bullseye only

<IgorPec> all others builds fine

<Jason123> If its the same issue building then once its fixed for gnome then mate should be fine

<Vladimir Vladimir> Hi all! I have a maybe stupid question. I have a cubietruck with debian on it. Wifi drivers (brcmfmac) are buggy and don't work, but they say that armbian's do work nicely. Is it possible to use just the linux kernel from the armbian repositories without removing whole debian system?
<archetech>
yes use same deb version of pkg
<archetech>
ie 11 12
<lanefu>
i think the hooks in the armbian kernel debs might not play nice with vanilla debian
<archetech>
right just dont try to upgrade it
<archetech>
with apt
<archetech>
ive replaced my whole /boot with w/e I want on arm
<archetech>
gotta cp the corespendg /modules and /firmware too
lyri has joined #armbian
<lanefu>
archetech: so basically you extracted contents of .deb file and copied over?
alekksander has quit [Quit: Konversation terminated!]
<archetech>
ya from a known working install
<archetech>
oops I mean no but above way
<archetech>
I gues one could untar and do it too
<archetech>
or use dpkg but dont install
<Armbian-Discord>
<Vladimir Vladimir> I think there should exist much nicer way. May be i should try to install linux-image-current-sunxi and linux-dtb-current-sunxy packages. Looks like that should be enough.
<archetech>
nicer how
<lanefu>
validimir you should just install armbian if you want the easy button
<Armbian-Discord>
<c0rnelius> is it actually the wifi driver or just the firmware?
<lanefu>
IMHO it's probably gonna fuck your system up if you try to use the debs on top of your current debian install.. unless you perform the more surgical method archetech is describing
<archetech>
corn its usually a combo of fw and kern module
<Armbian-Discord>
<Vladimir Vladimir> Of course it won't fuck the system up itself. Just boot another kernel and the things are OK.
<archetech>
or kern config diff
<Armbian-Discord>
<c0rnelius> well yes... but has he tried diff firmware.
<Armbian-Discord>
<c0rnelius> the kernel module is a kernel module. jumping from 5.15 to 6.1 sure there are tons of changes, but if ur just on 5.15 there isn't much diff between armbian and debian.
<archetech>
diff is the "brittle" armbian userland
<Armbian-Discord>
<c0rnelius> I'm running Debian with Firmware: BCM43362/1 wl0: Dec 5 2019 07:26:04 version 5.90.254 FWID 01-0 and it runs solid on my Cubietruck.
<Armbian-Discord>
<Vladimir Vladimir> That's iteresting. What is the kernel version?
<archetech>
and which deb ver
<Armbian-Discord>
<c0rnelius> 6.1.10 #1 Wed Feb 8 22:47:15 EST 2023 armv7l
<Armbian-Discord>
<c0rnelius> custom kernel build, but I did nothing special to the wifi module. not patching.
<Armbian-Discord>
<c0rnelius> I had it on 5.15.y as well and it was fine.
<Armbian-Discord>
<Vladimir Vladimir> Thank you for the information. I'll dig more than.
<Armbian-Discord>
<c0rnelius> only thing specific to that board that I do is overclock it. but that didn't change the wifi behavior.
