<TRS-80> Really enjoying my PBP, even with Manjaro KDE that comes on it by default. I mean the hardware; it's thin and light, and has a nice feel to it; just as all the reviews I looked at had said.

<TRS-80> I can really see myelf taking this with me, instead of big and heavy clunnky old ThinkPads.
<Armbian-Discord> <Tonymac32> Yeah it's not bad
<Armbian-Discord> <Tonymac32> Despite it's preloaded OS. 😉
<Armbian-Discord> <Tonymac32> I need to unearth mine and set it back up. Did you get the NVMe adapter?
<Armbian-Discord> <Tonymac32> I'd slap a standard "unopinionated" function patches vanilla U-boot on it and just go EFI if possible. This is my go to for anything sporting a SPI flash at this point
<TRS-80> No NVMe, because portability (including battery life) are strong features for my (so far imagined) use-case. And so far, the eMMC has been fast enough for me, but we will see.
<TRS-80> My understanding (from some NicoD video, IIRC) is that the NVMe actually sucks power faster than the charger can provide it. lol But maybe that's been fixed since then.
<c0rnelius> sounds like a few grrls I know. zing!
<TRS-80> This vanilla EFI way is interesting, but I don't know how to do that at all. I have been trying (and failing) for days to build a Bullseye XFCE image using the build tool. Maybe I should file bug reports.
<TRS-80> c0rnelius: :)
<TRS-80> I was thinking about maybe just burning the Bullseye server image to an sd card, and then manually enstalling DE after that. Not sure if that will work or not.

<Armbian-Discord> <ManoftheSea> Have you tried a USB stick with Bullseye? If u-boot can do EFI, it should be able to find the installer on the USB, and then you just tell it to partition the eMMC
<Armbian-Discord> <ManoftheSea> Hmm, but that won't give you an armbian kernel
<TRS-80> Right. Also, I prefer to start with a sd card 'install' in case anything doesn't work, I sill have the Manjaro on eMMC as a fallback, I can still use the device.
<TRS-80> It did boot right up and work out of the box, which is nice for a change with any Arm based device. lol
<Armbian-Discord> <ManoftheSea> well, so stick the SD and the USB installer in at the same time
Lucanis has quit [Ping timeout: 244 seconds]
<TRS-80> Maybe I just bite the bullet and figure out how to start X, maybe with or without a greeter, and then straight into i3 which is what I ultimately want anyway. I been reading up on how to do that (here and there) for years, maybe I know enough to pull it off by now.
<TRS-80> If not, surely I will learn some more.
chewitt has quit [Quit: Zzz..]
<Armbian-Discord> <ManoftheSea> assuming everything's installed, you type startx
<TRS-80> Yes I know. But there are lots of little niggles.
<TRS-80> Like handling GTK settings, etc. Starting from an XFCE base was just sort of an easy workaround to all those problems.

* TRS-80 is strongly disinclined to allow more than one or two clicks of enabling JavaScript to see something on a proprietary platform
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> hmm, we can fire zoom ?
<TRS-80> There are F/LOSS alternatives
<TRS-80> I guess we are at point of (maybe?) there is a will, but not enough resources to investigate ways. I still think it looks bad for a F/LOSS project.
<Armbian-Discord> <TheBug> You should come anyways and talk to everyone it's fun
<TRS-80> on Discord?
<TRS-80> lol
<Armbian-Discord> <TheBug> "I don't see names, only communication methods"
<TRS-80> You are giving legitimacy to a proprietary platform by choosing them over F/LOSS alternatives. This harms the F/LOSS alternatives.
<Armbian-Discord> <TheBug> I am just saying you should come talk to the community
<Armbian-Discord> <TheBug> I didn't say any of that other stuff
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> yes, i aware of that. but going floss, we should be ditching many things and we would end up dealing with tools
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> which already took us too much time
<TRS-80> Igor, I know you well enough to know your position (and extreme time constraints). I stand by my points, and will continue to poke periodically. And I will do what I can to implement things myself, when I have time, rather than just complain.
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> i know! thank you
<TRS-80> I have always felt like, especially if we call ourselves after Debian, that it stands for a particular viewpoint wrt Free Software, in addition to the large package repo and other practical considerations.
<TRS-80> I was just reading The Arch wiki, intro page about the distro. Arch has no such philisophical stance. But Debian absolutely does. One of the main differences between various distros (other than surface things like package managers, etc.)
* TRS-80 steps down from soap box

<TRS-80> Igor gets the best juice
<Armbian-Discord> <Tonymac32> lol
<Armbian-Discord> <Tonymac32> I finally got 2x GbE wired into my office
<TRS-80> nice
<Armbian-Discord> <Tonymac32> one is running one of my wireless AP's
<TRS-80> all network and HA stuff was taken down with the move, will take me years to rebuild it all at the pace I work
* TRS-80 cries
<Armbian-Discord> <Tonymac32> I have a couple UniFI 6 AP's that seem to cover the house well neough
<Armbian-Discord> <Tonymac32> enough*
<Armbian-Discord> <Tonymac32> I used a hot stick to pull the cables through the unfortunate crawlspace separating the 2 basements
<Armbian-Discord> <Tonymac32> glad I bought that for reasons
<ArmbianHelper> ^ [image/png] (971.9KiB)
<Armbian-Discord> <Tonymac32> like so
<TRS-80> Is that like what I heard my buddy (low voltage installer) call a glow rod?
<TRS-80> I always pictured a long skinny fiberglass rod
* TRS-80 pulls latest and tries again
<Armbian-Discord> <Tonymac32> that's 20' of fiberglass rod good for 100 kv/foot
<Armbian-Discord> <Tonymac32> in theory
<Armbian-Discord> <Tonymac32> let's say I'd be comfortable getting a 12kv -> 25 kv line off of a car with that assuming I had some rubber boots
<TRS-80> @IgorPec I just pulled master, but seem to be getting same error?
<TRS-80> I think I will actually try other way, starting from Bullseye server image and then installing desktop packages. Should that work?

<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> workaround EXTRA_WIFI="no"
<TRS-80> thanks for tip, trying again
<Armbian-Discord> <IgorPec> you choose worse day 😉
<TRS-80> of course
<TRS-80> hmm, seem to be getting same error
<TRS-80> Do I need to do some extra cleaning or something?
<TRS-80> yeah I think I try the Bullseye -> manual install desktop way anyway
* TRS-80 goes looking for sd card
