<quantum_> so flash an image and try it?
<archetech> I dont like running an OS from a usb stick personnaly io hurts em
<quantum_> It's a solid Transcend. They haven't failed me in a decade.
<archetech> you miss my point
<archetech> not about brand
haritz has quit [Quit: ZNC 1.8.2+deb2 - https://znc.in]
<quantum_> I know, wear. But these are all Extended Wear.
<quantum_> And brand does matter.
<archetech> its your stick
<quantum_> I use these things in my security cameras for years.
<quantum_> Ok, trying...
<archetech> well you can buck the experts that have done the wear testing
<archetech> always people like you
<quantum_> I'm 68 and a real estate developer. It's not too important anymore, very much.
<archetech> ive abused my gear for yrs no rpoblem! lol
<quantum_> Not booting to USB. Maybe I should have used Etcher instead of dd.
<archetech> you are yanking the sdcard before its done writing
<archetech> cant go by the dd command finishing at the cmd prompy
<quantum_> sync when it's done.
<archetech> watch top and even after dd says done its still working in top for a while
<quantum_> I'll try Etcher.
<quantum_> ; sync clears the buffers. Always add this to dd.
<quantum_> Ok verified flash with Etcher.
<archetech> sync isnt the issue you seem to like to argue with my real world advice
haritz has joined #armbian
<quantum_> Well it doesn't seem to hit USB for boot. No blue light, no HDMI.
<archetech> cuz ya dont read to well
<quantum_> Glad I'm drinking. Lost a whole day now.
<archetech> did ya use odroid netboot
<archetech> no
<quantum_> No
<quantum_> Clearly I didn't understand what you were saying.
<quantum_> The switch is only for internal flash or SD.
<quantum_> Losing hope...
<quantum_> Oh, you didn't explain: odroid has netboot installer for usb3 drives
<quantum_> uses spi
<quantum_> Never heard of this.
<archetech> odroid has netboot installer for usb3 drives
<archetech> uses spi
<archetech> its covered in the odroid wiki and forum
<quantum_> Definitely. But these words make no sense since I am not familiar with them.
<quantum_> Ok, maybe netboot is a wrapper for booting to the network, faking out the USB interface?
<archetech> its a nice tool w/e it does
<quantum_> SPI might be "Special Pension Investigations"?
<archetech> works with petitboot
<quantum_> I've seen petitboot, but is that invoked with the switch?
<quantum_> "Sheriff's Prison Investigators"?
<quantum_> "Snohomish (County) Personal Insinuations"?
<quantum_> Alright, you're pissed. Time for me to give up.

<quantum_> Is anyone running anything on an Odroid N2?
<c0rnelius> sure
<quantum_> c)c0rnelius: How did you get it running. And which image?
<quantum_> Trying to find 'Armbian' on Discord, stupidly only brings up 'Arabian' groups. Are ppl that disorganized?
<c0rnelius> I personally make my own, but I've booted img and didn't have any problems with it. The original N2 2GB model on the other hand has all kinds of issues though and only runs stable if I use vendor u-boot and kernel. Gets some kind of memory errors other wise.
<c0rnelius> I've booted Armbians img*
<c0rnelius> go to the forum: https://forum.armbian.com/
<ArmbianHelper> ^ Forums - Armbian Community Forums
<c0rnelius> on the right hand side it has a join discord link
<quantum_> I have an N2+ and no Armbian image boots. GUIs give the rotating circle forever, and CLIs fall out to (initramfs) for not finding the root's UUID, which is correct.
<c0rnelius> shit sdcard or bad eMMC maybe?
<quantum_> Replaced SD card. Not using eMMC but have tried the switch both ways.
<c0rnelius> i made this for someone a whiles back to test, you can try it and see if the same thing happens: https://github.com/pyavitz/binary/releases/download/images/meson64_odroidn2_plus-debian-bookworm-5.18.9-arm64-2022-07-05.img.xz
<ArmbianHelper> (REDIRECT) ^ [application/octet-stream] (353.0MiB)
<c0rnelius> if it doesn't work then its not an armbian issue.
<quantum_> Thx, I'll try it. I've also replaced the n2+; same symptoms.
<c0rnelius> its just a headless image. edit the contents of the boot dir or make sure you have a hdmi cable hooked up with keyboard.
<quantum_> I do. In boot.cmd is the device supposed to be mmcblk1p1?
<quantum_> I tried mmcblk0p1 and no change so that's not it.
<c0rnelius> i can't remember if I used mainline uboot or vendor uboot on that img. SO it either has one or two partitions? depending on what version of uboot I used.
<archetech> cant change boot.cmd and not rewrite it
<c0rnelius> my imgs either use extlinux or config.ini
<Armbian-Discord> <ManoftheSea> the device ought to be the UUID
<c0rnelius> so its editable
<quantum_> O won't edit yours c0rnelius.
<Armbian-Discord> <ManoftheSea> That way you can boot from SD, USB, or eMMC without modification
<Armbian-Discord> <ManoftheSea> or... hmm, I know the generic case, not the N2 case, so I'll go back to the sidelines.
<archetech> btw corn's image works it was for me
<quantum_> With CLI it drops to (initramfs) saying that it can't find the UUID. But checking the partition's UUID on laptop it is correct.
<archetech> already said I think he's doing incomplete dd burns
<quantum_> Using Etcher now, which verifies.
<archetech> so burn corns debian and make sure its done wring with top
<quantum_> Ok Etcher flashed and process gone. Trying...
<quantum_> "Create a user account. Name:" First time I've seen that.
<c0rnelius> well if it got that far, that means it booted.
cyph84 has quit [Ping timeout: 252 seconds]
<quantum_> Ty c0rnelius. Is Bookworm stable enough for production?
<quantum_> Igor said the hardware layer of Armbian is common to all images, so that is busted.
samythemany has joined #armbian
<quantum_> ... at least for N2.
<quantum_> Yep, got root.
<Armbian-Discord> <ManoftheSea> bookworm? Is debian 12 release?
<Armbian-Discord> <ManoftheSea> The statement about the hardware layer is that 5.10 for armbian's debian image is going to be the same as 5.10 for armbian's ubuntu jammy, ubuntu wet walrus releases. 5.17 will be different from 5.10, but the same as any other 5.17.
<Armbian-Discord> <ManoftheSea> Bookworm isn't released, so we'd only ever call it the "Armbian Sid image for N2", right?
<c0rnelius> quantum_: i mean its a devel build, so it could get shady.
<quantum_> Seems to be a step up from Unstable -- Testing.
<quantum_> I'd rather run Debian and don't mind CLI. Are there any other options?
<c0rnelius> menu-config
<quantum_> I mean for images?
<c0rnelius> yes. but I am not in the business of making imgs for people and discussing it in armbian is a no-no.
<quantum_> Ok. I could understand if Armbian's images worked though.
<c0rnelius> open an issue with armbian or post on the forum. maybe something is a miss in the latest builds?
cyph84 has joined #armbian
<Armbian-Discord> <ManoftheSea> you could download the builder and make your own modifications, no?
<Armbian-Discord> <ManoftheSea> Better still is that you get something working and contribute your fixes back, so everyone benefits.

<Manouchehri> so for the R4SE, how trivial is it to boot armbian off the internal storage?
TRS-80 has joined #armbian
<TRS-80> > To protect the security of your account, please set up Google Authenticator
<TRS-80> Please tell me this is a joke?
<Armbian-Discord> <ManoftheSea> No, you only need to set up a TOTP. Google Authenticator is one possible app that can ingest the seed to provide these codes.
<Manouchehri> TRS-80: TOTP is nice
<TRS-80> Aah, OK, yes KeePassXC supports TOTP. Why don't they just ask for that?
<archetech> to sucker you
<Armbian-Discord> <ManoftheSea> I use andOTP
<TRS-80> OK, so if you click on "cannot scan code" you can just get the seed. I still don't think we should be promoting proprietary software so prominently.
<Armbian-Discord> <ManoftheSea> If you know of the world of RFC 6238, you know "google authenticator" as a code to mean various forms of TOTP. If you don't, then Google Authenticator is enough information to get past the wall
<TRS-80> I know what TOTP is, but not 'Google Authenticator' and again why are we promoting them over any other option? Or even better, simply referring to it as TOTP?
<Manouchehri> TRS-80: Google Authenticator is probably the most well known TOTP app in the world.
<Armbian-Discord> <ManoftheSea> That's the name by which most people know it
<TRS-80> argumentum ad populum
<TRS-80> OK, I'm in.
<c0rnelius> what next? move away from github because it's owned my M$
<TRS-80> 3/10 bait
<TRS-80> :)
<TRS-80> c0rnelius: I think you damn well know my position on that, lol
<c0rnelius> hah :) yeap
<Manouchehri> TRS-80: TOTP isn't really specific enough either, so you would have to use RFC6238, and nobody aside from us IRC users like RFCs.
<Armbian-Discord> <ManoftheSea> I have my "google authenticator alternative" app.
<TRS-80> Sourcehut FTW
