<c0rnelius>
I'm a picky dick and just delete motd stuff I don't wanna see. It's like ubuntu and them forcing all this info on me I don't need to know about 99% of the time.
<c0rnelius>
My fav is you should restart your system. I think I'll do that on my own time. Thanx Ubuntu :)
<fizikz>
i guess ignorance is bliss. i'm picky too, in that i like things to be perfect..
<fizikz>
any way to make sure of which branch i'm actually on?
<Armbian-Discord>
<lanefu> Check the Armbian sources list
<Armbian-Discord>
<lanefu> And modify /etc/armbian-release
<Armbian-Discord>
<lanefu> Issue you are experiencing is more of a flaw in Deb packages armbian made / installed than anything else
<archetech>
theres a good reason ubu says reboot aft update
<archetech>
acting aloof is kinda goofy imo
<fizikz>
in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/armbian.list i see "deb http://apt.armbian.com buster main buster-utils buster-desktop". does "main" mean it's not on nightly?
<steev>
fizikz: the nightly packages have > version than stable, so when you convert to stable, it does not downgrade those packages
<fizikz>
can anyone confirm what the current latest kernel is on stable for xu4/hc2?
<steev>
you can either install them manually with apt and pass --allow-downgrade, or wait for stable to > nightly
<steev>
you can see it in /usr/lib/armbian-config/jobs.sh
<fizikz>
when i did an apt upgrade i got a kernel update to 5.4.151 today. if that is available for stable then i guess it should be ok. would be nice to have confirmation tho
<fizikz>
hopefully it's just armbian-release that isn't properly updated
<steev>
apt policy linux-image-whatever
<fizikz>
?
<fizikz>
oh and the header on armbian-config also says nightly
<fizikz>
so linux-image-current-odroidxu4 is installed with version 21.08.3 from http://apt.armbian.com buster/main armhf Packages
<steev>
there you go
<steev>
it's from stable
<c0rnelius>
archetech: I thought you ran Arch?
<steev>
he does, he just likes to complain in here
<fizikz>
interesting that linux-image-edge-odroidxu4 also shows http://apt.armbian.com buster/main armhf Packages
<steev>
edge doesn't always mean nightly
<archetech>
I do and ubu deb manjaro lfs
<c0rnelius>
Its a suggestion... Thats all it really is.
<fizikz>
ah ok
<archetech>
suggestion def = a subltel command
<c0rnelius>
Ok sir
<archetech>
subtle
<fizikz>
so maybe it's just armbian-release that wasn't updated when going back to stable
<c0rnelius>
I understand a kernel update which in the `duh `factor` but beyond that its just BS.
<archetech>
good example is glibc upgrade no reboot big trouble
<fizikz>
hopefully that will get fixed when the next release gets installed
<c0rnelius>
bs
<steev>
if the next release has a higher version number than the currently installed, it will
<fizikz>
good. then it's just a misleading printout for now
<steev>
that's just the way that debian package versions work
<fizikz>
and it also means that 5.4.150+ kernel came to stable, which is the really important bit since prior kernels had the memory performance issue
<fizikz>
can sleep better now :)
<c0rnelius>
archetech: I always figured you as common sense fella. I guess you prefer to listen to thy overlords?
<c0rnelius>
Which is fine now-a-days.
<archetech>
I build fr source I know stuff ;p
<archetech>
so no overloards but me here
<archetech>
I AM THE PACKAGER!
<archetech>
heh
<c0rnelius>
Even the king has those he consults
<archetech>
if he is wise yes
<c0rnelius>
Unless he/she is dumb? Which happens.
<c0rnelius>
cough `Trump` cough
<Armbian-Discord>
<lanefu> Noooooooooooo no dumpster 🔥
<c0rnelius>
I thought that fire was still going? My bad.
<archetech>
think ill get "triggered" by trump allusion ha
<c0rnelius>
Still happens. I've seen it first hand. Its like a ladies march for equal rights, but in reverse :)
<c0rnelius>
He went down harder than Theodore Roosevelt. I'm waiting for the new party fail. Which is gonna be awesome when it happens. Personally I think they should bring the Wigs back! That would interesting. But enough about politics.

kprasadvnsi: for what it's worth, if you have "aptitude" installed, you can run "aptitude why xterm" to get the dependency chain for why a package is installed
<c0rnelius>
I seriously doubt xterm is needed by anything.
<c0rnelius>
I've installed many a desktops and never seen xterm come up as a depends.
<c0rnelius>
plus just about all DE's come with a specific terminal now anyway.
<c0rnelius>
If someone really wanted too, they could also just echo in `NoDisplay=true` into the .desktop file. If for some reason it bothers them that much seeing it inside the menu.

<lanefu> you need xterm to launch xeyes
<Armbian-Discord>
<lanefu> but yeah i thikn it used to be part of xorg-common
<steev>
looks like it provides x-terminal-emulator, and that's the main reason it gets pulled in
