<Natris1979> Sweet. I extended my super lightweight launcher script to track and sort programs by frequency of use: https://github.com/thavelick/dotfiles/blob/main/river/launcher.sh
<Natris1979> still in (relatively) easy to grok shell script :)
<NickH> Why does the script use "riverctl spawn" and not "exec"?
<NickH> I never really understood what "riverctl spawn" is for.
<Natris1979> well, on a superficial level it's because that's what works
<Natris1979> but i think it works because riverctl spawn, per the man page runs the thing in a shell, which allows it allows it access to the path variable.
<Natris1979> however, if that was all it was, I'd expect exec "/usr/bin/zsh -c $program_to_launch"
<Natris1979> to work, but it doesn't

<ifreund> any users of `set-cursor-warp on-focus-change` feel free to weigh in here: https://github.com/riverwm/river/issues/983
Guest26 has joined #river
<LarstiQ> not logged in to gh atm. If you zoom and then move the mouse the focus jumps from zoomed to unzoomed because the cursor didn't warp
<LarstiQ> if you're warping the cursor I think it's reasonable to assume you'll use it, but maybe you want keyboard and mouse focus to be different?
<LarstiQ> but yeah technically the focus doesn't change
<LarstiQ> but why does it warp then on the second zoom?
<ifreund> LarstiQ: the focus does change there. If you have the top view in the stack focused and zoom it will focus the second view in the stack and put that on top
<LarstiQ> ah, because zoom is not just stack reodering but also focus, and in one case it had it and in the other it didn't
<LarstiQ> (not that I have skin in this game, I use `on-output-change` myself)
<ifreund> I don't use cursor warp or focus follows cursor at all (suprise suprise, the defaults are my config xD)
<ifreund> I'm currently trying to compile Waybar on chimera linux and it sucks so bad that I think I might just switch bars
<ifreund> I've always known it was an absolute mess of C++ inside but I've been able to ignore it thus far
<LarstiQ> what's the alternative?
<leon-p> no bar 🕶️
<leon-p> or, better said, I don't need a bar because I have river-tag-overlay, wayloadmon and wlclock
<leon-p> If I were to use one, it would probably be yambar though
<novakane> or come to the zig side of bars with zelbar :P

<adamcstephens> that sent me looking at wayland bars :)
<adamcstephens> yambar has river tag support
<adamcstephens> ironbar wins the not in c points, but doesn't support river tags yet
traidare has joined #river
<ifreund> heh, not in C but depends on gtk, otherwise know as a big pile of very messy C
<adamcstephens> right
<adamcstephens> i'm currently seeing what the yambar config is like
<adamcstephens> i use polybar when i log into X, so i'm wondering if this can replace both
<adamcstephens> though i'm finding river master to be quite stable so haven't gone to X in a while :)
<adamcstephens> and enough of that. i can maybe coax yambar to look how i want, but they have some issues with DPI scaling and i've already wasted enough time
<LarstiQ> so many problems with DPI scaling :(
<adamcstephens> yeah, it can be painful. it's much better than it used to be, and i do prefer the quality improvement of a higher resolution screen scaled.

<leon-p> my problem with most status bars is that they only support text with very basic decorations. If you want anything graphical you need to use icon fonts or unicode symbols or emoji, which just feels a bit unclean
<leon-p> If I were to write one now, I'd want to add nice graphical readouts for battery, resource usage, etc.

<The_Buhs> With rivertile is it possible for the main ratio/count to be based on the current tag? Or does that not make sense since you can have any combination of tags active at once?
Natris1979 has joined #river
<Natris1979> hey all, I'm currently using arch but will be moving to Debian soon. Does anyone here use Debian? How do you install river personally? Do you build from source? Do you use guix or some other package manager?
<leon-p> The_Buhs: rivertile does not allow to have different layout parameters per tag, however other layout generators do support that feature. check the github wiki for a list of generators
<The_Buhs> leon-p cool I'll take a look, thanks
