<geist>
was wondering what the rationale is for disabling shared support for the -elf target? I understand that it could be considered an embedded target, but seems that undoing this change works perfectly fine with a corresponding gcc-elf toolchain
<geist>
specifcally i'm building an embedded target and actually trying to use shared libs in a situation, but can't generate them easily without reverting this change

drewfustini: correct ... putting my patches on top of smaeul's tree is one of my test-cases :-)

Just wondering-type question, directed towards GPUs -- is there any idea/development/anything that would extend the riscv vector extension towards the GPU-style latency-hiding parallelism, with _many_ vector-capable "threads" available for execution by one cpu?
<[exa]>
(kinda like AMD GCN but you know, with riscv. ;] )

geist, no RISC-V shared library support in newlib, which means we get a lot of testsuite failures which makes us look bad, and makes it hard to find real bugs that need to be fixed

hmm
<geist>
but why would disabling shared at binutils help that? it heads it off at the pass so to speak by keeping test suites that use newlib from even attempting to try because of a missing libc.so?
<jimwilson>
binutils has many tests for shared library support, they all fail if we enable shared library support in binutils but don't have it in newlib

Hmm. It is interesting that AFAICT almost none of the other arches it tested (except micro blaze) have this limitation, but maybe they don’t tightly couple with new lib as much?
<geist>
(Ugh mobile keyboard keeps ‘fixing’ the spelling)
<geist>
Anyway, since there’s not anything fundamentally broken about enabling the support, I’ll just revert the change locally when building my toolchain. At least I understand the rationale now.
